I was a student of Dr. Fussell in 1993. No mentor ever made such an imprint upon me. Dr. Fussell combined an abundance of wit and humor with intellectual rigor and fundamental decency. He leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire and enlighten readers for years to come.
Thank you for puncturing the romanticizing of war because you knew from your experience that it wasn't . Feeling fortunate to have survived, you had little patience for those who dribbled away the gift of life in silliness.
Your work will be remembered.
Sadly, I did not know of Mr. Fussell or his writings; however, it is now my intention to read his books. He has left a very worthwhile legacy, and I find myself feeling very sad at his passing. Sincere condolences to his family.
