Roslyn Mae Boxerman Woolf

Roslyn Woolf Obituary

Roslyn Mae Boxerman Woolf, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, cousin, and friend to many, known for her long years of service as a teacher with the Waukegan Public Schools District and her variety of community service involvements, found peace at 10:15 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 17, 2007. After a two month battle with an aggressive form of leukemia, she entered the Midwest Palliative and Hospice Care Center in Skokie on Nov. 9, surrounded by her family and friends. Roz was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Esther Boxerman, her brother Melvin Boxerman and her daughter Lori Woolf. Roz is survived by her beloved husband of over 55 years, David Woolf; daughter Gail Woolf and spouse Michael Strudler with their sons Jason and Zachary; son Michael (Mick) Woolf and spouse Lauren Senoff with their son Joshua; sister Miriam Brill, in Clearwater, FL; and numerous relatives and friends. Born on Oct. 2, 1931, and raised in Waukegan, Roz graduated from high school in 1948. She was involved with dance from a young age, traveling to various locales for instruction and performance. She became the second graduate from the first modern dance classes at the University of Illinois, receiving a BA in Physical Education and Dance. On June 29, 1952, shortly after college, Roz married her fiancé, David Woolf, a professional musician. Focusing on a teaching career in elementary school, her first job was in Wilmette, then in the Waukegan School District at Lyons, Hyde Park and Cooke Magnet, until her retirement in 1988. While a teacher and mother of three, she received her Masters in Education through Roosevelt University in Chicago, was active in the PTO and served as Vice-President of the local chapter of the American Federation of Teachers. After retirement, Roz continued to substitute teach, mentor younger teachers, and remain in the educational field with World Book Encyclopedia and Westat Educational Testing. Roz was a long-standing active participant with the American Association of University Women (AAUW), Altrusa, the Lake County Women's Coalition, the Festival of Trees, Friends of the Library, the Lake County Retired Teachers Association, and numerous Jewish organizations through Temple Am Echod. She loved children and was a natural with them. She was highly creative, understood how to motivate her students and cared about their overall well being. She was truly a dedicated master teacher who was well loved and well respected by generations of students, parents, and teachers alike. Roz was known as the cousin and aunt who always remembered the birthdays and anniversaries of the successive generations of extended family through phone calls and cards, serving as the lynch pin in keeping family and friends connected. Always concerned that her grandsons were receiving good educations along with their creative development, she shared articles on child rearing, teaching materials and sent fun gifts for the kids. Roz was very social, loved to entertain and attend events, parties and weddings. She worked as a hostess at both Midlane Country Club and The Forge Club. She was a lover of the arts, music and dance, enjoyed traveling and held varied interests such as history, geography, child development, plants, architecture, and more. A pragmatic, spirited, and loving person with a great sense of humor, Roz's essence was indeed about living life to the fullest. The family has set up a scholarship in her name to help a deserving high school student attend college. Contributions can be made payable to: "Waukegan Public Schools" by including "Roz Woolf Scholarship" in the memo section. Inquiries and donations can be addressed to: Mr. Brian Luosa, Director of Business Services, Waukegan Public Schools, 1201 N. Sheridan Rd., Waukegan, IL. 60085. The Waukegan Public Schools Board of Education will issue a Lifetime Service Achievement Award on behalf of Roz through a proclamation at the Jan. 8, 2008, Board meeting, 7 p.m., on the second floor of the Lincoln Center, 1201 N. Sheridan Rd. The family will host a Celebration of Roz's life, Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008, at Waukegan High School, 2325 Brookside Ave., from 1 to 3 p.m., for family, friends, and community members. A reception will be held immediately following the program. If you are interested in sharing a story, memory, or anecdote about Roz, please send them to Mick Woolf, c/o WEFT, PO Box 1223, Champaign, IL. 61824-1223, or e-mail [email protected].

