Karl Losey Obituary

Col (Ret) Karl L. Losey, 91, of Topeka, passed away on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at the Midland Hospice House. He was born on May 6, 1921 to Karl H. and Kathyrn Losey in Topeka. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1939 and Washburn University in 1949 with a B.A. degree in Business and a B.A. degree in Mathematics and Economics. During his school years, he played several sports including tennis, basketball, and football. He was a member of the Washburn University Alpha Delta fraternity as well as ROTC. Karl enlisted in the United States Army on July 16, 1942 and served overseas not only during World War II but also for two separate tours of duty during the Korean conflict. He served for three years during the occupation of Germany and for an additional three years in Puerto Rico as an advisor to the National Guard at El Morro Castle. On July 31, 1969, he retired from the military after more than 27 years of faithful service. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Award, the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was married to Julia E. Tanquary on July 25, 1945 in Topeka. They loved to play golf together and to follow their favorite teams: the Jayhawks and the NY Yankees. She traveled with Karl as he went to his various duty stations including Germany, France, Italy, and Bavaria. They were married for over 62 years; she preceded him in death on January 7, 2008. Upon his retirement, he worked for the State of Kansas as a research analyst for the Department of Labor. He was a member of the Golden Rule Lodge 90 A.F. & A.M., Arab Shriners, Retired Military Officers, lifetime member of the DAV, and a member of the Shawnee Country Club. He is survived by one son, Karl E. Losey of Auburn; four daughters, Victoria Nelson, Kris Seeley, Kim Ketterman, and Karen (Tom) Travis, all of Topeka; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Julia E. Losey, by his parents and by one daughter, Kathryn Losey. Funeral ceremonies will be at 1 p.m., Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Topeka with full military honors. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 3, 2021 SW Moundview, Topeka, KS 66604.
