Bertha Jong Sheng Hsu Liang, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, returned to our Lord on September 17, 2016, surrounded by her husband, sons, daughter-in-law, sisters, and friends. Bertha was born on December 17, 1943 at Guijen, Tainan, Taiwan. She graduated from Tainan First Girl's High School and from National Cheng Kung University where she studied English literature. She married George Liang on April 29, 1967, starting a joyful 49-year journey of loving God, serving the Lord, and enjoying adventures together. Following her husband's career as a foreign born physician practicing in the USA, she immigrated to the USA, lived in various cities, and gave birth to three sons. Wherever they went, they engaged in the fellowship of American, Taiwanese or Chinese Christians and served their Lord. Bertha dedicated her life to her family: a devoted and selfless mother, faithful supporter of her husband's medical practice, and a trustworthy deacon and elder in various churches. They lived in Chicago for 37 years and moved to Houston in 2015 for treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center and to be close to her son and family. She fought her kidney cancer valiantly for over 13 years and experienced numerous miracles and the loving care of fellow Christians along the way. She witnessed for our Lord, leading many people to Christ. Her daily interactions with people and testimonies steadied and strengthened the faith of many. She is survived by her husband George Liang, her three sons and their wives--Griffith and wife Marion, Jeffrey and wife Pam, Ivan and wife Priscilla, and six grandchildren--Jonathan, Jacob, Sarah, Gracie, Marisa, and Matthew. She is survived by her siblings Jong Chien, Jong Shiou, Jong Fuu, Jong Chong, and Jong Chen. " Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: "Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all." Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates."--Proverbs 31: 28-31 Visitation will be on Sunday, October 2 from 6-8pm at The Settegast-Kopf Company at Sugar Creek, 15015 Southwest Freeway, Sugar Land, TX, 77479. We will celebrate her life on Monday, October 3 at 11am at Formosan Presbyterian Church in Greater Houston, 2401 S Dairy Ashford Rd, Houston, TX 77077. In lieu of flowers or customary remembrances, contributions may be directed to The Liang's Charity Foundation, Fidelity Charitable, Account # 69418. John14:1-3 (NIV) "Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father's house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.

Dear Liang Pa Pa, We feel so sorry to hear the passing of Liang Ma Ma. We missed those days when we stayed at the lake point tower in 2008. Liang Ma Ma was so caring to offer any assistance when we needed. Especially when my mom was injured and hospitalized in the emergency room of Northwestern memorial hospital. Liang Ma Ma and your visits and prayer warmed our hearts. I believe Liang Ma Ma is in a better place now. May the LORD's grace and mercy be with you and your family.

We remember meeting Bertha about 17 years ago when we visited the chinese Christian Union Church in Church. When Bertha heard we were missionaries in Taiwan, she immediately began to share her resources to support our living and serving the Lord there. It has been a 17 year period where we have been blessed richly by your family. 14 years ago, when Bertha heard that my wife was scheduled for heart surgery at the Mayo Clinic, she immediately got us in contact with a Chinese Church there. We had know no one in Rochester and were facing going there for a major surgery without the care of others and because of Bertha's love for my wife, we experienced incredible care and love from a fellowship of believers there. She loved more than with words, she loved us in deeds and we are so thankful for those few short times when we interacted with Bertha on our trips to the US. Because of her care, we have experienced many more churches that have given sacrificially to our serving the Lord in Taiwan for 22 years and now in China most recently. May God pour out His grace on mercy on you George as you grieve the passing of your bride.

I was just thinking about calling you up these days, because we have recently arrived in Boston from Taiwan. I will be visiting Harvard for a year as a visiting scholar. Yoshing and I and the two kids are here together. And then I am shocked by this message of yours. You are my family in Christ. Liangma is just like my grandma. Yoshing and I are sad to hear Liangma's departure. We extend to you and the family our deepest condolence. As we have only recently settled, with kids attending school, I will discuss with Yoshing whether I can come to visit. If not, still our hearts and prayers go out with you.

Dear Liang Ba,
We are so sad to hear that Liang Ma has passed away. She helped us to take the way The GOD prepared for us and offered so much encouragement and help during our visit to The University of Chicago. We always bear the memory of the fellowship she took efforts to host and the happy time we gather together to study the word of the GOD.Nothing can express our sadness for loss of the mother, the elder and the teacher in the Biblical study. She devote herself to help us but require nothing for reward. We believe, as a loyal servant to the GOD, HE have arranged an amazing plan for her eternal life.
As to you, we hope that you can recover from the loss and take care of yourself. If you come to mainland China, please be our guest.

Dear George,
Sorry to hear the bad news of passing away of Bertha.
I still remember very vividly those days in Chicago when we were junior attending physicians struggled toget established. Our regularly monthly classmate reunion meetings gave a lot of support for our hardship. Her kindness and positive attitude made it easier for us toget through thedown time. We miss her!
The last time we saw each other was during the classmate reunion in Taiwan in 2006. Physically she was a bit frail but was in good spirit. During the train ride for this reunion tripon Sunday, sheinvited the Christian classmates to have a brief servicein the quiet section of the train.Bertha and Georgeare devoted Christians. During these years of her fighting with illness, her faith must be a great support for her and the family.
Please accept our sympathy and condolence and maythe grace of God be with you and your family at this difficult time!

Dear George: My condolence for the passing of Bertha. It is so sad that she had to leave you early but as a devoted Christian, she is in God's hand and will continue to look after you and your family.
I first met Bertha in our 40 years reunion of one week Hawaii cruise . She arranged a short bus trip while touring the Island of Big Island(?). We have 10 people in the bus and had good chance of knowing each other. I remember her smile, mild manner and devoted to you and friends. We had a good time together.
Later we were in Chicago and was invited to your huge condo and had dinner with you. All this time she looks healthy, happy and do not appear to have health problem. That is why I am shock to hear the news of her passing.
Now 50 years reunion is approaching and I am sure we will have less classmates than we had 10 years ago. That is life. So difficult to let go all of this world we have good fortunate to live in, right? but we have to sooner or later.
I do remember Bertha and you have a successful son in Rhematology. Hope you take good care of yourself.