How do you sum up 46 years if time spent with someone you Love dearly and has always been there for you, no matter what? For someone like me, who is supposed to be so good with words, I find that words are at this point failing me, because the simple answer is, you don't. You try to read all the random thoughts that flash through your mind and remember the high points. And with Aunt Roz, the high points make up one very long list.

You remember all the holidays spent in company with the family, and smile at the memories of charades, speeches, and great food. You recall all the times you had a problem with some particularly difficutl homework and Aunt Roz helped you figure it out, by making you come up with the answer yourself. And you remember with a bit of shame the times when you got into trouble of one sort of another (a fairly regular occurrence with me!), and Aunt Roz speaking to you about it, but without being judgmental or sanctimonious. You also recall how she encouraged your daughter to pursue her dream of becoming a teacher herself when she got older. And you latch on to the memories of your aunt listening to your hopes and dreams, no matter how far-fetched, without condescension or ridicule, and giving you ideas and avenues of approach to try to further those dreams.

I am one of the group of very fortunate people who was given the gift of being allowed to spend 46 years on this earth with Roz Woolf. And in that stretch of years, I always knew that I was sharing time with someone very special. And Aunt Roz always made me feel that, in some way, I was also. She taught me, as she did so many people, about life and Love. And although she may be gone in body, she will live on with us forever through our memories of the very special person we were lucky enough to be allowed to spend time with. Aunt Roz, you will be greatly missed. I Love you.

It was over 62 years ago that loving, smiling little Roz showed us how well and how graceful a cheerleader twirls her baton. We fell in love with Roz instantly and forever after.

The charm and pleasure of this unusual beginning continued without interruption after Jack got out of his naval officer's uniform until her sad and untimely demise. She once escorted a class of students on a bus trip to Washington, and we had a happy reunion. We visited Waukegan numerous times; and with Gail and Michael and their sons living in our neck of the woods in Maryland - Roz and David, who helped complete the happy picture, visited our area and often were our guests. We often gathered to celebrate that occasion as well as special ones. They were truly like family and we loved them both, and will go on loving David just the same, and that goes for Gail and her family as well.

To complete this warm picture and to help understand it, you need to know that we were newlyweds when Jack was assigned to Great Lakes after a long tour of duty in North Africa. Her Boxerman family and the Goodmans literally adopted us and made our stay in Waukegan absolutely delightful. We were included in everything they did socially and beyond that. For example, they found us places to live in a very tight market; and when Jack and the night shift, they insisted that Fran stay with them if she could. We will never forget that hospitality, caring and friendship.

Roz - God bless her soul - was a chip off the old block. We miss her deeply and always will. May her sweet soul and memory be a blessing.

Roz was my cousin, my sorority sister and my friend. Before we were giving each other handshakes at the Phi Sig House, we were kissing hello at the cousins club meetings.

We spent time together in Champaign, where she was a sneior and I was a lowly freshman. She was always there for me, making me feel comfortable in the House.

She chose me to be a bridesmaid in her wedding and I remember the unblievably hot day in June when she married her sweetheart, David. It was an honor to be part of their special day. Through the years we got together with other cousins and kept up with our growing families.

Roz was a loving and caring gal who always wore a smile, even when life was challenging. She loved teaching and was devoted to her students. Just as she was devoted to her family. She was active in many organizations, always helping others along the way.

She worked hard, but enjoyed her life, especially her time with David, Gail, Lori, Mick and the Grandchildren.

Roz will be dearly missed by all.

Love, Sissie

Hi Mick:

Just a quick note to tell you how wonderful the service was for your
mom. So many wonderful memories shared by the family. I only knew her in later years, so this opened a whole world for me, as it did for many others, I'm sure.

For me, and for other Friends Board members you're mom was the "hostess with the mostest" and she knew exactly how we should
put on our "social" events. She loved entertaining, the tables were
always perfect, the food trays very attractively displayed, and from the comments about your mom that was just her way.

I laughed because a time or two I had your parents at the membership table for the book sales, but that didn't work because between the two of them they knew almost
everyone who walked in the door, your mom making them feel welcome and your dad chatting about this and that. If we needed to move a lot of people in and out, forget about having the Woolfs at the door - there was always a bottleneck!

