Maralin Niska Obituary

Soprano Maralin Niska, a San Pedro native and former Torrance elementary schoolteacher who went on to sing more leading roles (29) at the New York City Opera than anyone else, died last week at her home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She was 89.
Niska debuted in 1967 in "Marriage of Figaro" and, for the next two decades, sang leading roles for both the New York and the Metropolitan operas.

Worked with Maralin at City Opera in the early 1970s in "Traviata"
and many other operas. She had the looks of a screen goddess and
a gorgeous voice besides. Was one of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet.

As a college student in the late 60's, I had the pleasure of meeting Maralin through friends. My greatest memories are of her serving us breakfast. Opera and scrambled eggs have never been better. She was definitely a great diva.

My name is Rita Andriello and I studied with Maralin from approximately 1981 - 1990 as Rita Braziel. She coached me through roles such as Maria and West Side Story and Maria in Sound of Music. She always traveled to support me. I remember her standing up for me when I was in need with the Albuquerque Opera. She believed in me. She brought out the full expanse of my voice. I am sorry to hear of her passing, but I do know her continued expanded eternal journey as a Divine Presence of Love. Bill, I send you love and light and comfort in your time of loss. Maralin was an amazing teacher and mentor. Love, Rita

My name is Rita Andriello and I studied with Maralin Niska as Rita Braziel from 1981 - approximately 1990. She coached me through performances of Maria in Sound of Music and Maria in West Side Story and so many others. Because of her, I gained full expanse of my voice. She created workshops for all of us to perform under her guidance. Maralin was a pivotal part of my life - a giving teacher and mentor. I am grateful for her and all she contributed to me as an artist and as a person. I send Love and Blessings to her husband Bill. I know her continued expanding eternal journey of Love. Thank you, Maralin for all you gave me and the world. Love, Rita

So saddened by the loss of Maralin but we are all fortunate to have had her in our lives. A gifted musician and remarkable woman. Many fond memories of working with her in the 1970s and a long association with the Santa Fe Opera. The diversity of her roles and her constant passionate enthusiasm for people, music, and the arts were inspirational.

Thinking of you, Bill, and all of Maralin's friends and family. You were a tower of strength for her as she faced her declining health with characteristic spirit and courage. I miss her, but am very grateful for many good memories of a singular talent and a good friend.
