I had the pleasure of knowing Gil through countless petition drives, campaign rallies, sweaty parades and frozen election days.
When it came to persuading strangers to sign a petition or protecting the polls from the wolves, Gil was tough as nails. But underneath, he was hilarious, observant, easy-going and good-hearted.
I'm glad I never played Tetris with him. Sincere condolences to Adolfa and Gil, Jr.

Early Sunday morning, I lost the greatest man I have ever known.
My father taught me everything he knew, and more importantly, he taught me the frameworks so I could learn everything else he didn't know.
He was an Electrical Engineer. He was an educator who taught English as a Second Language and gave Citizenship classes to countless immigrants for free, helping hundreds of them attain their citizenship over the past 30 years.
He was a United States veteran who served in the Vietnam War.
He was a grandfather who dropped everything at the sight and sound of his granddaughter, and constantly snuck $20 bills into her pocket.
He was the only person who could ever rival me in Tetris.
He taught me what it means to be a father, a loving person, and a decent human being.
Sunday morning, I was fortunate enough to hold his hand during his departure from this life. He is at peace now and begins a new journey in the afterlife.
I love you dad. Thank you for being my guide for these 34 years.
