Arthur Robbins Obituary

MANCHESTER – Judge Arthur E. Robbins, 76, died on October 4, 2018.
He was born in Cambridge, Mass., on August 14, 1942 the son of Arthur E. and Alice (Costello) Robbins.
He served as a judge for the District Court seated in Concord for the State of N.H. for over 25 years.
Judge Robbins loved his retirement home in Sutton and thoroughly enjoyed everything about the area. He liked to hike and bike with his friends and especially with his daughters.
He loved the outdoors and was active in the town but his first love was the Town of Bow where he coached soccer, softball, mentored and taught many of the school children there.
He is survived by his wife, Carlotta (Nardi) Robbins of Manchester, NH; three daughters, Kathleen Robbins of Los Angeles, Calif., Alice Robbins of Concord, N.H., Carlotta P. Robbins and her husband Jim Conroy of Waterbury Center, Vt.; a son, Steven Quinones of Bedford, N.H., and Arthur's dear friend Carole O'Connell of Naples, Fla.

Judge Robbins was a mentor to me and so many other judges and attorneys. His wit, common sense, brevity, acumen, compassion and sense of fairness were his hallmarks. He made it possible for me to succeed him as the Justice of the Concord District Court. Together I think that we served the people of the Concord area with distinction for four decades. His mentorship and sound advice made that possible. Thank you for your great service my friend.

On-line memories of Art Robbins come from people who knew Art as an exceptionally humane, hard-working, witty judge on NH's District Court in Concord.
In the Sutton area most of us knew him as an exceptionally humane, witty and probably too skinny SRKG hiker, biker, and character actor at Sutton's Old Home Day. After over 25 years on the daily judicial bench trying to help people who had a hard time helping themselves, Art deeply appreciated the trails and woods and charms of semi-rural New Hampshire not distant from his daughters in Manchester and Vermont.
He especially loved King Hill in North Sutton for its accessibility, its cellar holes and old quarry gently hinting of hard-working folk not too consumed with urban envies and ambitions. He led a few well-attended SRK Greenway hikes on King Hill and let people discover the mix of woods and history for themselves.
In summer, his on-site cemetery re-enactments of Sutton's civil war veterans revealed Art as a time-traveler who could inhabit lost souls. Art was a very special man perfectly suited to New Hampshire's personal touch.

As a brand new public defender starting in 1999 I had hundreds of cases in front of Judge Robbins over several years. I remember him most for his incredible wit. After a long, tough day, my colleagues and I would unwind, often trying to accurately recount all the hilarious things Judge Robbins had said. He had a computer-like ability to get to the heart of a case, and know the right thing to do, with lightning speed. We all learned so much from him. I always figured I would bump into him again and some point. Now I wish I had made a greater effort to do so .... may he rest in peace.

I had the privilege of working with Judge Robbins and know I am a better person for that experience. No judge ever worked harder and no judge was ever more beloved by his staff. The volume of work he shouldered on a daily basis was amazing in itself, but we can't let it overshadow our memory of his intellect or his empathy either.

We all have people in our lives who are our gold standard for one reason or another. I cannot think judge without also thinking Judge Robbins. The title and the name are forever linked because he represented everything a judge should be. Beyond that, in a world that more and more often seems to lack decency, he was a good man, pure and simple. He was humble and kind. I hope that in the years since I last saw him he experienced the happy, quiet retirement he so deserved.

He will be missed by many. May we all find some comfort in remembering a time when he made us laugh because he was so very good at that. His sense of humor and way with words was second to none.

I offer his family and friends my sincere sympathy at this sad time.

During my law enforcement career with first the Concord Police Department and then the New Hampshire State Police, Judge Robbins was the one Justice who stood out with respect to compassion, fairness, and love of jurisprudence. I will never forget personal discussions I had with this epitome of what a judge should be.

Thank you for everything, Your Honor.

Arthur was an example of what a judge should be: someone who listens, who cares, and sought justice for both sides, always polite and with a sense of humor. It was an honor to have known him and looked upon him as a friend.

To the family of Judge Robbins, please accept my heartfelt condolences on your loss. I had the pleasure and honor to appear before Judge Robbins at Concord District Court. Judge Robbins was fair but tough; you better have all your facts and evidence in order if you had any hope for a conviction. One of the finest Judges in NH, Judge Robbins will be sorely missed.

Sorry to hear of Judge Robbins' passing. I worked with him for years when I was a member of the Concord Police Dept. including waking him in the middle of the night at his home to have many warrants signed. He was kind and caring and a credit to his profession. He was an outstanding jurist and it was my pleasure to have known him. Rest In Peace Your Honor.

I sincerely miss the days when I saw Art in court or officiating a youth soccer game. Always fair, kind and thoughtful a very decent man. We last saw each other on a hiking trail in the white mountains perfect spot for a quick visit.

I loved Judge Robbins! I worked with him at CDC for over 10 years, from 1981 until 1991. He was my mentor and most of all friend. He was always fair with his decisions and kind and honest. May the angels wrap their wings around this wonderful man. My condolences to his wife Carlotta and to his children.

To Carlotta and the Robbins family;
I am sorry to learn of the passing of Judge Robbins. I worked with him from the time that he began his career in Concord. I brought many cases before him...some I won. and some that I lost, but I knew that I would always get a full and fair hearing. He was a no nonsense arbiter, but always rendered his decisions firmly based on the facts supported by case law. I would often run into him on some mountain trail, and he sometimes leant a hand in a carryout of some accident victim. Troopers prosecuted their own cases in the District Court in those days, and we were all better for our experiences in his court room. He will be missed.

Carlotta and his family. I was lucky enough to work for Judge Robbins from 1981 to 1983. He was a very kind and caring man, with a very difficult job. He made coming to work enjoyable. You are in my thoughts and take comfort in knowing that now you have a special guardian angel to watch over you.

I had the enormous honor of serving on the district court with Arthur from 1985 until his retirement. His dedication to justice and plain talking, common sense were hallmarks of his and gifts that he gave to those with whom he worked. To know Art was to know someone for whom the work of judging was just a part of what he did and did not, in any way, define who he was. His love of family was always a significant part of his conversation and life. He loved talking to people, laughing and making others feel comfortable in his presence. We in the Judicial Branch and the Concord community owe him our deep gratitude for his work. I offer my sincere thoughts of sympathy to his family.

I knew Judge Robbins professionally many years ago when I was a young lawyer and he was sitting in the Concord District Court. He was always thoughtful, respectful and fair. I held him in high regard and remember him clearly after all these years. He was a tribute to the legal profession and New Hampshire. My condolences to the family on the loss of a good man.

You taught me so many lessons that I use every day. An honest, compassionate and incredibly wise soul. You could see right through all the garbage, get to the heart of the issue and solve things in a personal meaningful manner. I loved that our birthdays were 7 days apart and though I teased you about it, I loved you and the bailiffs stealing my lunches. You touched so many lives in such deep meaningful ways. Your spirit will continue with all of us and we will smile brightly as we carry on your memory. My deepest sympathy to your family. ........much love & respect, Tiger
