- Dear Sam, - Missing You, Tonite, dear Soul Brother! - Perfect Night for Poet-izing
Your smile could light a room.
A hug from you
Was to know you as a poet.
Your anger at injustice
Gave you away as a writer.
A silent tear in the midst of beauty
What an artist, Sam!
What we found in you was loving and lasting
Still, we wish that you were here.
I think of you often, Sam.
Days become months, months become years.
- If you were a Book, Sam Brakefield, I'd read you again and again! - You'd be my Favourite Book of Poems, in my Special Private Library, in my Fine Glass Hutch - the one made with Cherry Wood - A fine Vintage - next to my original Oxford Press Chaucer, fair condition, 1851. Long since destroyed, along with my manuscript - ah, but your Legend, your Legacy, lives on, Sam Brakefield - 'The Greatest Poet of them ALL!!' - You ARE!! - Being a REAL Poet is either something You're born to - or the Godz have thrust upon you. - But YOU, Sam Brakefield, were the Chosen One - the ONE that Townies, even to this Day, still talk about - even to this Day. We love You, Sam Brakefield - Every time I see a Prairie Young Man Saunter, with Coyote Glide and Fedora and GQ Farm Boy Grin, I am reminded: You are still with us, in our hearts, in the Belief of Poets and Vagabonds and Art, Beauty, Hope, n Truth - You speak it, Sam, through every Poetizer that slinks upon that Open Stage -T'was such Divine Pleasure to say: 'I knew U!'
So many hugs. Miss you Sammy.
Sam I am , how did I not know. How did I miss it. I adored you with all my heart, I missed you with more of it. Life changed and fastly passed by, and til today i had no idea I'd never see you again. Had I not disappeared I may have known you did. Missing your word salads and our many stairwell encounters. Xoxo to the moon and back a million times over
Ill always keep you close Sam i still love you with all my heart
You are on our minds and in our hearts, today and always.

Your light still shines
We sing your songs
We cry your tears
We remember you
Missing you today and always.
Just wanted to say, you still come up in conversation about once a week. Sometimes it's a funny story (unprintable here!), sometimes it's melancholy. But you are far from forgotten, brother. Missing you today.

I heard about Sam well after his passing, however it still hit me hard. Very rare to meet someone as sincere, funny, and original as Sam. He always was a breath of fresh air to be around...impossible not to laugh or smile in his presence; even at the most serious of times. If you were having a bad day and needed that relief, Sam was there.
The world is less vibrant with you in it Sam, but heaven will be that much better.
Sam, thinking of you today and wishing I could give you a hug. Love always, Sarah
Your smiles were waltzes, your laughter a polka
Your tango a serious tussle of mind and heart
You were in so close, then out so far
You understood suffering all too well
Sometimes a whisper, sometimes a yell
I hear you still
Happy late birthday Sam! Miss you! Had cake for ya. Thinking of you always.:*
Sam I Miss you bro, one of the coolest people I ever met.
There was a hidden genrosity and depth of kindness that Sam always brought to the forefront with his niece and nephew, Katrina nd Mikhail. He always took time to play with them and make them feel special. He would even play with ribbons and girls' toys with Katrina! Always loved to play hide and seek and tickle Mikhail. They always knew Uncle Sam was going to do something fun just for them. We are glad to have had that. Those little moments will always leave a lasting impression of the unique bond he created. I think the freedom that the kids brought out was very important to him.
I knew Sam from Living in LaCrosse. He was my friend, when few others would be. At my lowest, he would make me feel valid, loved, cared for. And I never told him that. Sometimes, I think regret is OK. But I sure do miss you right now, brother.
came across some pictures today..Thinking about sam..hope you are all well.
You are my sunshine
My only sunshine.
You make me happy
When skies are gray.
You'll never know, Sam,
How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.
Happy birthday sammy.. eat cake for me in heaven and ill eat some here for you. xo.
Sam, thinking of you...missing your kindness and love. Missing you on John St.
We're so sad. Miss you. Miss your poetry. Miss your style. Miss your humor. Miss your smile. Miss your warmth. Miss your dreams. Miss your hugs. I even miss your pain and struggles. Miss you, miss you, miss you. With all my heart. Every day.
I didn't know Sam for very long, but he was one of the nicest, kindest, gentlest souls I've ever met. I sometimes see someone who may look like him on the street and I wish it was him because I know if he saw me he would greet me with his great big smile and lovely conversation.
It's been a year. I miss seeing Sam on the few occassions our paths would cross but I will never forget his beautiful smile and his gentle kindness. His life was a precious gift to those of us who knew him.
"May you stay forever young." -Bob Dylan-
Thinking of you Sam...wish you were here.
Peace and Love,
I think about you almost every day Sam. Sometimes it's because I think of somethings silly we used to do together and sometimes I simply miss you. I love you my little Sammy.
ALL SAM'S STUFF IS GREAT. ANYTHING YOU CAN FIND, PLEASE SUBMIT. HE COULD DO AD-LIB, TOO, AND WELL, AND LIKE ANY TRUE ART FORM, WAS CONSTANTLY LIQUID. MOVEABLE, ANIMATED, IT HAD ELECTRICITY TO IT. THANKS, JULES

