To Roger Ebert,
You were a great movie critic for the program at the movies. My prayers go to your family and friends. Lisa Weiner
Roger was a neighbor on E. Washington St., Urbana. His mother--and several of his neighbors--and my mother were friends. He was a schoolmate. And he was the modern writer I most admired. We learned of his passing while we were in New York involved with last minute festivities associated with the wedding of our daughter to another actor. It seemed impossible because I always thought of Roger as someone who would somehow always be with us. In a way, he is. Chaz and family, I have thought of you since then. Chaz, God blessed you and Roger, you found each other. My sincere hope is that the memories you built together will bring you great comfort.
His gift will not be forgotten. My prayers are with the family and this sad time. 1 Thessalonians 5:11
To Roger Ebert,
You were a great critic for the movies. My prayers go to you, your family, and friends. God Bless you Mr. Ebert for being a great movie critic. Great job! Well done. Lisa Weiner
Sending prayers and strength to Chaz and the Ebert family. Roger will be deeply missed. I always read his reviews. I miss those reviews. He was a strong courageous man, someone to be admired.
My condolences to Chaz and all of Roger's family and friends. I had the pleasure of working with Roger on his own movie, Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls, and then being with him at his film festival where the Strawberry Alarm Clock reunited to close the festival with a concert for Roger after a screening of BTVOTD. A great movie critic, a smart man, a courageous man, a joyful man. Love to you, Chaz.
My thoughts and prayers go out to Chaz Ebert and the Ebert Family for their loss. Thanks for sharing Roger with us for so many years. God Bless.
Roger Ebert was always the movie critic I looked forward to watching on television. He and Siskel in the old days formed the perfect team sharing complementary views and divergent opinions on movies that elevated my awareness of cinema. Roger was a great critic and a great teacher. He was like having an erudite companion whose cinematic understanding was encyclopedic. He was a genius and a great soul. God bless him forever.
Roger Ebert was a joy to watch and his reviews were more entertaining than some movies! Now Roger and Gene can discuss films all they want! Condolences to family and friends. RIP Roger!
You will be truly missed. Rest in Peace with the Lord!
TO THE EBERT FAMILY, ROGER WILL BE A TREASURED LOST TO ALL WHO WATCHED HIM ON T.V. STAY STRONG AND GOD BLESS YOU ALL
How I loved your reviews. I have no idea how I will pick a movie now! May you rest in peace.
RIP U WONDERFUL MAN! U WILL B MISSED. :'-(
Roger will never be forgotten for his legacy for film reviews. Prayers for his family.
My heartfelt condolences to Chaz and the family. Thanks for all of those "from the heart reviews" of all of those movies. You will be missed.Rest in Peace Roger. In loving memory of a wonderful person. We will love you and miss you always.
Roger was such a crucial part of my formative years. Film was a huge part of my social life and his comments and reviews were well-sought after. He lived the dream and helped us all dream of a better life. Hats off, Thumbs Up and Keep an aisle seat open.
Roger, your life will last beyond the season, because your life gave thought to reason...
WE ARE SENDING OUR LOVE,PRAYERS,&CONDOLENCES TO THE EBERT FAMILY,FRIEND,FANS,&ALL WHO KNEW MR. EBERT.
To Mrs Ebert & Family,
My deepest sympathy goes out to you and your family. I'm very sorry for your loss. You are in my prayers. May your heart heal in time.
Robert Ebert was a wonderful film critic. I was deeply inspired by his writing style. R.I.P
Robert was a truthful and expert critic and I often relied on his and Gene's recommendations for what to see at the movies. I met him when he visited Disney studios in 1993 and talked briefly with him and Gene and found them to both be very courteous, friendly and helpful to me and all of us at the special Review of the Oscars taping being done there at the time. The movie review world has truly lost a gem of a man this week. My sympathy to his family, friends and fans around the world.
What a loss? It is of Rober Ebert, Urbana High School Class of 1960. It is so touching that you and Chaz were there, to include no book signings but a night for gathering, reminiscing, and loving one another. Lots of remembering about growing up in Urbana,IL. Rest in peace, dear Roger.
What a loss! My father, Irv, loved watching "Siskel and Ebert". Brings back some fabulous memories! RIP Roger, you fought the good fight and can now review movies in heaven with Gene and Irv! Laura Chez, Tinley Park, IL
r.i.p. i loved to here you give
May god bless you on your journey home
I grew up watching Siskel and Ebert and believe that the world has lost another great man. I believe that Mr. Ebert had the grace to recognize (and help with) the needs of others and showed such finesse, and grace, that very few knew of his Christian efforts to help others. My condolences to his family, in their time of grieving, however; I hope that they know that he will be missed but his legacy will live on. He is in God's arms now and he no longer feels any pain! What a wonderful man he was...
May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
Rest in Peace my Friend. Enjoyed the Malts & Coversation at Goldie's in Michigan....Great Memories!
Bob Kill, Crestwood,Il.
You have left a geat impact on humanity...it is now your turn to rest peacefully.
You are missed.
To the Ebert family and many friends. May GOD see you through this season.
Rest in peace, my friend. You will live on in many memories
May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
I enjoyed your fair and honest reviews. You made me want to go to the movies and enjoy. You were a true, brave warrior in your fight with cancer and never gave up. You will be missed very much. Sincere sympathy to your family.

