Stuart L. "Stub" Freer, 72, of Canon City passed away on October 7, 2013. He was born November 12, 1940 to DePuy and Irma Freer in Cortland, NY. He graduated from McGraw High School in 1958 and Syracuse University in 1962 with a degree in Forestry. He began a career with the Bureau of Land Management in Coos Bay, OR, later moving around the country and retiring as an Associate District Manager in Canon City. He was involved with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Ducks Unlimited, and was a former member of the RE-1 School Board. He enjoyed collecting stamps and baseball cards as well as planning and taking trips with his family. Stub was a very giving person with a wonderful sense of humor and will be dearly missed by his family and many friends throughout the community. He married Barbara (Russell) Freer on June 16, 1962 who survives. He is also survived by his children, Shelley and Mike (Tracey), both of Canon City; sister, Judy (John) Green of Homer, NY; sisters-in-law, Shirley Ott of Tonawanda, NY and Vivan Snyder of Leesburg, FL; brother-in-law, Gene (Barb) Russell of Skaneatles, NY; step-mother, Virginia Bennett of Blodgett Mills, NY; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., on Friday, October 11, 2013, at the Holt Family Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 12, 2013 at the Shadow Hills Country Club at 1232 County Road 3 in Canon City, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations in Stub's memory can be made to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation or Ducks Unlimited. Checks must be made payable to RMEF or DU and sent in care of: Erik Brekke, 725 Piedra, Canon City, CO 81212. Arrangements are under the care of Holt Family Funeral Home. I've known Stub for a long time, while working for BLM. He was so knowledgeable about all personnel and fiscal matters - other Districts were not so fortunate. Since I retired I even appreciate his knowledge more - he was always so helpful in answering any and all questions. He had a great sense of humor, and he will be missed. Condolences to his family and prayers for strength.
