George helped pick me as the last Mayberry sheriff in the CBS pilot for "Goober" which didn't make it to series. The name was later changed, alas, to "Goober and the Girls" in, my view, a misguided decision to be like "Three's Company" which lost some of the innocence of Mayberry.
Nobody was every nicer or more fun to work with. They decided to shoot using an untested single camera steadicam that didn't work. First shot was supposed to be at 8 and didn't happen until 11 p.m. with live audience waiting. George was patient, kept visiting us in the green room to keep our spirits up and us laughing. After it didn't sell (and WKRP did) when my father passed through Hollywood George got the producer to invite us to his house so Dad could see the tape. What a great human being he was, a man who devoted his life to making everybody happier.