He was love and kindness rolled into a gregarious smile... I loved him deeply. My deepest prayers for your family...love to sam...Please let me know what i can do.. if anything...Heatherheals@Hotmail.com..
I was a friend of Sam's when he lived in La Crosse. Please accept my sympathies to you and your family. I am so sorry. I hadn't been in much contact with Sam since he moved back to Illinois but just an email here and there to say "hey." I was just going to try to connect with him again this morning when I came across the news. I know words can't make the pain go away but I wish there was something comforting for me to say. I always enjoyed his company and obviously he was a very memorable soul and I would wonder about him from time to time and what he was up to with his poetry/art and hope that he was doing well. I am unsure of what happened but I do know and understand how greatly he is missed. I always thought we would meet again and laugh a lot . . . I hope my sending this hasn't brought on sadness for you. I just wanted to express how sorry I am for your loss but also that I feel very lucky to have had the chance to know Sam and blessed for the memories given. I will not forget him and that wonderful laugh of his. Take good care, mary
We were deeply saddened to hear of your loss. Our hearts go out to you, Ron and your family during this difficult time. Please know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

Hello, my dear, sweet Sam,
Enough of this now. It's time to call home. I need to hear your voice.
THINKING OF YOU, DEAR SAM. MISS YU, BUDDY. ~JULES
I will miss you sweet Sam.
Peace and Love,
All of my memories of Sam, always recall one thing.. HIS HILARIOUS SMILE.. Ever since he was a little kid, his face always lit up in that dopey grin.. whether from a joke, something on tv, or from my 90 year old grandma cussing up a storm in foreign languages. He found delight in simple things. A lesson all of us serious workaholics can learn from him. :). I know he is in a good place now, probably cussing it with his 99 year old grandma.. I'm sure she's showing him the ropes and they are causing all sorts of heavenly, delightful trouble..grinning down at us mere mortals.
My prayers are with you. It is not easy losing a child or almost losing one as I almost lost Nick. I remember Sam as a friend of my son and he had a very engaging smile. He will not be forgotten.
Christi and familiy,
I am so sorry that Sam passed on. I hope you find strength and comfort in each other, and friends. I care so much about you and your family and I will be here for you. I wish I was able to say goodbye to Sam. I looked at your pictures you posted and I noticed what a handsome man Sam is. May all your fond memories of Sam flood you with his love.
Dear Chris, Ron and Sarah
I'm deeply saddened on hearing of Sam's passing. My heart goes out to you in sincere sympathy and prayers for God's comfort to you in your sorrow. Peace and love, Rosemary Polnow (former secretary at CSS)
Sam called home often, and I would save his voice on our recorder for as long as I possibly could. The audio included below is from fall of 2008 at the time Sam arrived at Taos, New Mexico. Sam loved travel, beauty and wide open spaces. I think you'll hear it in his voice. I hope you enjoy listening, and thanks for being part of Sam's dear, sweet, precious life.
For all of those who have shared or plan to share your personal stories and insights about the Sam we loved, Christi, Ron and Sarah wish to thank you for making a permanant record of loving and enduring memories of Sam.
Ron, Chris and Sarah - I am so sorry for your tragic loss. May God's love comfort you during this difficult time. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
I have many funny memories with my old friend and neighbor!! God Bless.
