Maurice and where the wild things are has changed me forever. Emotionally, mentally and physically. I couldn't have grown up without it. I owe you with everything that i am and who I am today for your work.
May 21, 2012
It had been my deepest wish to meet you, sir... As an artist, we find other artists who become like parents to us... We revisit their works daily, looking for teachings, guidance, inspiration... You were mine, Mr. Sendak. And though we've never even met, I feel like I've lost a father. Good night. Sleep tight. Thank you, and, I love you.
May 14, 2012
Thank you as a Teacher you inspired my children. With Where The Wild Things Are. With grand words Their faces lit up to hear the story being read to them..
Thank you..
May 14, 2012
The heavens are alive with Mr. Sendak's boisterous spirit and creative energy while we here on earth are saddened by his leaving us.
May 14, 2012
I cried when I heard the news of Sendak's passing. I mourn as I write this. I will be forever indebted to him for his book, "In the Night Kitchen" because after reading it to my four-year-old son, he has expressed acceptance, even pride, of his male body which he did not, which he disliked, before. Truly, so grateful.
May 13, 2012
Thank you for illustrations for "Little Bear". My son was so enamoured with him. God Bless.
May 12, 2012
I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Sendak and telling him how reading Where the Wild Things Are as a child led to my love of reading.
As soon as I found out I was having a baby.. I went out and bought that book!
So sorry for your loss.
May 12, 2012
A great loss to the world if books and libraries!
May 12, 2012
Where the Wild Things Are is one of the best books I read as a child. Maurice Sendak was a truly wonderful author and he will be missed. My heart goes to his family and friends. May they find a measure of comfort in knowing God is near those broken at heart and those crushed in the spirit he saves.
May 11, 2012
Sendak was a magical writer and a good friend. He will be missed by children of all ages. He was a mentor to all those who loved his works and were inspired to write like him. My life was made better for having known this wonderful man!
May 11, 2012
Feels like a hole has been left here on planet earth. Gregory Macguire's description of his last day with Sendak is extraordinary. My husband and I share many things, not the least is that Sendak's Nutshell Library (Pierre said, "I don't care!") was a huge part of our childhoods.
May 11, 2012
Mr. Sendak will truly be missed by all.May God give comfort to the Family.2 Corinthans 1:3-4.
May 11, 2012
You have been a part of our family since our son was born - and he is now 37 years old. He now has two sons who love your books and who, I know, will pass your stories onto their children. Thank you for being part of our family and please know you will forever remain in our hearts. God bless you and may you rest in peace.

To the Sendak family, may your memories help you through this difficult time and know that you have the love and support of the millions of us who loved him.

With our deepest sympathy,
The Brunetti Family

I remember Maurice Sendak, the class artist at Lafayette High School (1944-46). He was quiet, modest, unassuming. I am awed by the mystery of genial creativity that flowed from him in subsequent years. Maurice's oeuvre is a gift to the world for all time.

May 09, 2012
I met you once after the showing of the Three Oranges at the Metropolitan Opera house several years back. I was young and shy and never got to tell you how many wonders you gave me through your gifts. I was actually planning on writing you, this very day to say what I was too guarded to say when I had a chance. Your stories and illustrations are imprinted in my memories, each time they are revisited a new story blossoms.
May 09, 2012
May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.

Maurice was a classmate of my mother at Lafayette High School in Brooklyn, NY. He was able in 2005, to make me a professional copy of a year book story my mom wrote in 1947 with a drawing for the story by Maurice. What a nice man to do that for me. Mike Marmer Germantown, MD

Who will Sit Shiva for you? Your parents, brother, sister, and partner are gone. Perhaps, we all will Sit Shiva -- in our hearts and minds.
We feel close to you. But yesterday we all have lost you... you, who made a significant, positive difference in our lives ... a genius who created memorable pictures and characters and stories and poems and opera sets and ideas and memories and beauty.
You gave a child permission to acknowledge his/her anger and fear. You created a path for a child to connect with someone in a book - Max, Pierre, Mickey, Rosie? You bared the reality of children who are homeless, of children who were about to die in the Holocaust.
Yet, in a magnificently strong and hopeful statement, when Max did return --you said that his supper was waiting for him, "and it was still hot."
Our hearts hurt... from the loss of you.
We will Sit Shiva for you. We will have cheesecake, remembering how much you liked it.
I recall the role your children's faces, showing anger, played in a rather resistant reader painfully learning to read. When I wrote to thank you, you graciously responded with pleasure. You certainly made a difference in that boy's life!
Yesterday, I added a second small "stuffed" Max to the one I always have in my pocketbook and said to him that I thought he needed company because his daddy had just died.
With great sadness... but with sincere gratitude for all you have given us, Maurice Sendak.
May 09, 2012

Family and friends can give us a degree of comfort. At times, however distress are beyond human remedies. Only God can give us comfort regardless of how distressing our situation may be. His word assures us He is near and hears our cry for help. (Psalm 145:18-19) But to receive Gods support and comfort, we must place our trust in him and he will become a secure height for anyone crushed, a secure height in times of distress, he will certainly not leave those looking for him.(Psalm 9:9-10)

I had the great pleasure of meeting Mr. Sendak, when I was Mayor of Cambridge and we were on the same program at MIT. We were sitting behind the stage waiting be introduced. It was a great opportunity just to speak with him, he was so gracious and a joy to be with. That day he brought with him Harriet Beatrice Potter's walking stick, which he was given has a gift by Harriet's husband, just to comfort him --- because he was shy.

I want to thank him again for what he did for many children and others to get them excited about reading.

He will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

Michael Sullivan

May 08, 2012
My condolences to the family Sendak...I feel my family has also lost a favored Uncle. As a child, I was terrified of the dark and the monsters in the closet (thanks to older siblings and a very mean babysitter). My Grandmother gave me a copy of "Wild Things" and a flashlight when I was seven...and I was never alone again. The copy has moved with me countless times and has been read into the eager ears of many many children. I'll never forget the moment my daughter (6 at the time), at her first Nutcracker, understood that the sets were designed by the same man who wrote Wild Things. The world opened. RIP Uncle Maurice....your words will live on.
May 08, 2012

My sincere condolences to the family and friends of the great Maurice Sendak. We have lost a national treasure. I enjoyed his wonderful stories and illustrations as much as my daughter did as I read to her when she was small. I especially loved his designs for the "Nutcracker" ballet and his collaboration with Carole King for "Really Rosie" was pure genius. Maurice Sendak is irreplaceble. We will not see his like again.

You were my inspiration as an illustrator, my hero as a child, and my children's favorite author. Thank you for everything.
May 08, 2012
I am so saddened to hear the news of Maurice's passing. I'm just one of millions of 40-something adults who grew up with "Where the Wild Things Are" and all his other books. I've read it to my own boys (5 & 7) several dozen times. Next week, their elementary school is holding their Spring Concert, and it just so happens that their theme is "Where the Wild Things Are", complete with song and dance and costumes. Perhaps it would touch his heart to see ~500 kindergarten, 1st & 2nd graders putting their feelings into the spirit of that book and performing for their families. Perhaps, wherever he is, he'll get to see it. God bless all his friends and loved ones who must surely be in pain at this time. Rest in peace, Maurice.
