I was listening to Depeche Mode and all I could think of was you yelling at Alex and me cuz we could not get the intro to "Just Can't Get Enough" right. After about 80 attempts, we got it. Another long winter swirled past, and we are on the edge of fire season again. We're back at it in John Day, Oregon, your picture still on the wall so you can keep tabs on the new guys. This year will be the third annual running of the "Ken's Ten" memorial 10k race, once again taking place at the Lake Creek Campground. We'll all have you in mind for the race, and each time we get into the woods in pursuit of another wildfire.
Something else I wanted to add: The year after you left us I was on a fire in Oregon, the first shift was a bummer and I wasn't looking forward to the next. On the second day, however, I pulled a shovel out of the fire box and there was your name on it. You had sharpened and initialed it the summer before, a year past to the day, July 11. That put a smile on my face and the rest of the assignment was a piece of cake. I still have the tag from that shovel. It says "K.F. 7/11" I know you'll be looking out for us again- see you in the woods.

I am reflecting on all that you have shown and taught me about music, and I want you to know that you were an immeasurable inspiration to me. I remember like it was yesterday you saying in the car on our way to Augusta, GA "you gotta hear this guy!" It was Congar Ol' Ondar from Tuva and he was throat singing three pitches at once! From that day forward that music sparked a lifetime of research and curiosity with me, my eyes are still wide open to the world of music. Now almost 8 years as a music educator, i gratefully share this music with as many students as possible, and they are all blown away by it. I have you to thank for so many things and good times. Happy birthday Kenny. I recently moved walking distance from Fahnestock State Park where you lead the way up the trail to the top of the mountain where we camped out in the lean to. Now I hike some of the same trails with my family and the dog. I have you to thank for opening my eyes to what nature has to offer. Every time I'm in those woods I think about you. Dear Kenny,
It's hard to believe that a year has passed by so quickly. I think about you alot and hope your family have found some sort of peace. My wife and I had a baby girl in December called Caitlin Ann. It's a shame we never kept in touch over the years but it would have been nice to have a chat about fatherhood. You on the phone with a beer in America and me with a beer in Germany. Anyway, I just want you to know there is a beer in my hand at this moment and I'm thinking of you (better late than never).