I miss him already. I will greatly miss the pointed commentary and the fabulous wit that was Ebert.
My deepest condolences to his family and friends. He will remain etched in our hearts and history forever.
Thank you, Mr Ebert, for working as a wonderful critic whose movies review made your this possible. You were wonderful, kind, and great!! I saw him on TV doing his movie reviews on my favorite Mel Gibson flicks, "The Passion of the Christ" and "Apocalypto!!" I still enjoy them on DVD!!
Rest in eternal peace, Roger, you will be missed!
1Cor 15:26 promises that death will be no more..
My condolences to the Ebert Family
May the God of comfort be with you always 2 Cor. 1:3
With Deep Sympathy
We love you Roger and you will be missed. Rest in Peace.
Mr. Ebert'opinion was very important to me I enjoyed him so much.I pray that our heavenly father grant peace to his family.(Eph.1:2)Barb Meill, Concord,NC
Years ago when I was a 'fledgling' in AA. I met Roger at a St. Clement meeting. I will never forget how kind he was, asking me out with his friends for pizza. I declined but always remember him in that lovely gesture. I cried when I heard he had passed. My condolences to a beautiful family he was so fortunate to love.
I used to see you downtown alot. You wre as normal as one can be. Years ago you wrote an article about politics that showed your very high intelligence and ability to discern things around you. I no longer live in Chicago but I do not need to be close to appreciate your contribution to American society. Thanks for the memories.
My condolences to the family. He will be sorely missed.
My hero Mr. Ebert taught me a great deal about movies through his amazing writing. I always dreamed of him reviewing a movie of mine. I was excited when I knew Family Weekend was opening in Chicago this past weekend, because I thought maybe the movie review master would see it. Sadly, Ebert was at war with cancer yet again. And this time we lost him.
I will miss Mr. Ebert. He critiqued each film according to its genre, its own playing field. He never looked down upon mass-market movies just because they were meant for commercial entertainment and he never heralded art or indie films just because they were meant to impress him. He judged movies on whether or not they spoke to him as a human. He reviewed movies with his heart first and foremost. But could clearly place the great movies in their historical cinematic context with his brilliant mind.
I always knew if Ebert loved a movie I would too. And if a movie spoke to me, I would run home to my computer and read his words to clarify to myself why I felt the way I did.
Thank you, Mr. Ebert, I will miss you. And so will "The Movies".
My sons and I unexpectedly met Mr. Ebert while doing errands in 1999. We are grateful to have met such a kind and wonderful gentleman. Our deepest sympathy to the Ebert family during your time of sorrow.
To Roger Ebert,
You were a great critic for the movies and I give you a two thumbs up. My prayers are with you, your family and friends. God Bless you Mr. Ebert for beihg a great movie critic. Lisa Weiner

My husband and I love movies, and we always looked for Roger Ebert's reviews first. We will miss his intelligence and humor. Our deepest condolences to his family.
An honest man is gone. He will be missed!

