Donna Boardman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 1, 2008.

SANDWICH — Donna Marie Boardman, 61, building commissioner for the town of Sandwich, died on Friday, Nov. 28, 2008, at the McCarthy Care Center, after a courageous struggle with cancer.

She was born on Jan. 30, 1947, to the parents of Charles and Hazel (Jeffery) Flood of Norwood. She was educated in the Norwood public schools and graduated from Norwood High School in 1964. She went on to Chandler Junior College where she graduated in 1966. Later in life, she attended classes at Cape Cod Community College and the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.

Through the years Donna held various jobs, but by the early 1980s she was finally on the path to her dream job. Donna received her real estate license and her construction supervisor's license. She first worked for the Plymouth Area Construction as an office and project manager. In 1998, Donna was hired as the assistant building inspector for the town of Sandwich and became the building commissioner in 2002 until her passing. For the last eight years, she taught a construction supervisor course for CCI.

Donna was a member of the South Eastern Massachusetts Builder's Association and was on the board of directors of the Massachusetts Federation of Building Officials.

Donna's hobbies included gardening, cooking, reading, and spending time with her family. She enjoyed traveling to a variety of locations, but her favorite locations were Europe and a beach cottage in Wellfleet. Donna found pleasure helping her son, David, with construction projects and working with her other son, Robert, on his clam business.

Donna is survived by two sons, Robert Boardman of Chincoteague, Va., and David Boardman of East Sandwich; parents Charles and Hazel Flood of East Sandwich; a brother, Charles Flood of New Hampshire; a sister, Darlene Flood of East Sandwich; and three grandchildren, Amy, Mary and Kinsey.

Funeral services for Donna Boardman will be at the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home in Sandwich. Viewing hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 2. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 3. Burial will follow at Sandwich Town Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hopes Program at Massachusetts General Hospital, Yawkey Center, Infusion Center, 8th Floor, Boston, MA 02114, or Breast Cancer Research, c/o Dr. Gerald Younger, Yawkey Center, Suite 9E, Boston, MA 02114.

I would like to express my sincere condolences on the recent passing of a good friend, Donna. Althought I didn't know her for that long, the many occasions I spent time in her company, I did come to realize her great kindness and compassion towards others. And I do know that she was very highly respected trough her community and profession.
To Robert and David, you were truly fortunate to have such a woman as a model in life.

To her family:

Donna was a dedicated professional whom I admired, particularly for the fact of her rise to a pre-eminent position in a traditionally male-dominated industry. I am very saddened to hear of her passing, and extend my condolences to her family for your loss. Hopefully, you can draw some comfort knowing that her pain and suffering is at an end. I will remember her fondly.

Donna was a woman in a job position that she truly loved. There are very few women that hold inspector's positions in the Comm. I was proud and priviledged to know Donna and to share with her the many stories of being a female inspector. I will miss her smile. My deep condolence to her family on the loss of a wonderful person, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter and friend.
