Billie Sheaffer Obituary

Billie Sheaffer, who was certainly the patron saint of birdlife in Long Beach for almost 50 years, died at her Ladoga Avenue home in Long Beach's Plaza neighborhood on Jan. 8, 2015, of congestive heart disease. She was 86.
More than half of Sheaffer's life was devoted to avian care, from teacup-size hummingbirds to great horned owls with wingspans which could cover her 4-foot-8-inch frame.

I just happened to think of Ms. Sheaffer this afternoon. She was the kindergarten teacher of my two oldest sons. Ms. Sheaffer was a wonderful teacher for my children. For many years we would bring sick or injured birds to her home. A very kind and loving person who we will dearly miss. Anna Veach

Billie was my K/1 teacher at Willard Elementary. I remember her feeding a scrub jay that would walk in the front door of our bungalow classroom. Loved that I had the chance to reconnect with her as an adult at El Dorado Nature Center. She was an amazing woman and she will be missed.

Billie, I will always miss you. She was always so
Wonderful to everyone at Long Beach Animal Hospital. She gave so much to all of us because we cared for the birds she loved so much. Cakes for every holiday. So many Christmas presents. So much love and thankfulness. I have never met anyone like her and probably never will again. I am so happy she found Chang Gu when she did. He meant so much to her. I know Lee will always miss his mom. It is so sad that she is gone. It's difficult to put into words. Thank you Billie for all you did.
Now fly free with all the birds, and with Chang Gu. You will never be forgotten.

So sad to hear this news. "Billie the Bird Lady" is a Long Beach legend. My parents and I were always calling her about injured birds throughout the years. She was tireless and always happy to help. Long Beach birds have lost a true friend, and our city just won't be the same without her. ??

What a loss for the birds and for Long Beach! Billie not only took care of injured and orphaned birds, she advocated for their protection. Since she was brought so many birds, injured and killed by fishing line and hooks, she worked for years trying to educate the fishermen at El Dorado Park on the dangers of their equipment. She was one of the founders of Save the Park and raised thousands of dollars to bring a successful lawsuit which kept a commercial sports center out of El Dorado Regional. Thank you, Billie. Rest in peace.

Billie and I worked together at Cubberley Elementary. She had bluejays that knew her and would arrive each day to pick up a handout from the counter. When I saw the announcement for a meeting to save El Dorado park from commercial encroachment and it had Billie's name on it, I knew it was important and I reconnected with her. She was a good friend.

I worked with her for many years taking care of wild birds. She would take the hawks, falcons, etc. that I had that were ready for large flight cages. She would bring me smaller birds and crows (my favorite & specialty). She was always available to answer questions and help in anyway she could. She will be greatly missed in the bird rehab community. RIP
