Allen Parker (Lennie) Arnold

Black Mountain, NC - Allen Parker (Lennie) Arnold died on Tuesday, February 5, 2013 in Black Mountain, North Carolina. He was 89 years old.

Born on June 25, 1923 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, he grew up in Kunming, China, where his father worked for the YMCA. He attended Shanghai American School and graduated from Mount Hermon School and Oberlin College.

Lennie met his wife Nancy at the Silver Bay YMCA Conference Center in New York. They were married there in 1948. He served in the Navy during the Korean War, and then earned his Masters and Ph.D. in chemistry from Case Institute of Technology. In 1984, they moved to Highland Farms Retirement Community in Black Mountain, North Carolina. They sang in the Asheville Symphony Chorus and the choir of Warren Wilson Presbyterian Church, volunteered at Lotts Creek Community School, and helped people with their taxes through the AARP.

After Nancy's death in 1992, Lennie married Betty Brandenberg Hoyt in 1994. He was warmly welcomed by her children and grandchildren. He and Betty traveled widely and maintained close ties with family and friends. Betty died in 2010.

Lennie will be remembered as a kind, cheerful, and energetic man, a singer, a storyteller, an encourager, and a man of deep faith. He will be greatly missed.

Please accept my condolences and respect during this time of loss. Lennie was certainly one of the most memorable, gentle-man it's ever been my pleasure to encounter. You, Daughters, seemed to have inherited his kind and supportive intelligence and his ability to radiate enthusiasm for life. It has been an honor to know you all, and be on the sidelines of Lennie's final journey. You have touched many lives and will be long, and fondly, remembered.
