John W. Kern, 68, of Hanover Twp., died at home Sunday morning, Dec. 10, 2017.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of Isabelle McLaughlin Kern of Larksville and the late Herbert J. Kern Sr., and was a graduate of West Hazleton High School.
John was employed as a mechanic by Jack Williams and Kost Tire, prior to retirement, and was an avid New York Yankees baseball fan.
He served his country proudly in the U.S. Marine Corps, with the rank of corporal, during the Vietnam War and was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnamese Service Medal with three stars and the Vietnamese Campaign Medal with device.
He was preceded in death, in addition to his father, by his wife, Nancy Jane Austra Kern, and brother, Herbert J. Kern Jr.
He is survived by his children, John Kern Jr., Stroudsburg; Cindy Kern, Nanticoke; David Kern, Wilkes-Barre; and Jaclyn Harrison, Wilkes-Barre; stepchildren, William Price, Wilkes-Barre; and Margaret Ann Young, Hanover Twp.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother, Joseph Kern, Larksville; sisters, Theresa Kern, Stroudsburg; and Yvonne Stone, Nanticoke; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday from Andrew Strish Funeral Home, 11 Wilson St., Larksville, with entombment with military honors in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Twp. The Rev. David Hossage, pastor of Bloomingdale Bible Church, will officiate.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday and from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service Wednesday.
