Jamie Watson Obituary

Jamie Ruth Watson, an inveterate community volunteer and chair of the Torrance Planning Commission, was found dead at home Monday by police officers making a welfare check at the request of friends who hadn't heard from her for several days. She was 68.
A city resident for 54 years, Watson is believed to have died of natural causes at her house on Arlington Avenue in Old Torrance, authorities said.
Watson served on the boards or in leadership roles with several groups, including the Torrance Historical Society, Salvation Army and local chapters of the League of Women Voters and Surfrider Foundation.

Oh, my. How strange that I just found about Jamie's passing almost a year to the day she died. I knew Jamie for forty years, we were coworkers at B Dalton in Palos Verdes and until I moved out of Los Angeles area, I went to every one of her incredible Christmas parties. I knew something was off when I got the Christmas card I sent to her last month returned a couple of weeks later. I didn't dare look, but had to know, so found out this way. Rest in peace, dear lady. I envied her travels and adventures so much!

Hi There,
I was very sad to learn of Jamie's premature passing. She had so much life in her. It's hard to believe that she's not still with us. She and I served on the Salvation Army Advisory Board together and I loved her productive and warm spirit. She made a point to help out extensively with our fundraisers and she was always a hoot to be around. Loved her laugh and her knowledge. She was very proud of having taken care of her mom in her mom's later years and she was sad of her passing. I remember we spoke about it together not too long ago in front of the Torrance Art Museum. She had a new boyfriend who seemed really wonderful and I was so happy for her. I miss her and may her soul rest in peace. So long Jamie. You were one swell girl who will never be forgotten.
Much Love, Stephanie

Jamie had a gift of friendship. She loved learning, sharing her interest in people and places, and entertaining in her home. Her parties were legendary. She also loved cats, teapots, books and so much more. We will miss her wide smile, deep laugh, and just sharing a cup of tea.
Rest in peace, my dear friend.

Jamie is a well traveled and read woman who has so much knowledge and experiences to share. I am so grateful to have known her through the Betsy-Tacy Society. I know she is happy and at peace but I will dearly miss her and the events at her home. It is a blessing to know her.

Always enjoyed holiday gathering in Jamie's home & hearing about her travels. I was fortunate to hear some of her talks on women authors, so well researched and enjoyable, enjoyed her friendship, a very warm and caring person!

Jamie and I were email friends, with many things in common, including library work, a love of the Betsy-Tacy series of books and a fondness for the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer (she was proud that Buffy's high school was actually in Torrance.) I am sorry I never had the chance to meet her in person but will cherish many years of written memories. Sincere condolences to her family and friends.

Jamie was a dear member of the Southern California Chapter of the Betsy-Tacy Society. A beautiful person inside and out, I will always remember her and our conversations regarding her world wide travels and our shared love of all things historic. Jamie, you will be missed as heaven gains an angel.

Jamie: Still reeling with the news. I tried to call you yesterday morning and the phone rang and rang. Now I know why. Make this new adventure be full of photo opportunities. I'll miss meeting for breakfast after your trips and watching you untangle your necklaces. I'll miss going places with you in Torrance and Hermosa and how you knew everybody. I'll miss your tales of wild surfers and beach life and being rescued. I'll miss how your cat would nip your toes out of jealousy if you spent too much time on the phone with me. There is too much to list. May you be in light, peace and clear waters.

I have known Jamie for over 50 years. Her mom was married to my dad. We had good times together back in the mid 70s when we were both in Rome. I remember the winter of 1973 when we were both visiting her brother, Bill, in Fulda and the fun we had driving around Germany. I was always amazed at the places she had been, especially Manchuria! She was so smart. Her room was filled with books, as was the garage. She was an amazing woman and I will miss her.
