I pray God takes your family and wraps you in his loving arms during this sad time. I just lost my father Thursday, he was a Vietam Veteran. Those not directly involved in the life of a Soldier can not comprhend the sacrifices they and their familys make. They do not understand not only the pride we have for them but the challenges they face serving and returning home. God Bless this family and all other Military families.

Today is my day to honor one of the heros who has given his life in the name of safetly, patriotism and freedom - I have chosen to honor Lance Cpl Nicholas Obrien today. To the O’Brien Family & Friends: I read the article in USA Today that mentioned Nic. My heart breaks for everyone that is grieving the loss of this courageous young man. I am a sister of a young Reconnaissance Marine who is currently serving in Afghanistan. There are no amount of words or gestures that can take away your pain. As time passes find comfort in how brave and selfless Nic was to go overseas and leave his loved ones and the comforts of home behind, to defend our freedom. May all the wonderful times and memories through the years you spent with Nic, give you comfort. Nic is an astounding, courageous, admirable young man that gave his life for his country that he loved. May his memory live on forever…Sempre Fidelis

I've mourned your son every single day since I heard. I stood on the church lawn to honor him and pray for you all. He reminds me SO much of my own 13 y/o son who is hellbent on joining the USAF. Because of Nic and your family's sacrifice I cherish every second I have with him just as I'm sure you're cherishing 21 years of glorious memories that can never be taken away. To honor Nic, my son and I are adopting deployed servicemen overseas through herobox.org and sending monthly care packages. Nic's made me want to be a better person, for my life to mean just a fraction of what his did. Both my kids go to the gym across the street from Assembly of God and I run their parking lot during their practices. Every time I do that now I stop at that beautiful fountain and say a prayer for Nic and your family. God bless you all and your guardian angel Marine.

Saturday, June 11th as we were sitting with someone I love very dearly in the NSO at the airport to see him off for his first deployment, he also going to Afghanistan, we learned of this soldier's death. That was kind of hard for us as we were sending our loved one off. I can't imagine the hurt this family is suffering with. I will pray for the family and the friends of this young man, who was truly a hero. I never really thought about those serving our country until about 4 years ago when I met someone in the service. I have learned so much and have such an appreciation for everyone who has served or who is serving in our military. Thank you to this young man for giving his life so we can experience freedom.

June 20, 2011
Well done thy good and faithful servant. You and the others before you fought the good fight. You gave all.
Now go and get your just reward in eternal paradise.
June 20, 2011
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Know that our prayers and thoughts are with you in this most trying time, and do not hesitate for a moment - trust that the Lord and his "Brothers & Sisters" in arms that were there to receive him in HIS Kingdom, will never again let him be in harm's way; watching over him as he watched over us in his most selfless sacrifice. God will grant you the peace in your heart that you deserve in this time of grief in due time, until then know that we all mourn your loss and send an outpouring of love and strength to the entire family.

So sorry to hear about Nic. We will be praying for your family. May it comfort you to know that your son will be remembered as a HERO who was unselfish and brave, living a military life of respect and love for his country.
June 20, 2011
To the O'Brien Family,
My first memories of Nic are from watching him play soccer as a 6 or 7 year old on a league in Coulwood. Every time I think of Nic, I remember how I loved to watch him play. He was the star of the team and even at that very young age, he impressed me with his drive to give the game all he had. I have kept up with him thru more recent years through my daughter and Hayley and have been equally impressed with his courageous ambition when he joined the Marines. Nic is truly an inspiration. It would seem that he lived more in his short life than some could live in 90. My heart has been broken for you all since we got the truly shocking news of his death on that Thursday night. My prayer for you all is that the God who gave him to you and now has taken him Home, will strengthen you and hold you in His loving care, close to His heart, until you see your precious Nic again. Proverbs 10:7 says; "The memory of the righteous is blessed..." Nic's life was a blessing and an inspiration. His memory will forever be blessed. May God's comfort and peace be with you all.--Kim Wyatt

June 20, 2011
Richard and Tammy, I have known you both and your family too, being a great friend for most of your life, as children and neighbors.