We're hoping to get your dad back, at least occasionally. We have a section of the book store that deals with music, the fellow who stocks that area is a former band director and a musician himself, and hopefully we'll get your dad involved working with him. Your folks gave so much of themselves and we feel blessed to have had their support.

When Dave Woolf said:
'That's it, Roz'
He tilted back his big shoulders
And blew that horn

Was that just him?
Or something bigger?

For a moment in time
It seems like to me
The world still still
Gave a graceful curtsy,
Nodded to Roz Woolf and said,
"thanks" ...

Mrs. Woolf was my 3rd grade teacher at Hyde Park School in 1963. I adored her. She made every student feel special. She called me her little teddy bear, and I thrived, as all of us did, as her students. Throughout the years, whenever we saw each other, she would greet me so warmly and hug me, always bringing me back to that happy classroom. I am sure she continued to treat each and every student that same wonderful way. She was someone who made the world a much better place by her presence, and her legacy will continue for generations. I will never forget her.

Dad, Gail& Mick,
Words do not come easy for me at a time like this; No matter how prepared we think we are seeing our loved one suffer hits our minds and hearts hard. As I still mourn for my own father. Roz was a second mother to me, I called her mom and she called me son, She was such a support to me in my early years as a student trying to find himself and such a support for me as a father. I do thank her for all the guidance she gave me during difficult times in making a decision in education for my children. I am truly thankful for the times I had with her. All the Rose family shares in your loss and grief.

How sad it was to read of the memorial service for Roz. It was the first I'd heard of her passing. I first met Roz when I was a new teacher at McCall School, and Roz was a substitute teacher. She was always so friendly and helpful whenever I saw her. It was such a pleasure to chat with her in the teacher's lounge, and such a relief if she would be subbing in my classroom.

Even after I left teaching and moved out of state, I would occasionally run into Roz during a visit home, especially at the library book sales. She always remembered my name, and took the time to chat for a while. It was truly a privilege to know her.

Ralph and Georgia Robinson

January 19, 2008

Ralph and I think of all the times we spent with Roz, David and the family over the years. One of those events we talked about was on a trip to Mexico. We went to see a waterfall along the coast. We were greeted by guides to lead us to the waterfall. We hired a young lad and burros to climb to the waterfall. By the way the young guides' Uncle owed the burros. So over the wadi, up the mountain to the waterfall and back again. We still have snapshots to remind us of our great adventure. This is just one of many things to remember in our times together over the years. However, it is one of many events that will keep Roz in our memories.

Dear Mick,

The Waukegan Area Branch of AAUW (American Association of University Women) have named their local scholarship in honor of Roz Woolf this year. Your mother was a long-time active member of this organization. All of our membership will miss her good cheer and willingness to serve. She was a great lady!

I first encountered Roz when we were little kids at the Metzler School of Dance here in Waukegan. She and I are long-term residents and supporters of this city. We both taught and retired from Waukegan Public Schools.

Your dad and mom and my husband and I have served on the board of the Friends of the Library. She was a great asset to every project in which she was involved.

As president of our local branch of AAUW, I would be happy to say a few words (or be of any other assistance) at your mother's memorial service.

Let me know if I can be of help.

My deepest sympathy.

January 19, 2008

Dear Mick,

What a lovely obituary! It truly honored your Mom. We were so saddened by your Mom's death but we know she is in a better place. She was truly a remarkable woman, as you know. But for me she was a special friend, who never asked but gave so freely. I always knew she cared about me and my family and just recently, June 2007 when my Mom passed she and your Dad were there for me.

Our thoughts are with you and the entire family at this time. I look forward to her memorial service in January -- it is most fitting that she be honored both then and at the school board meeting.

God bless you all, most sincerely, Jane Yoder (neighbor, fellow teacher, AAUW member and friend!)

