George Hugins Obituary

George Burton Hugins, 93, died peacefully on January 5, 2014. He was born on December 20, 1920, to Nora and Charles Hugins, Sr., in Littleton, Colorado. There were four themes that characterized his life: family, education, ranching, and serving the community. In May 1944, George married Evelyn Louise Richmond. They had two sons, Jim Hugins (Denise) and Roger Hugins. Evelyn died in April 1987, and in March 1988, George married Elinor "Chris" Carter. She also preceded him in death in July 2013. George was blessed to have two special marriages with two wonderful women. George was a lifelong educator. After serving in the South Pacific with the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII, he received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Denver. In 1960, he received a Doctorate in Education from the University of Wyoming. He taught and was a principal in the public school in Morrison, CO, Leadville, CO and Gering, NE. After receiving his Doctorate he was Professor of Education and Director of Student Teaching at Adams State University in Alamosa, CO until his retirement in 1985. George grew up on a farm in Littleton and farming and ranching were in his blood. While living in Alamosa, he owned and operated a small ranch. When he and Chris moved to Fremont County in 1989, he immediately bought some property so he could have a "few" cows. George was happiest when he was on his horse with his dog "Lady" at his side, helping friends round up cattle in the hills. George liked people and made friends easily, whether it was by having coffee with friends or being involved in some community project. George and Chris were instrumental in helping start Habitat for Humanity in Fremont County. He was also involved in many other community projects. His positive outlook on life was an encouragement to all who came in contact with him. George will be missed by all who knew him. Mr. Hugins is survived by his son, Jim (Denise) Hugins; sister, Nellie Asmuth (John); brother, Charles Hugins Jr. (Phyllis); daughter-in-law, Wilma Carter; and step-son, Tom Carter (Donna). George's cup overflowed with grandsons, Jeremy Hugins, Kevin Hugins, John Carter, David Carter, and Christopher Carter; granddaughters, Abbey Flint, Jennifer Carter, Laurie Billington, and Katie Carter; and numerous great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his son, Roger. Funeral Service will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, January 10, 2014 at Holt Chapel of the Garden in Canon City, CO. Interment will be in Alamosa, CO. Arrangements are under the care of Holt Family Funeral Home. Online condolences @ www.holtfamilyfuneral homes.com

Grandpa George, every time I open my computer I see the photo of the family at the reunion in South Fork. I have spent a lot of time lately just looking at you and remembering. I love you more than a Hugins male knows how to express. I look forward to seeing you again.

Grampa George, I wish I would have known you longer. I never knew my own grandparents so knowing and loving you for the short time I did was a wonderful blessing. Thank you just for being you. Until we meet again, I love and miss you.

Jim, and family, I'm so sorry. We have many fond, joyous memories of George; from chasing cows with him on horseback, to Fourth of July BBQ's at his home in Penrose. I also have special memories from our days in Alamosa. He was a great friend, I know he will be missed greatly.
