Casey, Sr., John J.
John J. Casey, Sr., age 100, of Seymour, entered into rest on Sunday, April 27, 2014 in Vitas at St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury. He is the husband of Beverly Mallahan Casey. John was born in Shelton, on August 19, 1913, son of the late Frank and Stella (Novakowski) Czajkowski, and was a Shelton resident for most of his life before moving to Seymour in 1991. John was a proud veteran serving his country in the US Navy during WWII.
He started his career as a serviceman, at the former Derby Gas Company, where he was instrumental in forming the Union for his fellow employees. Derby Gas Company became CT Light and Power where he was employed until his retirement. After retirement, John was employed as hearse driver for over 25 years at the Riverview Funeral Home. He was a member and Past Commander of the American Legion Sutter-Terlizzi Post # 16 in Shelton, where he served as the Chaplain for many years. He was a also member of the former VFW Post # 1236, the Czech-Amer Club, the American-Russian Citizens Club, the Bass Club, the Elks Lodge # 571. He coached Boys Biddy Basketball in Derby for many years, he was a former lifeguard at the Recreation Camp of Derby, where he taught many kids to swim, and was a former member of the Shelton Parks and Recreation Commission. One of John's biggest accomplishments was marching in every Memorial Day Parade, until his age of 99, from 1946 to 2013, while wearing his original uniform. .
He is the father of Fred Casey and his wife Maureen, Ted Casey and his fiancee Kathy Shaw, and John Casey, Jr. and his wife Debbie. He also leaves 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 4 brothers, Thomas, Frank, Stanley, and Louis Czakowski, and 2 sisters Bertha Petronuik, and Frances Anroman.
Friends may greet his family on Wednesday from 5 to 7 PM in the Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Road, Shelton. A military honors service will be held Wednesday at 6:45 pm.
Burial will be private.

We will miss "Joe" very much. You kept him going and happy for so long. I remember the first time I saw him leaning the ladder on the flag pole in your front yard - he was 91 years old!!!! God bless him
