Dr. Bronson was a wonderful man and doctor. He was a patient of mine at the dental clinic I was an assistant for,and I in turn became his patient. He was always so nice to me and seemed to always take care of his staff. I am so sorry to hear of his passing and will keep his family in my prayers.

Dear Pai-Pai, I just received an email with another legacy entry and saw the photos of Dr. Bronson in France and Ireland, of you and Ariel. What a beautiful family! I saw names of familiar former residents Dr. Sabini and Dr. Douchy and still have great memories of dermatology residency at Cook County Hospital under the leadership of Dr. Bronson. I still think of him often, his wisdom and remember what he taught me and all of us from 1994-7. I thank him so much for my career in dermatology and dermatopathology. He stood by me through residency and fellowship and years later. Dr. Bronson and Dr. Ackerman both mentored me and provided me the foundation for my future in dermatology. Dr. William Shellow, my colleague at the VA in Los Angeles also knew Dr. Bronson and remembers him fondly from Noah Worcester Dermatological Society. I hope you and Ariel are doing well and remaining strong. I will always keep the memory of Dr. Bronson alive and often share memories of him with residents I currently work with in Los Angeles at the VA Medical Center. Dr. Bronson passed away I believe on 8/31/12, coincidentally the same date as my father in 1997( he passed on same day as Princess Diana). Sorry if the date is wrong but I know it was over Labor Day weekend as this is the anniversary of my father's passing. The yahrzeit in Jewish faith is a tradition that honors the memory of our deceased loved ones annually by lighting a candle and reciting the Kaddish on the Hebrew date of the relatives passing. I light a candle every year for my father Dr. Ira Diamond. I also think of you Darryl Bronson. Thank you for keeping the legacy book open for all the lives he touched.

Dear Pai-Pai
I am saddened to learn of the passing of Your husband, Dr. Darryl Bronson. He was the best physicion I ever met in my life. I never felt so secure, comfortable and safe at any other doctors office. His love and admiration four you was strong and obvious: he constantly talked about you and his extended trips to different counties. He was brilliant physician but first of all- a man with a gold heart. My heart goes to you and your family.
August 13, 2013
To all my husband's patients, friends, colleagues and most importantly his residents whom he valued while he was alive and now I because in you his passion for medicine lives: thank you.

We miss him each and every day. A year ago, all we felt were pain and sadness. Today, near the anniversary of his death, I am able to share the following wisdom my sister, Mayling and brother-in-law, Zev , wrote to us. It is by Rabbi Harold M. Schulweis:

Fear - not of death or dying, but of not having lived.
Fear - not of suffering, but of suffering for no cause.
Fear - not of extinction of life, but of having left no trace upon the earth.
Take heart - Make this a life not lived in vain.
Take heart - Make this a life not lived for naught.

For Those Beloved Who Survive Me.
Mourn me not with tears, ashes, or sackcloth.
Nor dwell in darkness, sadness, or remorse.
Remember that I love you, and wish for you a life of song.
You can choose, you can act, you can transform the world.
My immortality is bound up with God's eternity, with God's justice, truth, and righteousness.
Honor me with laughter and with goodness.
With these, the better part of me lives on beyond the grave.

Darryl in his short life, had lived. He had made a difference in so many lives. He was a good golfer, a great husband, an exceptional father, and a truly caring physician and teacher.

Much love,

Pai-Pai

I also just learned of Dr. Bronson's passing after attempting to make an appointment to see him again. Dr. Bronson was one of the kindest and humblest doctors I've seen. I'm so sorry for his family, and for close friends in the medical field.

I am saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Darryl Bronson. Darryl was chief of dermatology at Cook County Hospital for much of my dermatology residency training there. He was a brilliant physician and devoted teacher. Darryl was uncompromising in the educational goals he set for his residents. My sincere condolences to Darryl's family. This is a great loss for his family, friends, students, patients, and to the field of dermatology.

