John was always so kind, positive, nurturing and intelligent. We will miss him dearly. Our sympathy to his family. His friends at the Lincoln Park Conservancy.

I am very sorry for your loss. I got to know John in recent years as he was an alumnus of the School of Education of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I enjoyed our conversations very much. He was kind and thoughtful and I appreciate knowing him.

Janis and I send our condolences to the Martins family. Though we had limited contact with John after we moved to Ohio in 1990, it was always a joy visiting him every Labor Day weekend to celebrate the music at the Chicago Jazz Fest. John was not just a warm and inviting host; he was an interesting, compelling conversationalist and raconteur. John's joy of living, which he tangibly embodied in each and every moment, was particularly evident in his diversified intellectual, energy and service projects. John was more than a good friend; he was an inspirational, compelling reminder that we frail humans can reach to the stars. Thank you so much, John, for being a star in our lives. We'll miss your vital, loving presence.

My deepest heartfelt condolences. I had the honor of meeting and talking with John, I'm just so sorry I didn't get the opportunity to be in his presence again.
