For God is not unrighteous so as to forget your work and the love you showed for his name by ministering and continuing to minister to the holy ones (Hebrews 6:10). Dawn will never be forgotten for all the work she did for her community and especially those sweat little ones in her care. May God continue to strengthen your family in these times hard to deal with, especially without a beloved one such as Dawn.
December 14, 2013
May god continue to bless Dawn and her family. Its hard to believe that a year has passed since that tragic day. I have thought of the Hochsprung family often. I know a family could not be prouder of a family member with such strong compassion for children I know it must have been a pleasure to know her.
January 26, 2013
Dear Family of Dawn,
It has been nearly two months since your tragic loss. How are you doing? My prayer is that you continue to heal; let yourself grief by talking to family and friends. Talking about your feelings to a “true companion” who will listen pathetically can bring a relief. (Proverbs 17:17) Writing your feelings or your memories of dear Dawn can be soothing to the soul. We all grieve differently – at our on pace and in our own way. May you continue to find comfort from those with kindred spirit as we await God's wonderful promises for tomorrow!

You are a power of example to all who knew and loved you. Your dynamic energy and genuine love of children and education will always be remembered. Dawn, you lived your life to the absolute fullest and always put children first right up until your tragic death. May you rest in peace surrounded by the angels you tried so hard to protect.

Dawn sounds like a wonderful lady. May the joyous memories you have of her remain with you always. Please take comfort in the fact that God does not cause evil things to happen. (James 1:13, Job 34:10-12) Instead, he offers the permanent solution to this tragedy and to any that befall us. (Isa. 33:2) Through prayer to him may you find the answers you need to bring you peace.
December 22, 2012
Your bravery, dedication, and sacrifice have touched me profoundly. May God bless your family and keep them close to Him in their sorrow.

The sky is filled with Angels
With puffy lacy wings
The remnants of God's beauty
With treasures they now bring

Each one of them a Guardian
That travels in the sky
To watch throughout eternity
Their parents from on high

Smiles that come from Angels
They fall like crystal rain
Eases earthly burdens
Lifting all life's pain

Halos so astounding
That glitter gold each day
Following their loved ones
In such a perfect way

Wings in gentle breezes
That fall from up above
Kissing every parent
With everlasting love

Angels soar through heaven
With everlasting light
Looking down from heaven
Saying their "goodnights"

Kissing all who loved them
So gently on the face
This life's tender mercy
Each parent can embrace

Wings and shiny halos
Travel from on high
Surrounding all their loved ones
They never say good-bye.

Dear George,
I've tried to contact you by phone but was unsuccessful. I don't know if you remember me - my name is Robert Cross, and we were lab partners in Comparative Anatomy at the University of Toledo back in the early sixties. You would come over to my home on Blackstone Drive in Toledo to work on our cat. It was with great shock that I learned of the tragedy that you and your beautiful family have endured. Although its been a long time, I just wanted you to know that I've thought of you often over the years with fond memories, and that I and my entire family are keeping you and your family in our thoughts and prayers. If you would like, you can contact me at 919-383-5003 or rec.tox@nc.rr.com. May God bless you and your family.

To family and friends of Dawn,

Anguished Hearts Don't Despair

A parent's worst >> nightmare
became your reality this day.
Feelings of unimaginable >> despair;
so many unanswered questions …

Why my child?
Did God >> need another angel?
If so, how unloving it would be of him
to take >> our cherished one, our joy!

So many unfulfilled dreams,
plans for >> the future; tomorrows gone.
Lives changed forever by the loss
of one >> so dear, so tender, so young.

Death leaves such emptiness of >> heart,
regrets of not giving that last hug;
feeling the warmth and >> tenderness of a kiss;
saying: “I love you” just one more >> time!

Have hope! He has promised an end to such >> sadness.
He hears the prayers of the brokenhearted one.

Memories >> cherished and faith in a better future,
Will help one cope with the pain >> of today.
A promised paradise when all will be reunited
with dear, >> loved ones. Life without end at last!