Dear Dr. Bronson,I have just learned of your passing and I am deeply saddened with tears. Since having left Highland Park, IL, back in 1997, I have always been wanting to work again for just one physician who might compare as to the wonderful person, employer and physician you were. I recently came upon the possibility with a plastic surgeon and wanted to update my resume to expound on the physician you were and not just some ordinary doctor that I worked for. So, I was searching online this morning to check in on you and to see if you were still practicing and where if in Highland Park, and I continued to search and read, and I came across the sad news of your passing. I am so honored and was blessed to have worked with you in your Highland Park office as a Registered Nurse, along with Mary Jane, Elsie, and Virginia. I have such fond memories of you and the wonderful person and physician of the qualities you were. I am very greatful to you, taking me in as a newbie RN, and that I could learn from the excellent teacher that you were, always giving and shaing of your great knowledge. Working with you at your side in patient care was also rewarding to me of the true person you were personally and professionally. I will always remember who you were, and I am going to believe that I will work for one physician again who will have at least some qualities that you were. You left big shoes to fill! Thank you for being all that you were to me and all the lives you touched. I have always remembered your smile and having to look up to you, and now knowing that I will continue to look up and see you smiling as now your spirit is above me. Your qualities of your spirit will always be remembered. Renita Epple, RN, Phoenix, Arizona.

My Dad knew Dr. Bronson when he was a child and I had him as my Dermatologist. I went there yesterday and it wasn't the same without him there, but saw his awards and accomplishments and the wall and said a prayer. Both him and his family will stay in my prayers. The office is just as great and I know he would be happy knowing my alopecia is getting treated still. Seeing all his accomplishments really helps me set goals and makes him my role model

What can I say about the man I worked for for over five years, one word always comes to mind.... brilliant. It was my pleasure and my privilege to have worked for him. I miss him flying up and down the halls, standing in the nurses station discussing his patients and their care, and all his stories. He is sorely missed. Rest In Peace my friend.
September 26, 2012
I would like to express my most sincere gratitude to Dr. Bronson's family for sharing Darryl with myself and the countless physicians in training that he both taught and mentored. I learned a great deal about dermatology and life as a dermatologist from Dr. Bronson. I am saddened to think that he is no longer with us. My sympathies to you in this time of loss.
September 20, 2012
I was totally shocked and saddened to learn about Darryl's passing. He has been a wonderful friend and mentor since the very first day I joined the Cook County residency program. I will always remember him. To Paipai and Ariel, our deepest sympathy.....
September 17, 2012
My heartfelt condolences to Darryl's family. I was one of the many dermatology residents he trained at Cook County Hospital. He not only gave us all a wonderful dermatology education, but also taught us how to be kind, patient, friendly and respectful in our work, because he was all those things to everyone he ever met. Then I was fortunate enough to continue my career not too far away from his private practice . . . and so we continued to be colleagues. I loved seeing him at local meetings as a colleague - he always would stop in his tracks (as he would do for anyone) to say a friendly greeting - seemed genuinely happy to see me. He was a man of much knowledge and importance, but he always made me (and so many others) feel so knowledgeable and important. He had a warm, genuine smile, and never said an unkind word about anybody.

Just the other day, I saw a patient of Darryl's whose beloved dermatologist had just passed away. I was afraid to ask who the dermatologist was - I loved learning from Darryl and being a colleague of Darryl, but this is not what was supposed to happen. As it turned out, this gentleman and I ended up spending a good part of his visit sharing our fond memories of Darryl - both trying to remember if we ever thanked him for all that he had given us.

If I didn't thank Darryl, let me at least thank you, Pai-Pai and Ariel, for sharing Darryl with us residents. I know we took a lot of his time. Just know that whenever he would talk about you two, that ear-to-ear smile would appear on his face. Ariel, I know you must have the same kindness in you that your dad had (and certainly the same wonderful smile) - continue sharing that in his honor.
September 17, 2012
We found out about Darryl's passing from the owner of a restaurant where Darryl, Pai-Pai and we spent many a wonderful evening. All of us were also patients of his. We are speechless to learn that he will be with us no longer. He was a wonderful man and will be missed. Lynn, Brad and Erik
September 13, 2012
After reading the beautiful words of Dr. Bronson's patients, I can see what he was such a respected dermatologist. He was a leader in the profession, but nothing matches the love and respect of one's own patients. The Chicago Dermatological Society will miss you, Darryl.
September 12, 2012
My sincere condolences for you at this time. May God bring you peace and comfort during this difficult time.

I can only add..."He made the world a better place". I will miss him. I remember the time he and Pei-Pei had us to their home on Ravin Oaks Ln. - good memories.

September 08, 2012
Like so many others, I was deeply saddened to learn of Darryl's death. He was a top-notch dermatologist and a kind and caring man. We always had fun sharing stories about golf. Darryl was courageous in dealing with his own frightening illness, and he never ceased caring for his patients. I will always be grateful for his professional advice and his caring attitude.