I am so very proud of the parents you were to Nic, to raise such a fine young man that gave up a dream for a college scholarship to play baseball and to choose to serve our Country, to protect our Freedom. Nic is and earned the title American Hero. This is a legacy to you as parents. God be with you today and always. The love of Nic and the bond that has formed with many from his Patriotic Act. History has just begun again. Love to the O'Brien Family, Always, Judie
June 20, 2011
Dear Mr. and Mrs. O'Brien,
What an incredible and courageous young man you raised! So unusual in these days, of turbulent times. Where most young men his age are thinking about only themselves, he was thinking about how you would continue on with your lives, without him. I know your hearts are broken, but try to always honor your son's wishes and live full and happy lives. It sounds like he wouldn't want you to waste a single day on grief, but instead honor him by living your lives to the fullest and seek pleasure out of knowing that you raised a real American hero.
I pray that you will have peace and that Nicholas is now in the arms of Jesus.
June 20, 2011

Dear O'Brien Family,

For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

For those missing in action;
for those who didn’t make it home.
I know you’re in God’s presence you are not alone.
For every neatly folded flag;
for every shattered family
I will do the only thing I know to dignify your memory.

I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.

I salute you .

I Salute You.

Dear Richard, Tammy and Haley:

I just finished reading all of the comments and there is so very little to add. What a beautiful tribute to Nic and to your family. I catch my self thinking about when we grew up and our fathers and mothers. We could never have imagined what the future had in store.
Jordan had a quote I found on his mirror days after he died. "What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us. Anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift" Truly, Nic was the ultimate Soldier, Son, Brother and Friend. He gave his best for all of us and I am truly grateful and yet so undeserving.
June 16, 2011
I don't really know what to so say to you. Your son was a hero. Each day I see hundreds of young men and women like Nic from Camp Lejeune and Cherry point. They all volunteered to do something others won't do. Your son was a hero to me that he was willing to fight for our freedom

The last paragraph of the poem The Final Inspection

"Step forward now, you soldier,
You've borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell."

Members of Trindle Spring Lutheran Church in Mechanicsburg, PA would like to honor your son’s sacrifice and memory by sending our prayers and comfort through a shawl which we will mail to you. If you are interested, please contact me at gramman@comcast.net with the names and addresses and what they would like to receive. We will send them as soon as possible. Also, if you know of any other families who are grieving the loss of a loved one who died serving our country, please pass along my e-mail address, as our organization can no longer get family contacts through the military. Tammy, Richard, and Haley...

I have labored over what I might try to say to you and know in my heart that nothing can possibly ease the pain you are feeling now. I, as well as many others, have surely been struck by a silence, wanting to reach out to you and yet being at a loss in hopes not to say the wrong things. I know that despite all the wonderful outpouring of love and affection, you are suffering a quiet sadness of your own and that you must be longing for just one more day, one more word, or one more touch. And while we cannot understand why Nic had to leave us here so soon before we were ready to say goodbye, I pray for you every day that you can come to know some peace and somehow be comforted by the love that is pouring out for you now, in his honor. My greatest hope for you is that little by little you can begin to remember not only that Nic died...but that he "LIVED". Honorably and Fearlessly.....he lived his life to the fullest and without regret. Because of that, he left us memories too beautiful to ever forget. I hope that you know that I am here for you...for any need. No request is too large or small. I love you each and every one. As Richard best said it.....Nic was a Warrior and a Hero and I am so proud to have called him family. My salute to you for raising such a "Man of Honor".

And Nic...my salute to you for giving me and my boy another day of celebrating the freedoms that you laid down your life for. I am humbled by your courage and bravery. God Bless You.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to L/Cpl . Nicholas S. O’brien our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Nicholas. And to Nicholas it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while opposing enemy forces in Afghanistan. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Nicholas, you are a brave Marine Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,307 Legionnaire Veterans of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Nicholas’s family and loved ones. Semper Fi !

Words cannot express how truly sorry I am for the loss of such a fine young man! Nick was a joy to all who knew him. He always had a positive attitude no matter what; if he was dealt lemons you could truly depend on Nick to make lemonade. As a matter of fact, I believe that is where that phrase derived from! I remember the last time a saw Nick at the Baseball Field before he deployed. He had that beautiful smile that would brighten anyone's day. He asked about the family and told me to take care and try not to worry about Richie... I will never forget that conversation! Always thinking of others. RIP Hero Nicholas O'Brien!

To his mom Tammy, his dad Richard and his sister Haley - May God give you strength to prevail and to help you through this most difficult time. As you know, this really hit home for me because Richie is also a Marine. You are in my thoughts and prayers and may God give you comfort and understanding. I cannot even begin to understand why this happened and am praying for my own understanding as well. I am SOOOOO proud of our Hero! Know that we are here for you if you need anything. Hugs and prayers for you!

Words can not express the sorrow we feel for your family at this time. What a very brave young man your son was to choose to serve others before himself. A True American Hero. May the Lord's Peace suround you at this time and always. The Manchester Family, Huntersville NC

Dear Tammy, Richard, and Haley,
Willie and I were shocked to hear about Nicholas. Our hearts are so sad, yet he sounds like such an admirable young man who knew God's plan for his life. We are humbled by his willingness to serve in such a great way and the courage it took to know where he was headed and boldly go. All the "thank yous" for his service will not stop the heartache, but our hope is that they become a balm that eases the tragic loss you feel. God has blessed the service of His fallen hero. May we never forget Nic's service to our country. We love you and will keep you in our prayers in the coming days.

