During my high school years I remember the great Yankee teams and Clete was such an important member. I especially recall his tremendous defensive plays in the World Series. That team was one of the greatest, most potent of all times - great memories for all.

Had I known that this site was available, I would have posted something sooner.
I live in Shell Knob, Missouri, 15 miles from Cassville, where records indicate that he was born. I grew up in Wichita, Kansas and would get my parents to take me to old Municipal Stadium in Kansas City to watch the Yankees play. The first major league game I saw was a double-header between the Yankees and A's July 15, 1962. '62 was Clete's best year at the plate but I always was fond of his fielding. In that game, he dove headlong to his right, gloved a hot smash, got up and threw the runner out. He always played even with the bag and dared the batter to hit it past him.
Unfortunately, he was in the same league at the same time Brooks Robinson was in Baltimore and Brooks always got the gold gloves. I was sad he got traded to Atlanta but he finally got his gold glove!

Happy Birthday Clete (02/12/13)! I often wonder how the kids, M, J and B are doing since it's been several years I last saw them. God-willing, I'll be back next year to wish you another Happy Birthday.