I'm really sorry Mick. You showed so much patience and understanding and love, in spite of such a horrible situation, especially with the distance and the hospital situation. I'm not going to try to give any uplifting words here. Dying is hard and it hurts, and you've been through more than your share of it. I guess we all will sooner or later. I am sorry for your loss.

I hope the gathering on the 20th goes well. Those things are hard, but they're often cathartic. I'll keep you and your family in my thoughts in the coming weeks.

Dear Mick......Sam and I are so sorry that we are unable to attend your mother's memorial....we have a family commitment that cannot be changed.

Please give our best to your Dad and to Gail.....Roz was always one of my favorite people in the whole world....a remarkable person, kind, sweet, intelligent, and with a smile on her face at all times....good and bad..we were blessed to have known her and she will always remain in our memories. We will send a tribute in her name to the scholarship fund....a wonderful way to honor a remarkable lady.

A celebration of the life of our Aunt Roz…well I'm finding it difficult to celebrate. I miss her so. She was the most loving, wonderful, giving and thoughtful person. She was like a second mother to me my whole life.

I miss that I can’t just pick-up the phone and call her whenever I feel like it. We stayed very much in touch. There is a void in my heart that needs to be filled, so I'm trying to fill it with remembered joys and the aunt friendships that we shared, and in remembering Aunt Roz we get to keep what was best and dearest as treasures forever in our hearts.

She was not only an aunt to me but a great friend. When we talked on the phone she could fill me in on everything. She especially loved talking about Gail’s family and Mick's family and how proud she was of her grandchildren.

I think Aunt Roz was the only person I know that knew everybody's birthdays and anniversaries and special dates, from our immediate families to all our spouses and children to my granddaughter, which I'm so glad she got to meet.

I regret that I was unable to travel to see her when she was so ill, but my mom and daughter Lindsey did go and as Lindsey repeated to me, she and Aunt Roz did talk for a while about teaching (Lindsey's and Aunt Roz’s passion) I know that talk meant so much to her.

Aunt Roz's time here was all to brief, but the pain she was suffering was just too much and we have the comfort that the pain is gone and now she's free. As she told me when Lori passed "look for the butterflies; that means Lori's there with you.” So now when I see butterflies I will think of two people I miss so very much.

All my Love, your niece, Wendy

Some thoughts shared in memory of my sister Roslyn Mae Boxerman Woolf. Thank you for coming to celebrate the life of my sister Roz.

She was born at Victory Memorial Hospital in Waukegan Illinois on October 2, 1931 and was delivered by Dr. M.J Kaye who also delivered my brother Melvin on November 1, 1923 and also myself on October 21, 1921. My father Ben usually referred to Roz as our “depression baby” Melvin was 8 years older and I was 10 years older. As the car, driven by dad stopped in front of our house at 849 Wadsworth Ave. and greeted by Melvin, Milly, Arnie, and I, Dad assisted Mother carrying the baby into the house to the bedroom and placed the baby into her crib we were all excited and our family from then on increased to five.

First and foremost Roz was a people person as was the rest of our family and with the last name Boxerman she was a fighter and independent. At two years old visiting our grandparents in Peoria she opened grandpa Kalman’s garage door and all the chickens escaped and had to be returned. I wrote most of my themes about my sister and her antics during her early age, I must say I received some decent grades at her expense.

Roz had her tonsils out and was able to eat ice cream, the envy of her friends was a gift of quintuplets doll set and crib which were beautifully acquired and given by Aunt Bertha Goodman (Gail is probably the recipient of that treasure) Gail I hope you have a granddaughter or two to play with that lovely gift. My sister was a remarkable woman and teacher; she would introduce me to former pupils and parents on occasion. Having been to Roz’s classroom at Andrew Cook Magnet School only once, I can agree that she was an outstanding teacher by all the content and pictures on the walls. She loved her profession and all who visited were aware of the work that went into making it an interesting and colorful sight.

Roz had a generous and giving nature. She continued her dance lessons and went on a group dance tour one summer and entertained at many state fairs. They didn’t return until the 1st week of October. My parents and I drove to Chicago to pick her up and when she was crying my parents thought it was for them until she went to hug and kiss her friends goodbye because she knew she would never see them again, she then came over to mom and dad to hug and kiss them. Then she had to makeup a month of school work.

