Back in 1957, as a young, newly-ordained priest of the Boston Archdiocese, then-Father D'Arcy served for a time as assistant priest at St Elizabeth of Hungary Chapel & Holy Trinity Schools in Roxbury, MA. During those first couple years, it was my honor and privilege to be acolyte at his Masses.

With the souls of the righteous, give rest, O Lord, to the soul of Your servant, the Bishop John, in a place of light, a place of green pastures, a place of repose, where there is neither sorrow nor sighing, but only life everlasting. Forgive him all his sins of word or deed, for You are all merciful and love mankind, and unto to You are due all glory, honor, and worship, together with your Father and Your all-Holy, Good and Life-giving Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages.

May his memory be eternal!

To Sr. Ann, Joan, and all the D'Arcy Family: you are in my thoughts and prayers at this time of the loss of your most loved brother, uncle, and friend. I share in your loss of my special friend and mentor. I cherish the priviledge of having worked with Bishop for eight years and benefitting from his wisdom, example, courage, and love for the people of the diocese. When my mother passed away he invited my sister and I to his home where he said Mass for my mother. I have the rosary he gave me at that time, blessed by Pope John Paul II. He is resting in peace with the God he served so faithfully and selflessly.

In late winter of 2011 my husband was receiving radiation treatment at the same time as Father. I would say "Hello" to him as he left each day. One afternoon he came over to me and asked if he knew me. I said that I wasn't Catholic, but that I felt that I knew him because I has seen him on tv so many times when my husband and I had lived in South Bend. He mentioned his love for "his lady". He asked if I was a patient and I responded that my husband was. He said that he would include my husband in his prayers. Father is my example of a Godly person. He offered a prayer for someone who was needing it, even though he was not a member of his branch of Christianity. Thank you again Father, and rest in peace. Elaine Beeching

To Bishop D'Arcy's family,
This man showed me, by example, his faith in God. His hierarchal status never stood in the way of his accessibility. His console and words of hope and encouragement will follow me to my grave. Thank you, Bishop D'Arcy, for being such a good shepard with your flock.

My deepest sympathies to the D'Arcy family. I had the pleasure of meeting Bishop D'Arcy a few years ago when I brought my mother to a mass he was saying on the North Shore in MA. My mother and uncles grew up with John in Brighton so my mother (Anne Pitts) was thrilled to see him again. God Bless his soul and may his family find comfort during these difficult days ahead.

Bishop D'Arcy's many attributes have been a part of my family since the early day's of our Brighton years. His Father's grocery store up from my Grandfather's grocery store-Stewart's Market, across the street from my Father's dental office and the corner across from Henzler's Spa.-- Winter "coasting" on Upcrest Rd. What fond memories ! John (a little my senior)always seemed to be around and his great worth of character has been in my thoughts and heart throughout the years. His Spiritual and kind words in a letter to my Dad when Mother died meant so much and still holds a place in the family archives.May all who have been fortunate to be part of John's life follow in his steps and be grateful and blessed to be a part of the wonderful life he gave to us.
May John's Spirit and the Love of God be with us now and forever.

Bless You and Rest in Peace !

i did not know this man but he is indeed a saint.

What a loving Bishop. This a loss for America but a gain for the Church for he is praying without ceasing in the Presence of Our God and Savior.
I am thankful for Bishop D'Arcy's life, his love, and his presence at our grandchildren's reception of the sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation. I was privileged to be able to go to confession to him a year ago. Blessings to all his family and friends.

Rest in Peace

Joan and Family,
Sorry to hear of your brother John's passing. He is now in Heaven. I hope time and good memories will help ease your sorrow.
February 04, 2013
Bishop D'Arcy was a young priest at St. Mary's, the church I attended as a child in Beverly, Massachusetts in the late 1950's and early 1960's. He was such a faith-filled, kind man who was loved by all of the parishioners. May he rest in God's peace.

Rest in peace along the side of God until we meet again you will be missed dearly here on earth. Sylvia.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

We lived in the FW-SB diocese for 25 years, he was the bishop for 24 of them. A tremendous leader who would not back down from anyone. He raised fifty million dollars to undergird Catholic schools teachers' pay and initiated an endowment for the diocesan high schools. Think I know where he is now.
February 04, 2013
Thank you for being a shining light in our community and our diocese over the years. The Lord has one of the greatest shepherds ever coming home to be by his side. I am sure heavens are in jubilation at your arrival. God Speed Bishop D'Arcy. Thanks for everything.
