We heard the sad news just today. Your family has our deepest condolences. Doug's presence in our neighborhood preceded our move to Ohio, and he made the homes around (and occasionally also) ours beautiful by his attention and care. More than that, "Mr. Doug" was a kind and friendly presence to my husband and myself, and to our children as they grew from babies to young ladies. He never had an unkind word to or about anyone to us, helped us demonstrate kindness and generosity to our children when he cared for a less fortunate neighbor's home, and never failed to ask about the kids, puppy grown to dog on his watch, and extended family with caring and concern. His cheerful, hardworking and larger-than-life weekly presence on our block is keenly missed, and we are so sorry for your deepest loss.

We just don't know what to say. We thought the world of Doug. His work was indeed exemplary, but he was a kind and thoughtful human as well. We often got into long chats about family during his visits to my yard, and he often did more than I asked. May his memory be a blessing and a comfort to his family.
