May 03, 2013
It is such an understatement, but I had the joy, the thrill, the pleasure of seeing Richie in concert only four times. Always in Pittsburgh. Thank you Richie and Thank you Pittsburgh. When talking about him to my friends, I would often say... "Me 'n Richie have been together for a long time". And we were and we will still be. Of all of my favorite artists, I choose Richie head over heels when the mood calls for comfort, solitude, strength and courage. He played and sang with such emotion. Some times listening to him could be a cathartic experience. We saw him last in Pittsburgh 1/24/2010. I am grateful to him for pleasure watching him perform and 'hearing his message'. What a gentle soul. Peace and condolences to your family. Love you Richie, Love you Baby... Thanks

You were the primary influence that made my guitar style what it is/was. You also showed me that (re-)arrangements of others' songs can be a powerful thing. Hearing of your passing was some of the saddest news to come my way ... ever. Things are different because you were here. See you later. -- Rab Preer (Aurora CO)

Richie Havens gave a talk in FSU's Tulley Gym, I recall, and I was there to hear him speak. I was 18 years old. He was gracious and accommodating to all who came to hear him. I saw Ritchie Havens 7 times that I can remember in 4 different cities starting in the 70's. His music actually got better with age, and in my opinion he became a learned master of life and passed that on in his performances. His presence was something that could not be taught. In the 70s he would play at Applejacks in Jacksonville, and I would leave work in middle of day in coat and tie try to reserve the front row center table in advance.

I saw one of his more recent performances in front of a hard drinking crowd, not the Greenwich village coffee house crowd that would be associated with Ritchie . At the beginning, only about 1/2 the people were listening at all most were talking and drinking By the end a couple of hours later, the transformed audience had been mesmerized, drinks had been holstered, and one could hear a pin drop as he sang
acapallo.

He was genuinely appreciative of the people that showed up to hear him play .I saw him often with my loved ones, wanting them to have a Ritchie Havens experience. He performed with the panache of a wise man, and at the same time moved his audience through his music which could be fiery as well as mellow. ." Freedom" was his entry into the music world and he stirred in each of us our need for freedom.
April 24, 2013
By far the best version of "Here Comes the Sun" ever recorded. Your music will always live and bring eternal joy!

Finding Richie Havens

One splendid night in 1968, Richie
Havens sang two songs on
Johnny Carson's Tonight Show:
Something Else Again
and Don't Listen To Me.
Hearing his rich voice and the
love messages he had to convey
somehow woke up my spirit.

Mickie and I were college sophomores
but we didn't even own a stereo.
The next day after classes, I took two
buses and walked to a downtown Sears
store. To my amazement, in their puny
record department, they had Richie's
album, Something Else Again.
I handed it to the clerk and said
"I'll take this and, um, a stereo."
He gestured toward the Sears
Silvertone stereos and I chose
a boxy blue one with detachable
speakers for forty dollars.

Dad used to send me $60 a month
for food and school supplies. We got by
on Kraft Macaroni and cheese dinners,
canned soup, spaghetti with instant sauce
mix. I knew that this purchase wasn't
going to improve our menu choices.

I carried the huge boxed blue stereo
several blocks to the bus stop, took
the two buses back to Cheektowaga,
walked several blocks to the house,
carried the stereo
up the stairs to our flat,
set it up and put the album on
to play. Mickie and I listened to
that album for six months straight
until we graduated and left Buffalo.

Thirty-four years years later, we
got tickets to see Richie Havens
perform live for the first time at
R.I.T.'s Ingle Auditorium. He was
still a stellar singer - songwriter,
with unparalleled passion, his
rough rich voice cut through all
obstacles, spreading his love gospels.

After the show, he came out to meet
people, sell and autograph his new
CD's. Fans brought albums from
home for him to sign, proud of
how long they'd been his fans.

When my turn came, I got to sit
face-to-face with the masterful,
unforgettable Richie Havens.
He took and held my hand in
both of his, as I told my story
to his squirms and sighs.
We both went back in time.
As much as my finding him
meant to me, he was touched
to silence, with glistening eyes, to
hear about two broke college girls
playing the grooves right out of
Something Else Again.

My first exposure to Richie Havens was in the early 1970's when my brother brought his album and I listened to 'Handsome Johnnie' , 'Eleanor Rigby', etc. I was drawn in by the distinct and unique sound of his voice and the messages he was communicating. I have the cd of those songs, and also the cd of "Something Else Again' with 'Inside of Him', 'The Klan", 'Maggie's Farm'. I still play those songs today. They have profound meaning, even to this day. He will be greatly missed. I am thankful that I was exposed to his music and his message.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
April 23, 2013
I've been thinking about Richie all day, and I think the qualities that most defined him were his humility, musicality and love for humanity. His albums were his unique expression of the songs that profoundly resonated with him. This selfless expression translated into a conduit of love for people and the planet.

I saw him perform twice, first in the seventies and lately three or four years ago at the Jazz Cafe inLondon's Camden with my son and now wife. We had a chance to chat to him in the intermission, he was cool, relaxed and generous, I was already in love and my kids fell in love immediately - how could you help it?

