Bob Johnston Family, June 29, 2014

I was saddened to learn of Bob's passing.

Bob had a great deal of positive influence on my professional life. He hired me for my first job in 1966 as a Information Technician at the Bakersfield Exploration Office. I had just been discharged after serving 3 years in the Navy.

In the Technical Services and Computer Section, we were a small group of young men (most of us from Taft, CA) doing a brand new job – reading and recording engineering and geologic information from oil well histories that was input into a “big” computer in San Francisco.

Many of us were attending Bakersfield College. Bob gave us “flexible” hours so that we could do his work and attend college at the same time – very progressive business practice at the time. I left Bakersfield in 1968 to finish college in southern California.

In 1971 when Standard Oil consolidated the West Coast Exploration and Production groups in San Francisco I started working for Bob again – he sent me to my first computer programming class. What a gift!

This training started me on a wonderful career in Information Technology. Looking back, Bob put me on the ground floor of whole new profession.

Although it has been many years since I last saw Bob, I only have fond memories of a man who had such positive and lasting influence on my early professional life.

Please accept my most profound sympathy for your loss.
