I actually had the chance to meet Mayor Rommel as a soldier, during his "Meet the Mayor" program for incoming soldiers to the Stuttgart area, I will forever be grateful for the historical knowledge he provided to me personally. R.I.P Sir.

Mayor Rommel was kind enough to host lunches and tours for newly arrived American soldiers and their families in Stuttgart. In the late 1980s, my wife and I attended one such event, and had the honor of his dining at our table. An honest-to-goodness friend to America and Americans. Our deepest condolences to his family and to the people of Stuttgart.

Condolences to the family for their loss. We were stationed in Stuttgart, Germany from 1977-1980 while Herr Rommel was Mayor. Also, General Patton, son of THE General Patton was my husband's Commander AND life long friends with Herr Rommel. We saw them together in a Memorial parade while stationed in Stuttgart. Also, General Patton would, without notice, drop in on my husband, (at that time, Cpt J. Smith), to see how things were going. Our prayers for peace and comfort to the Rommel family are being sent. Also, we were friends with Herr Rommel's nephew here in Sacramento, CA who worked at the very Sacramento Depot that General Rommel's soldiers were POWs. General Rommel told his soldiers to be gentlemen and respect their captors. The story from the employees who worked at the Sacramento Army Depot (formerly known as the Sacramento Signal Depot) would tell you that General Rommel's soldiers were very respectful. Some of those POWs later came back to visit their captors. Speaks a lot to General Rommel. Rest in peace, Herr Rommel. Col (rUSA) Jack and Christine Smith
