Lavonne Solie Obituary

Lavonne Solie

July 15, 1923 - December 11, 2012

Lavonne was a "Pedro girl," through and through. Born to parents who moved around Los Angeles in her early years, she attended 13 different elementary schools. Once the family settled in San Pedro and she enrolled at Dana Junior High, she knew she'd "found heaven." She spent the following 70 years in San Pedro, attending San Pedro High, marrying and raising her family - for 64 of those years on the bluffs of Paseo Del Mar. Lavonne married John Kordich in 1942, and they had two sons, John and Jim. After they divorced, she enjoyed a long and happy marriage to Clyde Solie, and they had a daughter, Jane. After Clyde's death, she married Anthony Weissenberger. Lavonne was proud of the fact that she could don her gray flannel suit, "pound the pavement" for a day and come home with a job that night. Beginning with her high school days as a Van de Kamp girl, she held many retail jobs. When times were hard during WWII, she somehow convinced a Fort MacArthur sergeant that she could double-clutch a half-ton truck; she spent several years thereafter shuttling army recruits and supplies throughout Southern California as a civilian driver. In later years, Lavonne delighted in foggy walks along Paseo Del Mar, adventures around the San Pedro Harbor in the family's small sailboat, and all things outdoors. Her grandkids will fondly remember her lugging their packed lunches to the beach for a day of wave-jumping and sand-castle building. An incorrigible shopper, she was well-known to merchants far and wide, and her skill in finding highly sought-after (and supposedly sold-out) Christmas toys was legendary. The ever-present card table in the family room was where many of us learned to count, over games of 99 and Spite and Malice. Lavonne was preceded in death by Clyde Solie, son Jim Kordich, and grandson, Johnny Kordich. She is survived by son, John Kordich (Judy); daughter, Jane Niles (Ken), and grandchildren, Kate Kordich (Doug Smith), Kristin and Tom Kordich, and Emma and Jackson Niles. Services will be held on Monday, December 17 at 12pm at Green Hills Memorial Park. If you'd like to remember Lavonne, please consider a donation to the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium (http://www.cabrillomarineaquarium.org/support.asp), the Marine Mammal Care Center (http://marinemammalcare.org/donations) or another of the many groups that make San Pedro so extraordinary.