I am so sorry for your loss. My heart goes out to you all in this difficult time. My fondest memory of Sam is coaching him in 8th grade track. We asked him to run the 800 and he thought he was running the 400. He sprinted the entire first lap and then we told him he had one more to go! He was a trooper and kept going giving it all he could and when a girl was coming up behind him he took off – lightening fast checking behind him to make sure she wasn’t close behind. He won the race and had a big smile on my face. His smile was infectious and one of my favorite athletes in my years of coaching.
I met Sam in Genoa, IL. He grew up in the same click of friends with Alena, Eli, Lucas, Joey, myself and many more. We all got together often as kids. After we all grew up I only saw him once in a great while. Then one day out of no where I was at a huge turning point in my life and I ran into Sam. We ended up hanging out all the time. Him, Aaron Clark and my bestfriend Melissa and myself spent a lot of time together. We all became pretty close. I got to know Sam better than I ever have. He found a special place in my heart. I would have never known that when he gave me one of his famous squeeze the breath out of ya hugs when he was leaving to go work in New Mexico that that was the last time I would see him. I didn't get to see him when he came back to town and I just wish I could have said hi and given him one more hug before he left us. I'll miss him so much. He meant a lot to me. I'll never forget his huge smiling face. It was so bright and beautiful. And the best was seeing him catch the garter at my wedding to Brandon. I'll always remember him as the hillarious guy that he was with such a huge heart. No one played with kids more when they were at an event. When no one else was playing with them... Sam was. We'll miss him always. I'm thankful for the sweet moments that we shared with him....

I met Sam back when Jimmy became friends with him. I never really got the concept of the song "Rolling Stone" until I met him. He had a happy-go-lucky personality, and was a free spirit. A flash of that great, big smile, and he could warm anyone's heart. Even when you didn't see him for a while, you would still be thinking of something funny that he did last time you seen him. He will be missed a lot. Jimmy and I have some recordings of Sam reciting his poetry on two cds. If interested in obtaining a copy, get in touch with Jimmy. I'm sure he'd be happy to make you one.
Sam-you will forever remain in our hearts and memories. You will always be a part of our family. May God bring your family peace and comfort.
Anyone who knew Sam can't help but to smile at the thoughts of everything he was, funny, charming, always quick to make others laugh right along with him. I will never forget him. Sam, if tears could make a staircase, and memories a lane, we would walk right up to heaven, and bring you home again. To his family, I am deeply and truly sorry.
I feel so lucky to have known Sam for the last few years; I will treasure the memories he has given me as some of the best ones of my adult life. I'll remember his love for Charles Bukowski and the Burger King Whopper, his smile that could make your heart melt, and his poetry that could make it weep. He was a truly unique individual, a caring friend, and an inspiring artist who will not be forgotten.
Chris, Ron, Sarah my condolences to you and your entire family. I will never forget Sam's sense of humor or that huge smile.

I knew Sam only a short time, but it was clear from the very first time I saw him at Open Mike, that he was such a sweet, kind young man. So courteous, I did not know him well, but I am so glad to have known him. His smile was real. I am so sad. I know that his family members that have passed will greet him and embrace his coming.
We'll miss you and that big smile that brightened so many lives. Our deepest condolences to Christi, Sarah and all the family and friends.
