I was a Sigma Nu a year behind "Flint" in school. He and Kent Kirby and myself had a number of "adventures" including hunting rattlesnakes up on the mountain ridge back in the Summer of '66. Great times and great memories. So sorry for the loss to your family. Best wishes.

I deeply regret your loss. Vance and I were friends when
I attended grad school at Penn State. I was an active member of the Spring Creek Chapter and we shared some fishing time together.

Found this photo of Vance taken at the Allenberry Resort in Carlisle, October 2009.
Vance, Joe Humphreys, Mark Belden, and posthumously, George Harvey, were being honored by the Fly Fishing Museum, for their work with PSU students, teaching hundreds of young people the skills and the art of fly fishing.

Dear Ruth,

I am so incredibly saddened by Vance's passing. He will always hold a special place for me. So many fun times with him, Rich, Ivan and the crews that showed up on my door step over the years.
I am so glad that I got to see the both of you just a month ago.
With Love and sympathy

For some reason I thought today of the incredible Orienteering class I took in summer 1980. I do not remember the names of any college instructors outside of my major but I remembered Vance and googled him only to sadly find his obituary. He had an impact. My condolences.

I am so sorry for your loss. I meet Vance last spring at Clearwater program. He was such a gentleman with his time and expertise. He spent time fishing and teaching and sent me his patterns for the school kids I work with. I was a better person for spending time with him.

Dear Ruth and family..I was so shocked and saddened to hear of your husband's passing. While I didn't know him personally, the wonderful words and tributes speak volumes about the impact he had on the community and on individual's lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family at this very sad time..take care. Amy and Kevin Leddy

Ruth, I'm very sorry for your loss. Vance was an enormous help to me personally during my time running different hockey programs in the early 80s. To me, he was always the right mixture of motivation and yet had a sense of calm. He certainly had a greater influence on me than any of my academic professors. Our prayers are with you and your family. Matt Glass ‘83

Ruth, we only knew you two for ten years or so which makes the footsteps of his influence and impact all the greater. He cast a line to all and reeled in morality and integrity. He made simplicity a noble endeavor. We will miss him.

From the McKinstry family to the McCullough family, our sincere condolences. Vance, along with Ruth, always opened their house and their hospitality when we would visit during the glory years of PSU football.
We shall miss him greatly . . . God rest his soul in heaven.

Dear Ruth,
My condolences to you and the family. It was a pleasure to work with Vance over so many years. He was the most ardent supporter of Penn State Ice Hockey, but he was also the strongest, outspoken advocate for all Penn State students. He will be missed by all whose lives he touched.

Dear Ruth,

I'm so sorry for your loss. Vance leaves behind a wonderful legacy of community service. He helped many young people...including myself. His support of Penn State hockey has been invaluable. As a "founding father," he is in large part responsible for the success the program is enjoying today. More importantly, he helped build and foster the Penn State Hockey family. For this, I'm eternally grateful.

Geoff Martha
Penn State Hockey player from '89-'92

I am so thankful to Vance for being such a wonderful friend to my husband and for the close relationships my family has developed with the McCullough family as a result of that friendship. Vance touched each member of our family, and his legacy will continue on the streams and lakes her in Northeastern PA because of the love and knowledge of fishing that he passed on to my husband who passed it on to our son and his friends. With heavy hearts and our deepest condolences to the McCullough family –Trisha, Gary, Katie & Gary Higgins

I was so surprised by the news of Vance's passing. I remember my many conversations with him in the time I helped coach the Icers (1979 – 1984). While I will not be able to make it out to Penn State for the visitation and the funeral please know that I am praying for his family in this time of sorrow. I was glad I got to see him when I was out to Penn State for the announcement of the new arena. Vance was a great man and his efforts for the Icers will never be forgotten.
August 22, 2013
The legacy created by Vance will live on forever in all the arenas he's touched. Specifically speaking, I know his spirit will always remain in the Penn State Hockey program. I know he'll continue watching over the program with that same warm personality and bright smile that he always had. I can still see him beaming with pride over the accomplishments of the student-atheletes. I still see his warm reception of the parents, the coaches, the support staff, the fans, etc. You'll always be with us, Vance. WE ARE PENN STATE!!!

As a PSU Icer Alumni in the late 70's and early 80's, I know we would have been able to accomplish what was accomplished. Then and through to today. I didn't get very involved in the club management in those day's, having trouble making the 3rd line and putting myself through school. What I do know, is that he was always there, and we all knew that he was pulling hard for all of us. Different than the coaches, more of the "Patriarch" and father figure. A long over due thanks you to Vance, and condolences to his loved ones from me and my family.

Two of the most memorable people from my time at PSU and with the Icers are Vance and Ruth. There are no words that can fully describe the positive impact they have provided on me and the Icer family.

The Spring Creek Chapter of Trout Unlimited owes it's beginning to Vance and the five other men who started our chapter. The man was a champion of coldwater conservation. We hope he can hear us when we say that our chapter will carry on the conservation work that he so dearly believed in. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

To my McCullough Family, my memories of our holiday family gatherings, drinks to the New Year, or any occasion put a smile on my face. Vance lived his life to the fullest and touched so many. I will always be grateful how he supported my father, mother, and brother Walter. I will miss you Vance, forever in my heart, Monica

From the Garth Brooks song, The Dance." I could have missed the pain, but I"d of had to miss the dance".This was a dance that lasted 40 years, and covered thousands of miles.A dance to the music of fly rods, turkey calls, and the locator bells on English Setters. From Penns Creek, to the grouse coverts of NW Pa, to the Missouri turkey roosts, to the Bighorn River,to your favorite place, the Madison. It was a great dance, and now it is great pain. Thank you Vance for taking me under your wing. Lou
