Jose Quintana Obituary

Jose Plutarco Quintana, known most often as "Joe" died on Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013. Joe was born in Pecos, Dec. 9, 1946. His parents were Juan and Agripina Quintana.
Joe's formative years were spent at the Tres Lagunas Guest Ranch, honing his horsemanship, wood-cutting skills, and developing a love for the Santa Fe National Forest. As a sophomore at Pecos High School Joe was part of the very first basketball team to represent Pecos in the state tournament. While in high school Joe started working leather, a skill which he developed to a professional level.
Joe served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1965-1970. Joe attended Colorado State University, receiving a Bachelor's Degree in 1973 and a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1977.
Upon graduation from Veterinary School Joe journeyed to Farmington, and began his life as veterinarian at Animal Haven Clinic. Joe and his wife, Susan Moreland D.V.M., spent countless hours taking care of many four-legged creatures in the surrounding 30 mile area. In 1982, Joe took a course at CSU so that colic surgery could be offered at Animal Haven Clinic, a service exclusive to the Four Corners area. Through Joe's efforts, Animal Haven Clinic was one of the few places that could offer hospitalization for long term care for horses and farm animals. Joe was a devoted veterinarian especially to the horse but extending quality care to all species. Joe often remarked that the influence of his grandmother, Valentina Quintana, a renowned healer in Pecos sensitized his veterinary skills. Joe credited his father, Juan with being the premier horseman sharing his wisdom and ways with his son.
Joe is preceded in death by his father, Juan; sisters, Luciana and Socorro; and brother, John.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Moreland; his mother, Agripina Quintana; his brothers, Lorenzo (Pam) Quintana, Leonard (Betty) Quintana; his sister, Valentina (Ray) Chavez and many nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place.
A rosary will be recited at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 2100 E. 20th St. in Farmington.
A memorial Mass will follow at 11 a.m.
A reception will follow the Mass and Words of Remembrance in the Parish Hall.
The staff of Animal Haven Clinic will be honorary pallbearers.
Interment will be at a later date in the family cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Kona Fund, In Care of: Animal Haven Clinic, 822 E. Main St Farmington, NM 87401, or to the Riley Industrial Men's Health Fund P.O. Box 110, Farmington, NM 87499.

Dr Q through the years you were indeed so special to our family in Shiprock especially during the annual cattle herd vacs and evaluations and the periodic cow/calf emergencies. Your guidance to our father Willard Frazier was invaluable even after his passing. We know he shared our Navajo ways with you in understanding the animal being. We will surely miss you.

There have been many times I thanked God for this truly exceptional doctor and friend.
Joe was never to busy to offer his expertise. He seemed to always have the solution.
I have many fond memories of him sitting at my kitchen table to drink coffee and share a meal or fresh sweets I tried to always have for him after a call for the horses or cows.
As everyone knows there will never be another come close to Dr. Joe Quintana.
God broke the mold when he made Joe.
Susan, you are in my thoughts and prayers as you go through this time of loss. You were blessed to love such a man and have his love in return.
You will be together again.
Thank you for sharing him with us.

Dr. Q gave my girls their first horse and has cared for several other animals of ours. My girls will never forget the day Dr. Q pulled into our driveway on Xmas Eve. He was with my sister Michelle. The kids had an idea of what was happening but it was so special when they took Toby out of the trailer and he had a huge bow around his neck. Thanks Dr. Q

Dr. Quintana was the epitome of "horseman." When he was treating my mare for colic, he told me, "I do this because I have a passion for these animals. I truly love horses and all that they represent." He wasn't exaggerating. I've never seen anyone, vet or otherwise, that wanted EVERY horse to live happy, healthy lives like he did. Farmington has lost an awesome vet and person and Heaven has surely gained an angel. So very sorry for Dr. M, and family's, loss.
