C. Walter Byrd CHARLOTTE - Mr. Byrd of Charlotte passed away Tuesday, November 27, 2012, at the Carriage Club Assisted Living Facility in Charlotte, NC. Walter was born February 29, 1920 to the late Walter Pierce and Zula Tomlinson Byrd. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Evelyn and Lois Byrd, who were long time residents of Lillington, NC. He graduated from Wake Forest University in 1941 and upon graduation he enlisted in the US Army Air Corps and served out of Guadalcanal in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Major, having won the Air Force Distinguish Flying Cross for Bravery. Walter is survived by his three children, Jean Allison and husband, Al, Tom Byrd and wife, Maria and Andy Byrd and wife, Reet; six grandchildren, Amanda Byrd Chambers and husband, Matt, Ashley Byrd, Dana Byrd, Aleks Byrd, Lauren Allison Deese and husband, Jeremy and Adam Allison and wife, Natalie; two great grandchildren, Haley and Porter Allison. A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Friday, November 30, 2012 at Providence United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 1420 E. Seventh St., Charlotte, NC 28204 or The Wesley Men's Fellowship Class, c/o Providence United Methodist Church, 2810 Providence Rd., Charlotte, NC 28211. Walter once explained that Burtonwood was named for a location in Great Britain suggested by his developer partner. We all agreed with your choice as the best place to live! Thank you for Burtonwood, Walter!