My sister was a caring a loving grandmother not only to her grandchildren but to mine, Aunt Feg’s and Aunt Ruth Mary’s. She always sent them books, puzzles and all types of educational materials. Roz always had a camera with her and took pictures of all the affairs; therefore we rarely got a picture of her. Therefore I have no recent pictures of her or her families.

My sister was extremely active in everyway and very fashionable. When she entered a room she was noticed by all and usually had a smile on her face. I can see her now in her aqua printed formal. Aqua was her favorite color. She was unforgettable like Nat King Cole’s song Unforgettable. When my sister came to visit me in New York as a teen she was carrying a book called Forever Amber, we had a wonderful two weeks together. After my working we had great dinners, and a good time at plays.

When my husband Stanley was ill and had to go to Mayo Clinic for surgery Kenneth stayed with Aunt Roz and Wendy stayed with Aunt Feg for at least two weeks. During Roz and my long distance calls we would discuss news, politics, etc. She would relay news of my former classmates and friends. Since we were both Libras we enjoyed many of the same events and I definitely feel we had ESP.

Roz was a wonderful mother and was Wendy and Ken’s second mother. When my husband passed away suddenly Roz and Feg were the first to console and assist me with all the details. Roz honored me by wearing my wedding dress. I was married on one of the coldest blizzard nights and she was married on one of the hottest June days at congregation AM ECHOD. Roz usually put finishing touches in mothers’ hair and makeup she had a knack for that and wanted her to look perfect.

Because of the demise of my sister it was difficult to prepare these thoughts shared. Toward the end of my sister’s life my granddaughter Lindsey and I were fortunate enough to discuss autism with one of Roz’s nurses, when the discussion took place Roz was completely lucid and didn’t seem in pain for those few moments. Lindsey and I were so happy with that time and discussion.

Roz, I’m sorry you had to go through so much pain and grief the last two months of your life. Due to our distance apart I regret that we didn’t get to spend more time together. The trip made my granddaughter Lindsey and me happy and proud to be with you. Lindsey enjoyed talking about education with you.

You were a wonderful sister and will always be in my prayers. We continue to treasure the times we laughed and shared quality time with family and friends we appreciate the blessing that god has provided us with our children.

Your Loving sister,
Miriam

Mic and Lauren,

I'm so sorry to hear of your mother's passing. These are the hardest experiences in life. May you know in your heart of the many wonderful times you shared. I'm sure she was VERY proud of you. Her spirit will follow you and comfort you forever.

Love, Victor

Dear Mic and Lauren,

My heart is with you - I know this is a hard time for your fmaily. When my Dad passed it helped me a great deal to remember all the good things we shared during our lifetime together rather than dwell on the very rough time he had towards the end. You carry your mom with you always and every time you think of her she is right there with you in sprit. To me, life and death are both pretty mysterious and all we can do is move forward with faith that everything is unfolding towards what is good - even when it doesn't feel that way at first.

Warm hugs and Love to you, Bobbie

You all seem to be dealing with more than most could bear. We're so sorry to hear about your Mom. Grieving sometimes feels like it never ends, but hopefully it helps keep the memories there so much that the sadness fades a little anyway.

We may not talk often enough - well, really we don't, but it doesn't reflect how much we think of you all.

Dear Mr. Woolf,

My deepest sympathy on the passing of your mother, Roslyn Boxerman Woolf. She was such a dear lady and she will be missed.

I had known her through our school days and recently we had met and talked on the phone, this was in July. She and your dad were in Door County and she told me what a grand time they had.

Everyone adored her. She was a champ. I was completely unaware of the seriousness of her illness. Your memories of all your years with her will be cherished.

