Henry Haranin Obituary

Henry Ivicic Haranin July 24, 1943 February 1, 2014 Henry "Hank" Haranin, loving son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather passed away on Saturday. He was born July 24, 1943 in Bellefonte, the son of Anne E. and the late Henry A. Haranin. In 1977, Hank married Judy Spotts Haranin, who survives him at home. In addition to his wife, Hank is survived by many who love him, including his mother, children, grandchildren, sister, and their families: son, Mr. Henry Scott Haranin (Bellefonte) and his wife Jane, daughter, Mrs. Frances Ivicic Haranin Trana (Ithaca, N.Y.) and her husband Justin, and daughter, Dr. Emily Christina Haranin (Los Angeles, Calif.). He is also survived by his sister, Constance Haranin Davis, her husband Robert Davis, and their children Robert, Todd and Anne. Additionally, he is survived by a special cousin who was like a brother, Robert "Gilbert" Ivicic. Of all of his family, Hank's greatest loves were his grandchildren Athena Haranin, and Miles, Eli and William Trana. Hank was a 1961 graduate of Bellefonte High School where he was a member of the wrestling team and played JV and Varsity football. He began working with his father at Haranin Construction Company during high school. Hank then attended Saint Francis College in Loretta. Hank's participation in collegiate activities included membership in the Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity, Economics club, and participation in the IFC sports program attaining "All Star" honors in football. One of his proudest accomplishments was his college wrestling career; he was named "School Athlete" in the 1964-65 school year and was team captain in 1965. He was also elected into "Who's Who in Colleges and Universities." He graduated in 1965 with a BA in history. During college, he studied abroad with Loyola University's very first study abroad program, spending a year in Rome. He traveled extensively throughout Europe, which was one of his fondest memories and the source of many stories. He created lifelong friends across the United States and internationally during that time. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corp in 1965 where he continued his successful wrestling career. He reported to Quantico, Va. and then served one year in Vietnam at Cameron Bay and Da Nang. One of the honorable duties that he performed was to accompany the bodies of soldiers' home to their families who sacrificed their lives for their country. He retired from the marines with a rank of Captain. Since returning to Bellefonte, Hank has always been a signature figure in the family construction business. As an avid supporter of Bellefonte High School sports programs, Hank loved to keep up with local student athletes. In recent years, Hank could most often be found on the golf course with Judy and his close friends, having breakfast with the 'Coffee Club', or spending time with his grandchildren. In September, Hank and Judy had the pleasure of traveling throughout Italy with some of their closest friends and visiting Hank's family in Croatia. Many wonderful memories were made spending time exploring small villages and driving through the countryside; Hank enjoyed these times the most. Those who knew Hank best will miss his gift for making friends and connecting with people everywhere. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 6, 2014, from 4-7 p.m., at Wetzler Funeral Service, Inc., 206 N Spring Street, Bellefonte, with a Vigil for the Deceased at 6:45 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held Friday February 7, 2014, at 10 a.m., at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 134 E. Bishop, Bellefonte, PA 16823, with Father George Jakopac officiating. Burial with military honors will be private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Haranin Family Bellefonte Education Fund, in memory of Henry I. Haranin, PO Box 97, Bellefonte, PA 16823. Not sure what to say?

Dear Judy, Family and Friends,
To know Hank was a treat. He put you at ease; he made you laugh. And, although he made you enjoy the moment, there was a serious side to Hank as in the evening spent with Joanne and me when we ran into him in a city of 5 million people - just serendipity! This typifies Henry.

God Bless his family and friends - he will be missed.
