On October 17, 2013, Joel returned to the cosmos from whence he came. He lived a life of intelligence, curiosity, adventure, passion and dreams. His professional life as a business owner was defined by his honesty, stellar ethics and generosity. He was an excellent pilot, sailor, traveler and friend extraordinaire. His sense of humor was legend. He delighted in the opera, T. S. Eliot and Tom Lehrer.
The three things that always brought a smile to his face were Barbara, Beethoven and bacon. Beginning his life in Minneapolis, he completed it in his tranquil home in La Jolla, California. His wife of 37 years, Barbara, feels it her good fortune and an honor to have been such a big part of that life and to share loving bonds with this unique man.
In addition to Barbara, he held his children, Lynn (Jay) Stein and Deborah (Lon Riesberg) Fryer; and his adored granddaughters, Miriam and Rebekah Stein; as invaluable treasures in his life. He loved being a husband, father and grandfather.
Joel will be memorialized on October 23, 2013, at 11:30 a.m. at Southwestern Yacht Club, 2702 Qualtrough Street, San Diego, CA 92106.
Donations in Joel's honor may be sent to the San Diego Symphony or Reuben H. Fleet Science Center.

Barbara,
Joel was one of the best people I had the privilege to know during my time in California. He encouraged me to quit smoking in 1990 and until this day I am smoke free. I was invited onto his sailboat for day of sailing, opera and some of your best home made chili. He invited me onto his twin engine plane to fly to lunch! I am deeply saddened to learn of his passing in 2013. He was my boss, mentor and friend in the early 90s. I moved to Florida in 1995, but I will never forget his generosity, incredible wit, and gracious demeanor.

Today I saw SCORE sticker on a car, I remembered Joel who first had introduce me the idea when I was a banker in La Jolla several years ago. First I dropped an email and, for some odd reason, I googled his name and saw the obituary. I am sorry, so sorry..He was a great gentleman with great sense of humor. My condolences.

I miss my dad. I miss his sense of humor and his intelligence, his friendship and support. Thanks to all of you who commented here for remembering him and for being a part of his life. He did not live long, but he lived large and he lived fully. He was so loved and admired by so many.

Joel always reminded me of Omar Sharif, the actor. Joel has given me sound advice in years past. He was a caring brother in law, can actually say my best brother in law! I will remember Joel with a smile.

Barbra and Family,
I've had the pleasure to know and work with Joel in both Minnesota and San Diego. When asked to describe Joel to a colleague, what came to mind was; “He was a class act”.
You have my deepest sympathy.