My sincere condolences,

To the Woolf and Boxerman Families,

My name is Julie Valencic Weakley and I have been a friend of Roz for many years starting with 7th grade and through high school. The newspaper didn't mention that she was a member of our 1949 class reunion planning committee. Some of us girls on the committee would meet for lunch at the Country Squire on the first Wednesday of the month. I saw her there just a month before I learned she had leukemia.

Roz was a wonderful friend and person. She had a life full of accomplishments. Roz was loved and admired by many. She touched many lives and shall be tremendously missed. Gail Woolf and Jill Boxerman were friends of my daughter Susan Sylvia through high school. My husband, Don, and I knew Mel and Florence and Benjamin and Esther. We bought our wedding rings at Esther's jewelry store on 10th St. My grand niece Jaime Rukstales had Roz as her teacher at Cooke Magnet and thought the world of her.

Our deepest sympathies go out to all of the family. We are deeply saddened by Roz's passing on.

Sincerely,

Julie and Don Weakley

Dear David,

Ruthmary wrote me about the loss of your dear Roz. I am so deeply sorry.

It has been so many years ago, David, I doubt you can remember those days in Toledo when our parents were good friends. Ruthmary has been so very good about writing and keeping in touch. I know she is recouperating from illness, too.

My borther Burton has lived in Arlington since he graudtated form Harvard as a gift of the GI bill. He was ill this past two years ago, decided to come to Toledo, recouperated and then he fell, was back in the hospital and passed away a year ago. Sorry! to tell you this.

Please know I feel your pain. God bless you and keep you.

Sincerely,

Carrie and Neil Codell and Family

Dear David,

"Although there is little we can say at this time when sorrow has touched your heart, we want you to know our warmest thougths are with you now."

Our deepest sympathy to you and your children. I know the memory of all the years you and Roz had together will help you at this very difficult time. I remember when you were both here, and what fun it was to be together, even for such a short time.

Please know that we're thinking of you, David, and we send you our love and fondest memories.

Forgive me for being so late with our thoughts. Life becomes more difficult at my age. Our sincerest and good wishes from both of us.

With much love,

"Our Sympathy Goes Out to You -

No words of ours could ever fully express the heartfelt sympathy this brings to you today."

We were stunned when we read the article in the newspaper about Roz. We didn't realize she had been ill.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. You and Roz were such a loving couple so we know how hard it must be for you now.

Roz was such a wonderful lady and such a dear friend. We worked together so well at the Magnet School. We talked and planned lessons every day and often confided in each other. I admired Roz for her wealth of ideas. It was my privelege to work closely with her. She was always so cheerful. I have wonderful memories of her.

May God give you comfort and strength.

Lovingly,

Steve and Claudette Townsend

"Those Who Have Loved Sine On -

We look at the night sky in the quiet of darkness, and they are never far. Those we have loved and cherished, those who have changed our lives in some small or profound way are closer than we know, because it is their light that shines on our world. It is the brilliance of their souls that makes our night sky glow."

Dear David,

"May peace shine down upon you and bring you comfort."

We are thinking of you and your family at this difficult time. Keep your beautiful memories of your loved one close to your heart. We will always remember how many laughs we had at the garage sales, and how we enjoyed celebrating the new year with you and Roz. I will especially remember working with her at the library events. Our son, Ken, also sends his symapthy, as he remembers her as his 4th grade teacher at Hyde Park. She was always a caring, positive, happy person and we will miss her.

With symapthy and love,

David and Family,

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Roz's death. She taught both of my girls, and I knew her through AAUW as well.

The front of this card expresses my feelings better than I could, for she did touch so many lives in such a positive, exuberant, and graceful way.

David, you and Roz had very special marriage, so I know how hard it will be without her, but may your close-knit family and your music help you through this difficult time.

Her love remains with you always.

With tender thoughts,

Dear David,

Please know that Roz will never be forgotten. She was such a classy woman and she meant a lot to me.

Our trip to Europe in 1982 was so special and the fact that we met every year after that to enjoy each other's company was a testimony to how special the trip was for us.

She was so proud of all of her family and was such a lovely person. It's been my pleasure to know her.