September 07, 2012
My deepest sympathies to the family. I knew Darryl professionally as a highly respected physician. He was also a very nice man.
September 07, 2012
I am deeply saddened by your loss of such a special man. Dr. Bronson was my family's dermatologist for over 30 years. He had the unique ability to not only remember you, but make you feel like you were his only patient during the short time you spent with him.

A great loss not only to his patients, but as an exemplary role model for young doctors establishing their practices.
September 07, 2012
I called on Dr. Bronson as a pharmaceutical rep and device rep. He was no doubt one of my favirite people to meet with. The things that stood out most to me were his honesty, good humor, and overall disposition. During a training session, I saw his interaction with a few of his patients and they absolutely loved having him as a doctor. Farewell to a wonderful dermatologist and man. I send my condolences to the people closest to him.
September 07, 2012
So sad to learn of Darryl's passing. I go back to Highland Park H.S. golf team days with him with fond memories. When I was referred to Doc for medical reasons we reconnected. Twice a year, a routine examination turned into a golf clinic as that was the only subject discussed. We began a yearly challenge match that we called the Omelet Open where we'd get up at the crack of dawn and play for who bought breakfast. The competition was fierce but all in good fun. I knew something wasn't right when we couldn't connect this summer. I will miss the fun we had and the comfort level I felt that I was being treated by the very best.

Verne Reich, Highland Park
September 06, 2012
I am so sorry for your loss. I enjoyed my visits with Dr Bronson and often did nothing more than talk about golf and our children. Ariel & Eleanor, your Dad was extremely proud of you. I feel like I lived through the college days at Tulane and HPHS.
September 06, 2012
I remembered what dry jokes he had to tell & never laughed to indicate to me that it was in fact a joke. I soon learned years later....so funny he was. He was so open and would not hold back anything. If he had something to say, he said it in truth. He'll be missed.
September 06, 2012
Darryl was a tremendous colleague: professional, ethical, knowledgeable, focused and fun. He was ever ready to participate and do more than his fair share of the work-- and always with perfection and without complaint.
He made such an impact in the world of dermatology but also on the many who have been blessed to have known him.
September 06, 2012
I brought my son to see Dr. Bronson after so many years of unsuccessful treatment for his acne. I can only say that as he treated him, I grew to have a great respect and admiration for him, not just because of his knowledge but also his manner. He was always very polite and even joked a bit with my son. He knew how completely alone he felt and ashamed of his skin. It saddened both of us to hear of his passing. I wanted to extend my thanks to him and the office at HP-thank you Dr. Bronson for giving my son his life back. We will not forget you.
September 06, 2012
Darryl was such a wonderful man. He was a brilliant physician and teacher and a mentor to me and many other resident physicians at the Cook County Dermatology Residency program He prepared me,and so many others so well for our careers in Dermatology. He will be dearly missed and I was so saddened to hear about his passing.

May his soul rest in peace
September 05, 2012
Dr. Bronson will live on in all his teachings to his many students. I will be forever indebted to him, and I cherish all the time he spent with us as a mentor and friend. I've uploaded a photo of our dinner at the Elysian last spring. Howard and I will have Pei-Pei and Ariel in our thought and prayers.
September 05, 2012
Darryl & Pei Pei were my garage tenants in Lake View as young couple when Ariel was a child.

Darryl treated me pro bono for years because we had become friendly when they rented my garage. I asked him to charge me many times. He never did, even when I was on Medicare.

With sadness for your family.
September 05, 2012
Dear Bronson Family, no words will take away the pain of the loss of such a wonderful husband, father, brother and son but try to take some solace in knowing how respected, revered, appreciated and loved he was by so many. While his golf trip to Ireland this past June was a struggle, he perservered and played 9 rounds in a row. The 7 guys with him were impressed with his will and strength of mind. He was a true mensch and will be missed.

September 05, 2012
I am stunned to hear of Darryl's passing. I clearly remember my interview with Darryl for a residency position and feeling a warmth and genuine nature from him that I had not experienced elsewhere. It was a dream to be accepted to Cook County Hospital's dermatology training program and train under his guidance for three years. I owe my career to him. I wish I had the chance to thank him personally again, but that will have to wait now. I hope the Bronson family finds peace in his passing and adjusts to the large hole in their lives. Thanks Darryl. You will be missed.