December 19, 2012
Dawn was the principal in our school system prior to leaving for Newtown. When I think of her, I think of her bright smile and her commanding presence. She had the perfect balance needed in a principal - a take-charge attitude while managing to be approachable to students at the same time. She got things done with a smile on her face. What impressed me most was that she made school security the priority I have always believed is necessary. My middle daughter told me that one day Dawn went outside and confronted a "strange" man the kids all spotted on the playground with what they thought was a "weapon". He turned out to be a gardener holding a garden tool, but she didn't hesitate to investigate. When my daughter was in 5th grade, she had to do a makeup test outside the classroom. She sat alone in the hallway and got stuck on an equation. Dawn walked down the hallway, stopped & asked her if she needed help, she told her she was stuck. She said Dawn then sat right down in the hallway next to her, both of them with their backs to the wall, feet on the floor. She helped my daughter think through the problem. I never knew that story. It made all the difference to my child. My heart goes out to Mr. Hochsprung & all the children & grandchildren. She is what every parent wants in a school leader - she put the children first. She laid down her life trying to save them. She didn't hesitate. You are all in my thoughts & prayers as I can only imagine the heartache you are going through. May it give you some comfort knowing that she did not die in vain. She truly was a hero. She paid the ultimate sacrifice & the communities she served will never forget her bravery & determination. I wish you all peace & comfort & wonderful memories to hold forever.
December 19, 2012
Rest in Peace Dawn Hochsprung. While I didn't know you, I believe that your bravery in this life and your presence has inspired this country and our world. May your loving family be comforted during this difficult time.

Dear Hochsprung family, Dawn was my childhood friend and neighbor. I remember running across the backyard to play with her. We had so much fun with the dolls, trading "Raggedy Anns," and making sure we were next to each other during dance lesson! She absolutely got me through one recital-I was a crying mess! I remembe her being such a good friend of mine and Vicki's! What a wonderful person Dawn was. What a hero! I know that words cannot express our sorrow! God bless you all, a wonderful woman and friend!

And I said, "Here am I. Send me!"

Her death touched me among the most, because her love for, and dedication to, the students and staff under her care led her to apparently think immediately of them rather than herself despite the risk to her own life. That is courage beyond most people's comprehension. I hope that, through you sorrow and loss, that pride in her strength can help comfort you. God bless you with His grace and accept her soul with His love and mercy.

Words cannot even begin to express how much in shock I was to hear that someone that worked with my Daughter when she was in school had been taken away so senseless, shocked is the word I can say that I am still in. When Mrs. Hochsprung was my daughter's teacher she was a very straight forward individual, very caring, in the best interest of my daughter, many phone calls keeping me updated on how my daughter was doing or what she may not be doing. In the end we worked on it together. My heart goes out to her family, her husband, her children, grandchildren, step children and all the family and friends. May God give you the strength in your time of mourning, give you comfort...my thoughts and prayers go out to you all.........my deepest sympathy.

Poem of Life

Life is but a stopping place,
A pause in what's to be,
A resting place along the road,
to sweet eternity.
We all have different journeys,
Different paths along the way,
We all were meant to learn some things,
but never meant to stay...
Our destination is a place
Far greater than we know.
For some the journey's quicker,
For some the journey's slow.
And when the journey finally ends,
We'll claim a great reward,
And find an everlasting peace,
Together with the lord.

Dawn's brave and selfless act will not be forgotten. She truly showed by her actions that her first concern was for the safety of her children. I know that if she could have stopped him herself she would have. The God of heavens will not forget her works. When she awakens she will not have to worry about the badness that exists in this world today. May you have peace and know that better times are ahead of us. It is God's promise.

George, I remember Dawn when I worked at the Park, and she was always a bright light for the students and the teachers. I am so sorry for your loss.
December 17, 2012
I was shocked and stunned to hear of this. I only knew Dawn as a Temporary Professional Employee, and found her to be a remarkable woman. My first day, she invited me in for tea & a talk about life and career issues. When I left, she was worried about where my next career trapeze would be, and sincerely cared. She wanted all to become directly involved with the children on the playground to foster sincere relatonships with kids. Dawn was a remarkable, smart, sharp, and caring educator, and a kind human being. She had the courage of her convictions, and died a heroine. I am sure she has been received in heaven as a Saint. Look for energetic signs- feathers, birds sent by angels, lights.
A great book to read is "90 Minutes In Heaven" by Rev.Don Piper- once on the NY Times bestseller list. Our hearts all break for and with you. You should be proud of her incredible, remarkable heroism..She was a courageous woman. Prayers and Heartfelt Sympathy to the Family & Friends of Dawn. I am glad I knew her.

Footprints in the Sand

One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord.
Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.
In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand.
Sometimes there were two sets of footprints,
other times there were one set of footprints.

This bothered me because I noticed
that during the low periods of my life,
when I was suffering from
anguish, sorrow or defeat,
I could see only one set of footprints.

So I said to the Lord,
"You promised me Lord,
that if I followed you,
you would walk with me always.
But I have noticed that during
the most trying periods of my life
there have only been one
set of footprints in the sand.
Why, when I needed you most,
you have not been there for me?"

