Nancy M. Grammer, 68, of Evansville passed away at 4:33 pm, Thursday, January 29, 2015 at Deaconess Gateway Hospital.
Nancy was born February 5, 1946 in Evansville. She was a 1964 graduate of Reitz High School, attended Indiana University and received her Bachelors and Masters in Education from University of Evansville. Nancy started her career in education at Boonville Junior High School and later at Evansville Christian School. She was at Ivy Tech for 22 years and served most of that time as a Chair of English and Communications. Nancy had been awarded Teacher of the Year several times and was loved by her students just as much as she loved them. Nancy and her husband Ed treasured the time they spent at their home in New Mexico. She was a loving wife, mother, sister and grandmother who will be greatly missed by her family, students and many friends.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 47 years, Ed Grammer of Evansville, son, Andrew Grammer of Evansville, brother, Gary Moore (Elaine) of Evansville and granddaughter, Reagan Fleming of Louisville, KY.
She was preceded in death by her step-father and mother, Herman and Margaret (Addington) Scheneman and infant son, Alex Grammer in 1973.
Funeral Services will be held at 10 am, Monday, February 2, 2015 at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel-A Family Tradition Funeral Home - 5330 Washington Avenue, Evansville with Reverend Ferd Elfreich officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Evansville.
Friends may call from 2 pm until 8 pm, Sunday, February 1, 2015 at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel-A Family Tradition Funeral Home and again from 9 am until time of service at 10 am, Tuesday.

Several days ago, I thought left this message on this site, but cannot find it. Perhaps I was too upset. This poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson describes Nancy in many ways:

To laugh often and much;
to win the respect of the intelligent people
and the affection of children;
to earn the appreciation of honest critics
to appreciate beauty;
to find the best in others;
to leave the world a bit better
whether by a healthy child,
a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition;
to know that one life has breathed easier
because you lived here.
This is to have succeeded.

By all counts, Nancy succeeded as she brightened our lives. I cannot describe how much I will miss her. What a wonderful friend!

Please accept my heartfelt sympathies to all of Nancy's family as you now move through your grief together.
Although I teach as an adjunct for another department at Ivy Tech, I was very privileged to get to know Nancy when we served on the Faculty Council together. What a joy she was (even in meetings) and I am so blessed that our pathways intersected. I shall forever remember her kindness, care, compassion, positive attitude, and insightful wisdom shared.

Ed and Andy, it's so hard to put into words what Nancy means to me. She was so easy to work with and gave me the freedom to develop as an instructor. But she was so much more than my "boss." She was a dear friend, mentor, and confidante. We shared so many joys and successes but also tears, frustrations, and losses. No matter what was going on in my life, I could always share it with Nancy and feel so much better afterwards. The hallway in our office is so quiet and empty without her laughter. And my life is so much emptier without her presence. But my life is forever enriched for having known her. She will be deeply missed, but her legacy will continue in the hearts of all the lives she touched.

I was a student of Mrs Grammer at Boonville Jr High. She was a wonderful teacher. She brought a sense of calm and encouragement to class creating an ideal learning environment.
