Roger Lee Paulun
NEWCOMERSTOWN: Roger Lee Paulun, age 67, of Newcomerstown, died early Thursday morning, July 4, 2013, in Union Hospital, following a brief battle with Lymphoma.
Born at Newcomerstown, April 4, 1946, he was a son of the late William C. and Lillie Florence Wilson Paulun.
Best known as "Peachy" to his classmates, Roger was a 1964 graduate of Newcomerstown High School. Following graduation, he joined the United States Army serving state-side during the Vietnam War. Upon his honorable discharge from Army service in 1968, he went to work with General Electric at Coshocton, retiring in 2001 following a career that spanned more than three decades. Roger also volunteered for many years as an Emergency Medical Technician with Tri-County Ambulance. Never one to sit around and let the grass grow under his feet, Roger, took on a part-time job with Sheetz in New Philadelphia, working there for most of the past 8 years.
At home, Roger will be remembered as a sports fanatic. He followed collegiate athletics, especially The Ohio State Buckeyes. He and his family traveled extensively, and many of those trips were to follow the Cleveland Indians around the division to tour other cities and ballparks.
He loved and adored his grandsons. Spending time with and spoiling them was always "tops" in his book. In a quiet moment, he could be counted upon for enjoying a good crossword or jigsaw puzzle.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 20 years, the former Martha Coulter Hopkins, whom he wed October 9, 1993. Together their blended family includes daughters Heidi Morris of Newcomerstown, Victoria (David) Cannon of Gnadenhutten, a son Scott Paulun of Coshocton, and" almost-daughter" Theresa (Joe) Marstrell of Fort Benning, GA. He'll be sadly missed by his three grandsons Joshua McCune and Ayden Baker both of Newcomerstown and Nathaniel Swanger of Gnadenhutten; and his mother-in-law, Donnas Coulter of New Philadelphia; four brothers, Carl (Grace) Paulun of New Philadelphia, Gary (Jeanetta) Paulun of Newcomerstown, Dave (Sandy) Paulun of Port Washington, and Dan (Linda) Paulun of West Lafayette; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Carol (Mike) Stephens of Midvale, Larry (Dianne) Coulter of Dover, Jerry (Cindy) Coulter of Cedar Falls, IA, and Linda (Don) Davis of Cuyahoga Falls, also survive; a special nephew, Bill Jefferies, and many nieces and nephews, complete the family.
In addition to his parents, Roger is preceded in death by his sister, Marjorie Jefferies, and a brother, Lester Paulun.
Friends are invited to call Monday from 6-8 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Cremation is planned and the family will gather for a private funeral service lead by Pastor Brian Flood.
In lieu of memorial contributions, the family suggests that you take your children or grandchildren out for a special day - just like Roger liked to do with his own family.
Those unable to attend are invited to share memories and condolences with the family by visiting Roger's permanent memorial on the funeral home's website: www.geibcares.com