The Lord replied,
"The times when you have
seen only one set of footprints,
is when I carried you."

December 16, 2012
I thought I heard children laughing,
in the pre-dawn light of day,
I slowly turned over and rubbed my eyes,
to clear the fading night away.
As I opened my eyes still blinking,
I saw a small child with a glow about her head,
smiling brightly as she turned and looked at me,
she was standing by the foot of my bed.
She said in a soft voice that they are all together,
and that they rose in the air on that day,
that they are with their favorite teachers,
And that they had something important to say.
She said that all the children wanted their mommies and daddies to know,
that they will be together again some day,
not to lose hope, and not to cry, that they wouldn't want it that way.
And then I saw in the shadows tall figures,
and one called her gently by name,
the figure told her that it was time to go,
and they both slowly turned away.
That's when I saw the wings on their backs, and my tears began to flow,
I rubbed my eyes, and saw them together holding hands,
and into the air they rose.
And as the sound of children's laughter began to fade away,
I turned over and blinked in the pre-dawn light, the light of a brand new day.
May God hold you tight and give you peace. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends during this very sad and difficult time.

Dawn was one of my most favorite girlhood friends. She was bright, sparkly, and full of FUN, always. We had such fun paying dress-up in the York House Inn. We played for hours with plastic farm animals and fences-Lord knows why but we bought them at Newberry's and we thought we had discovered the secret to the happiest life- buying our own toys! Oh Dawn, you were and are a light in this inexplicably dark world. Peace...

When I first heard news of Ms. Lafferty, my heart sank. It is a terrible loss to the community. Nothing could ever measure the amount of hurt being felt after the tragic events of December 14th. I was lucky enough to know Ms. Lafferty since being a student of hers in middle school and engaging in close relations with her. It does not suprise or shock me at all to know that as soon as she heard the gunshots and knew her children were in danger, the first thing she did was jump up and run out to fight for their protection. That is who she was. She always had a love for the children who she got to work with. She loved, LOVED her job. Her smile could light up your day and she was always interested to hear your opinion and what you had to say. Every kid counted. And although I have not had contact with her in more recent years, I know in my heart that God, or whatever power, put her in that school for a reason. She was their guardian and she would of had it no other way than to die protecting her kids. I am greatly saddened by her death, the deaths of faculty members and of course the 20 little angels that were brought back to heaven. I know that she was guiding them and helping them be okay. She will be greatly missed. I am thankful that I am lucky enough to say that this hero was a part of my life. Love and Sympathy to her family and especially Mr.Hochsprung. Rest in Peace Ms.Lafferty Hochsprung, you may be gone but I promise you, you will never be forgotten.

Having been a school administrator like your Dawn, my heart has been torn out."No greater love have thou, than to give your life for a friend!" She gave it for her students. It hurts so much when you lose a student through natural causes, so I can only imagine what it is to lose those young innocent children eagerly learning in their classroom. The courage expressed by all teachers and staff is also a tribute to Dawn and her leadership. I am sure she will be guiding those children in heaven.
December 16, 2012
Rest in peace. Please know that even though your life ended so unexpected, you will forever live on to the world as a true hero. You gave up your own life to protect those of innocent children. December 16, 2012
you are all too young to have been taken away

those you left behind will have to stay

and think of the day you had to die

and become angels in the sky.

never a first kiss, a graduation or marriage you will share

it is all useless and is so unfair!

the horrific tragedy touched the hearts of those far and near

so many strangers had shed many tears

for the lives of children and adults were selfishly taken away

on what was supposed to be a typical day.

Heros were born that very sad day

some managed to live, while others were taken away

no matter where we where at the time

it will forever be a memory in our mind

a piece of heart was destroyed for each and every family

but somehow taught us to love freely and gratefully

there are many extra angels watching over us now

saying it's ok to move foward somehow

December 15, 2012
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Ms. Hochsprung...thank you for jumping into action at the first indication of trouble.

I have always had a fragile relationship with God. The events of yesterday hasn't helped me on that front. Impossible to fathom. Impossible to reconcile.

Thank you for accompanying these young children on their untimely journey to a better world. These babies need not feel alone or frightened...their beloved Principal is right there, holding their small hands, continuing to provide comfort and guidance just as you did here on earth.

My thoughts and prayers to your family and friends.

I have been in education for over 30 years and have one daughter who is director of guidance and another who is a school speech therapist so school is a huge part of our lives--our students, very often the center of our focus, how can we help them more. I don't know how any of us would react in a situation like the one at SHES, but I hope it would be like Dawn who automatically thought of protecting students. Those of you who love her, please know that she is a hero to educators today and will be forever.