Richard and Tammy, we also mourn with you in the death of Nic, for our son, LCpl. David B. Houck, was killed in the Battle for Fallujah, 26 Nov 2004, one of 13 in 1/8, Bravo Co. David's body was laid to rest in section 60 of Arlington National Cemetery. Arlington has become our family's burial place as my dad (USAF) and mom are buried in section 6. We don't live that far away....in western Rowan County, about 40 min. NW of Charlotte. We want to support you as you trudge through day by day. Please call (704) 636-2042 or email etcsbob@att.net. My hubby is a retired Navy senior chief and we will put flowers on Nic's grave each time we visit Arlington. Thank you for raising such a fine son who willingly joined the USMC to defend and protect our freedoms. May our Lord comfort you. Bob & Beth Houck

My heart goes out to you. I had a son in the army and he was in Saudi during Dessert Storm. Thank God he made it home but latter he was killed in the trucking accident on I-40 that took out the bridge. So I know the pain and the pride also of having a wonderful son. My God bless you in your time of sorrow. You have a son to be proud of.
Sincerely

Dear O'Brien family, your son sounded like a great all American young man. We are grateful for his service, proud of him and sympathize with you. Our son, Capt. Seth Mitchell, USMC was KIA in Afghanistan on 10/26/2009. He, like your Nic was a role model for other young adults. God rest their souls and may we always honor and remember thier service.

I cannot think of any words of comfort that will take away your pain at this time. Nic sounds like the kind of young man any parent would be proud of in all walks of life. We thank Nic and your family...Nic for his bravery and dedication to maintaining our rights and freedom...his family for raising such a fine young man instilled with determination and kindness toward all in need. Knowing that he lived his life according to God's plan is a tribute to both Nic and you, his family. It is an honor and a privilege to have the opportunity to learn what a fine upstanding young man you shared with the world. And for that I do thank you.

Dear Tammy, Richard and Haley:
Words can not express the hurt and loss I feel today. Nic was a wonderful kid. So full of life. One thing just sticks out in my mind like it was yesterday: Nic riding his 4-wheeler in the backyard over in West Chester, just a tot, but going wide open, fearless. Nic has taken that same fearlessness from just a tot to the GREAT MAN he is today. What a remarkable Angel he will be in Heaven. I can see him now. Picking and preparing his ball team for Jesus. What a Great Star, his light will be shining down on you guys for long time to come. Keep the faith and Trust in God he is with you today, tomorrow and always. I love you more than you will ever know. My prayers and thoughts will be with you as you take this long journey. I stand with you and will be here for you at any time of the day, night or whenever you need me. " "Thank you Nic for allowing me the opportunity to know you and thanks for the freedom that you so proudly sought for us each and every day. You will always remain in my heart forever. I am so Very PROUD. What a HERO you are. Love Pixie

Nic you did so much for our country, everyone is so proud of you. We will miss you dearly. RIP soldier.

AS a retired Army officer I hate to hear of even one death of our young and fearless soldiers. Most of our population has no idea what men like Nic means to our freedoms. May this soldier be honored in heaven for all he did. Such a brave young man. All of us are very proud of him
June 11, 2011
Dear Richard and Tammy, our love and continued prayers will be with your family. May God give you the strength to be as brave as Nic.

I remember his grandmother, Sylvia talking my ears off about Nic. He was such a ray of sunshine to her. As soon as possible, I need to give each of you a hug for her and myself.

While we understand that no words can provide complete comfort in a time of such great loss, please know that the people of this country are grateful to you for Nic's sacrifice. We owe you a debt that cannot be repaid. Again, thank you.

From what I understand, this young man was offered a full academic scholarship but instead decided to join the Marines and fight for his country. I wish I could have gotten the chance to meet Nicholas; it sounds like he was a great young man who loved his country, his friends and his family. May God embrace his family and friends and give them the courage and strength to go on without him. He will forever be in your hearts. He has reached his final deployment, which is with our Father above. Good job Nicholas and “Thank You” for protecting the freedoms that we, as American’s, enjoy.

Our tears and prayers are with the family during this most difficult time.

May you find peace in the fact that Nic has defeated his last enemy, death and has reached his final duty station in heaven.

May those that knew Nic be compelled to walk in his cadence.

He will forever be honored for his courage and commitment to our freedoms.