As a fellow past-president of both Illinois and Chicago Dermatological Societies we all very much mourn the loss of our valued colleague Darryl Bronson. He was a valued leader in our dermatological community and a highly respected dermatologist and dermatopathologist whose opinions were often sought. He was also a great mentor and teacher for many area dermatologists. May his memory be a blessing.
September 04, 2012
My sincerest condolences. I was shocked when I heard of his passing. As a fellow golfer, we talked all the time, during my visits to him as one of his patients, competing for a time on the Weekly Challenge Golf Tour (at his suggestion) and spending countless hours talking golf when we'd see each other at the HP driving range; even on the eve of Rosh Hashanah one year! I loved hearing the stories of his golf trips as well as being envious of the places he played. Unfortunately, we never were able to connect our schedules to play together.
He will be missed. In sympathy for your loss... may you know no further sorrow.
September 04, 2012
My deepest gratitude to Dr. Bronson not only for his work at Cook County in regards to patient care, but for his time spent teaching us residents and personally for contributing to help me pass the boards. Rest in peace.

Meditations from Rabbi Harold M. Schulweis to family:

*Fear of Death
Fear - not of death or dying, but of not having lived.
Fear - not of suffering, but of suffering for no cause.
Fear - not of extinction of life, but of having left no trace upon the earth.
Take heart
Make this a life not lived in vain.
Take heart
Make this a life not lived for naught.

*For Those Beloved Who Survive Me
Mourn me not with tears, ashes, or sackcloth.

My Uncle Darryl Bronson was the best of men: as consummate a physician and he was a father. When I think of him, I think of how many adventures we shared all over the world. He was afraid of nothing; always the first in line to try new things and always there to give lend his support in the face of hardship. He was passionate, humanistic and unerring in his devotion to his great loves: medicine, golf, food and most of all, Pai Pai and Ariel. I will always miss him.

My deepest sympathies to the Bronson family. I had the privilege of knowing Dr. Bronson and learning dermatopathology from him during my three years of dermatology residency at Cook County. We always enjoyed his stories about his travels, his love of golf, and his family. He was a brilliant mind and great teacher. I was shocked to learn of his passing. Rest in peace, Darryl. You will be missed.

I was Dr. Bronson`s patient for the past ten years. He was a brilliant physician and a kind and caring person. He elevated the practice of medicine to new heights. The loss is enormous.

Dear Pai Pai and Ariel. We're still reeling from the tragic news of Darryl's passing. We knew from you that he was ill but had no idea how seriously ill he was. He had returned to his practice so we assumed that he was on the road to recovery. I was looking forward to visiting with him on my next appointment in October and catch up on all of his latest accomplishments which you had to pry out of him unless it was about his golf and what special eating place he recommends this trip and what to order as well. We kept hoping that this might be the year that we could get him out on the curling ice with you but now that can never happen. Dear Pai Pai and Ariel, our hearts ache knowing how much you will miss him in your lives and hope that with the love and support of your family and friends, it will help to comfort you and lessen your pain. Your fine husband, best friend, Dad and dermatologist will be missed by everyone whose lives he touched. Lots of love, Bob and Marilyn Wilson

Not only was Darryl the kindest, most generous, most faithful friend I have ever had, he was the bravest. Not once did he ever reveal the true seriousness of his health. To the very end all he cared about was other people. With Paipai keeping his secret we always felt he would get better. He will be in our hearts forever. We all have lost a very special person.

Upon just learning of Dr. Darryl Bronson's untimely passing I am deeply saddened and feel the dermatology community has lost a wonderful physician. I wished I could have thanked him again for believing in me when I was a resident in his program at Cook County Hospital from 1994-7. He inspired me to become a dermatopathologist during my residency and he was a "Bernies Bud" along with myself, Dr. Bruce Bennin and several others in the program. Affectionately known as " the Darryl" he was loved by his residents and students because he was actually a very involved chairman who made sure I was reading Lever, Fitzpatrick, Rook,Ackerman Inflammatory Diseases of the skin. He quizzed me on obscure cutaneous fungi, requiring medline searches. He personally reviewed my gross and microscopic symposia abstracts and was so proud of his residents presenting at the AAD and Chicago Dermatologic Society. He taught me how to photograph dermpath slides for Chicago Derm Society. We toured ground zero together and then ate great Sushi during Summer Academy 2004 in New York, I will never forget this. This was just too soon. I hope his suffering was not prolonged. To his family my deepest condolences. Dr. Hilary D. Mandel

This news comes as such a shock, a great life cut too short. Darryl Bronson was a wonderful, kind person with a warm sense of humor. During my residency at Cook County. I learned that he was a great teacher but also someone that cared a great deal about his patients and residents. My deepest condolences go out to his family. He will be truly missed.