I think he realised long before the rest of us, that politicians would never provide the answers, change must be driven by our hearts, from our godless souls. Only love of humanity, and love for the earth we live on, will save us. It's in our hands, so teach your children well.
April 23, 2013
R.I.P. Richie. I remember your beautiful soul. Diane xoxo

Richie was my favorite musical artist from the time I first heard him when I was in college, until now. Twice I had the pleasure of listening to him at two small concerts and meeting him briefly afterwards. I was inspired not only by his music, but for the gentleness and kindness in his soul. The world has lost a beautiful person, but I know he signs with the angels now.

While I was a young college student in Ann Arbor, Michigan, I fell in love with his unique and compelling way of communicating a universal human emotion, a message of social justice, and a feeling that you had a friend who empathized and sympathized with you. I'll never forget the joy and pride I had when I purchased "Mixed Bag", my first Richie Havens LP. I pray the Ultimate and Eternal Creator and Sustainer grants his soul peace.

Of all the multitude of songs that I love, my favorite of all time is Richie's version of Here Comes the Sun. My anthem of sheer joy. I find it no simple coincidence that Richie left us on Earth Day at a time in our country's history when we so desperately need his message of peace, freedom and love. May his magical voice live on forever and we remember that each day is new and that "it's alright." Thank you, Richie, and love and peace to all who loved him and those he loved.

In 1975 I met Richie at the Gainesville Florida Airport. He was traveling from philly with my brothers roommate in which he learned that I played the flute. After meeting him at the airport he invited me to his hotel room to play flute and jam a bit. I ended up playing flute with him for acouple days and had a great time. I met him on three other occasions throughout the years and he always remarked about how much fun we had those couple days in Gainesville.

I DUG UR MUSIC MAN!
April 23, 2013
We first saw Richie Havens at a 2005 summer music festival in Brooklin, Maine. Liked it so much, we came back for more in Ellsworth, Maine in the fall of the very next year. Whether seeing him in the mid-summer swelter or with a nip of fall in the air, Richie radiated sunshine. He actually stood in the lobby of the Grand Auditorium in Ellsworth "prior" to the show to meet and greet the audience and thank each one of us for coming. We probably only spent a few seconds with him but it didn't feel brief. Time was suspended. He instantly connected and made you feel in that moment that you were in the company of a good friend. Remarkable man. Remarkable music. Thank you Richie Havens. To his family and friends, our deepest sympathies.

When I explained my wife was home with a cold,he asked to speak to her. Well I dialed my wife and Richie spoke to her for a few minutes much to the chagrin of his manager. I will never forget his kindness. Fortunately he left a nice volume of work for which he will be remembered. Richie,God Bless you my friend.

April 22, 2013
May you rest in peace. You've inspired me to explore another part of music I hadn't imagined. I remember the days of high school in the 60's, cutting class and being the only little black girl indulging the hippie scene with friends and singing tunes from 'Mixed Bags' collection. You paved the way for many. I am so grateful . May you rest in peace. My deepest sympathy to your family...

He was a treasure to my generation. Took my kids to a concert in Schenectday, NY and they were enthralled and enriched by his performance. He will be missed but remembered for all time.
April 22, 2013
Had the chance to see Richie at the Gordon Center in Reisterstown MD a few years back. The small venue allowed his gravelly voice to capture the attention of those in the audience , even those who really weren't sure who he was. That and the way he thumbed his guitar left a memory of a vibrant and soulful man who spoke of those early days in the Village with Dylan, late coffee shop nights, and the rising sun over a New York Skyline. A Wonderful and Gentle Soul who Mother Earth will miss. .- Maz-52

April 22, 2013
Deep sympathy. He was a great human being. He was so much a part of my life, a piece of me has passed.
April 22, 2013

Apr. 22, 2013 is a very sad day for so many throughout the world and for me personally. . .Working with Richie to write his book - a very good book, one with no curse words, no sexual exploits, but a book that shared how he self taught himself virtually everything, as a way to give the impetus to children to push forward with their own dreams, - was the single most enjoyable professional experience of my life.

Besides that, he was a great friend, an amazing, fantastic performer, a truly warm hearted, giving human being.
I was most privileged to co author his autobiography in 1999, "They Can't Hide Us Anymore," which is what he said looking out to the 500,000 in attendance when he was asked to perform first of all the talents who would appear there. . . .The promoters of the event actually appealed to Richie to perform for 20 minutes or so, because no one wanted to be first.
Instead of 20 minutes, the crowd kept him on stage for more than 2 hours with their cheers and demands for more.

Frankly, if you never saw Richie perform over the nearly 40 years he appeared in so many places, or the 14 times he sang so passionately and played his amazing guitar on the old Johnny Carson Show, you missed one of the most dynamic singer-performers of modern times, truly so.
Many throughout the world loved this man, a member of Folk Music's Hall of Fame, who helped the careers of so many in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame that he should be there too. God bless Richie Havens, God blessed us with his presence.
Steve Davidowitz