As a patient for perhaps the last 10 or 12 years, I enjoyed our annual meetings and was looking forward to the next office visit in October. With Dr. Bronson, I was always comfortable while we would discuss family, interests, and of course he would tell me about his beloved golf. Even though it was a short once a year visit as Dr. Bronon's patient, I have a strong feeling of loss. So, to the family my wife and I give our condolences to a man who touched our hearts and lives.

Last night I was looking in the obits for funeral info for someone I used to know. When I went to scroll through the names, I saw Dr. Bronson's name. I've been seeing him for over 30 years and I just couldn't believe what I was seeing, that it was his obit and he had passed away. All I could think was No! Not him! It can't be. I have a reminder note to call him on Tuesday to make an appointment, how can this be?

Dr. Bronson was one of the greatest doctors in his field, I'm sure the greatest. Through his entire career he taught and he volunteered his time to help people in need. He just did so much good for so many people. As my doctor, no matter how many years might go by without seeing me he always recognized and remembered me. I've seen him a little more in recent years due in part because of an auto-immune illness I have. Throughout all these years he always took the time to listen to me. I never once felt rushed like you do with so many doctors. And he was always so patient and understanding. He would remember where I worked and when I moved out of the area and remember things I had been doing and always ask how things were going. I remember one Saturday night  a long time ago, he was out for dinner and I had just seen him the day before and was in a lot of pain. I called and interrupted his dinner 3 or 4 times that night. Not once did he sound irritated at all. He was kind and he was patient and made it sound like he had nothing else he could be doing. I know I made him crazy that night! Not only was he an amazing doctor, he was an amazing man and a truly beautiful person. I'm beyond saddened by hearing of his passing. Due to my illness, I don't know if I will be able to attend the service, but I will be there in spirit and I believe he knows this.

So today, I feel such deep sadness at the loss of such a wonderful person. I feel honored, lucky, and blessed to have known him. My prayers go out to his family and friends for the loss they are suffering.

RIP Dr. Darryl Bronson. You will always be in my heart and you will never be forgotten. And your legend will live on forever.

It is with deep sympathy and sadness that I would like to express our condolences to Pai- Pai, Ariel, Omri, Corinne, Steven and Darryl's entire family. Darryl was an intelligent, thoughtful and quiet man whom many were privileged to know. I have known Darryl since 1968 as we grew up in the same wonderful community of Highland Park, just north of Chicago.

I would like to say that when Marda and I considered leaving Highland Park, there was only one person who I would have considered turning my suburban patients over to and that was Darryl. Besides being an excellent golfer, which we enjoyed together, he was a doctor's doctor- always professional, ethical, and knowledgeable. With a caring demeanor he always treated his patients like family. Since we moved away, many of my patients have called me to tell me how sad they were that I had left, but that how happy they were with Darryl's fine care.

Please accept our expression of sadness and we hope that knowing you are in the hearts and thoughts of others will help you through this time of sorrow. I imagine that Darryl's loss is quite difficult now; I hope that looking back at your memories will comfort you always.

With Deep Sympathy,

Andy, Marda, Michael & Jordyn Lazar

Steve and I were fortunate to be neighbors of Darryl and Pei-Pei when they lived on Ravinoaks Lane. Have such fond memories of Ariel as a little girl... beautiful I should add.

We later found out that both Darryl and I had attended Highland Park High School and that his father, Bob, was the photographer at our wedding. What a small world and now the world has been diminished by his untimely death

We send our condolences to Pei-Pei and Ariel and pray that Darryl will rest in eternal peace.

Much Love,
Carol and Stephen Weiss

Twenty seven years ago, Darryl Bronson walked into my one year old Histology Laboratory and asked me if I wanted to process his cases for him. This was the start of a long, wonderfully blessed working relationship which began with a handshake agreement and stayed that way for 27 years. Darryl remained the most loyal person I ever had the honor to know. And he remained the same kind, caring and loyal man over all these many years. We worked very well together. He is so much a part of my life's story. I will miss him more than I can express in words. I will cherish the last texts we communicated to each other......so very, very sweet. My heart goes out to you Pai Pai, Ariel and the rest of your family as well. May all the memories being shared, from the many people who knew Darryl, be as beautiful gifts bringing you joy and peace. May God rest his soul.