I have been battling head and neck cancer since 2002. I also lost part of my jaw so have always felt so much empathy for Mr.
I am a surviver of head and neck cancer and know how devastating it is. My heart goes out to all of you. It is a tough road. May Mr. Ebert rest in peace.
My sincere condolences. I looked up to Roger Ebert as an inspiration, since I am a vocal chord cancer patient, (Larygectomy), and surviver. He will always be remembered.
His criticism of films helped the viewer or movie goer to decide what was worth seeing. His valuable knowledge and his personal fight against cancer made me realize that our real hero's are real people. Thank you Mr. Ebert for your service of guiding our viewing of what really counts people. Have a Blessed trip to heaven-SirLiamKoppe
My condolences to the Ebert family, like Roger I to loved the movies, he was a amazing as a critic, but mostly for being a wonderful man. The balcony is closed. RIP Roger
I am deeply saddened by Roger Ebert's passing. For the past 40 years, he has guided me through movies. Reading his reviews brought a richness to the experience that I looked forward to EVERYTIME I watched a movie. And it wasn't just the “review” that touched me it was the way he wrote about things. He had this way of being keenly insightful, very clever in his choice of words and efficient in his presentation. It must be the quality his colleagues mean when they say he had the soul of a poet. I will miss him and am ever so grateful for 40 years of movie reviews. May He Rest In Peace.
So sorry that mr. Ebert had to suffer through all the surgeries, chemo and radiation treatments related to his illness. I am proud that he declined further treatment and decided it was time to let go.
May you rest in peace, you earned it. May God bless and keep you.
What and inspiration. Roger, rest in peace.
In My Pocket
I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.
My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.
They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.
Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.
But of all the treasures I have, it's the memories of you that are the most precious.
By Lamaretta Simmons
My condolences to the family. Mr Ebert will be truly missed. Be certain and trust in God that you can lean on Him for comfort.
Mrs. Ebert and family and friends: Thank you taking of and sharing Roger in both good and bad times. He was one to be admired...the show (review)must go on. Roger is no longer in pain, he is in a much larger stage, watching over his wife, family and friends. Thoughts and prayers to all. He will be missed but not forgotten.
May an amazing peace be granted to the Ebert Family, with the assurance that God's grace is in abundance. Thank Jesus for sharing him with us. May he RIP. He will be greatly missed.
So saddened to hear of this loss. Loved watching him on televison and listening to him and will very much miss him. To his family and friends, many thoughts and prayers are with you all. Carolyn Deacon Smith - Lynchburg, Virginia

We anxiously awaited Siskel & Ebert every week - had to get their take on the movies - it was all that mattered. Such a seemingly gentle man whom I know will be missed by his loving family and all who knew him personally.
Rest in peace Mr.Ebert....you'll b greatly missed.
You were a good guy who brought laughter and class to life's party, and wouldn't we all like to be remembered that way?

Rest in Peace, Mr. Ebert. The balcony is closed...
Roger was my guide to wonderful movies for his reviewing life. I loved his sense of humor and, while not always agreeing with him, always enjoyed his reviews.
From an 82 year-old fan.
Mrs. Ebert may you and your family be assured that your loving husband is at rest; as he is also at peace. Mrs. Ebert you have shown the world what the true definition of LOVE is and means! My most heartfelt condolences go out to you! May God Bless You!
Good Bye old friend, it was a pleasure to have known you and work with both you and Gene Siskel... Rest in Peace...
I enjoyed your work and will miss it. Rest in peace.
Thumbs up Mr. Ebert. Rest in Peace.
Roger was a Big part of Chicago. RIP
I remember meeting you when I would visit my sister, Regan, in Chicago. You were the ultimate gentleman. You were the Rennaisance man.
To Mr. Ebert's Family: May you be surrounded by love at this very sorrowful time. His courage in this life was outstanding and believe he is now at peace. An Admirer of his talents
YES, thou art gone! and never more
Thy sunny smile shall gladden me;
But I may pass the old church door,
And pace the floor that covers thee.
May stand upon the cold, damp stone,
And think that, frozen, lies below
The lightest heart that I have known,
The kindest I shall ever know.
Yet, though I cannot see thee more,
'Tis still a comfort to have seen;
And though thy transient life is o'er,
'Tis sweet to think that thou hast been;
To think a soul so near divine,
Within a form so angel fair,
United to a heart like thine,
Has gladdened once our humble sphere.

Each spring, students at the University of Colorado looked forward with great anticipation to Roger Ebert's participation in the annual Conference on World Affairs. Mr. Ebert's witty and insightful contributions to a wide array of panel discussions were a highlight of the entire conference. And his no-holds-barred "Democracy in the Dark" weeklong movie analyses remain a highlight of my entire college career. Roger, we will never forget you.
Deepest sympathy to the Ebert Family. Roger and Gene were a delight to watch during the time they were together, their verbal jabs and all. Just like being at a family gathering. Thanks for passing through our lives. Go with God. RIP.
I had a chance to have conversations with R.E. some years ago.
It was after the opening evening screening of 'Das Boot' at the Biograph.
I asked him how he knew that a film was good.
His reply, "I know that a film is good when for 51% of the time I am NOT aware that I am sitting in an uncomfortable seat in a stinky movie house surrounded by crying infants, the cracking of pistachio shells, and the constant chatter about anything other than the film itself".
Basically, he said that if a movie was good enough to absorb you and allow you to be able to tune out all of those distractions, then that was probably gonna be a 'Thumb's Up'.
I blame you Roger for helping me define for myself how to view, listen, and experience the whole movie--even if for just 51% of the time.
RIP Professor Ebert.
Very sad day. Roger was a great writer and thinker about life in general, not just the movies, and we're all the poorer without his commentary. I'm not sure there's another movie critic out there who can fill the vacancy he's going to leave behind. Still, it's nice to think of Ebert and Siskel back together again, reviewing movies and arguing about them, in perpetuity.
More than 30 years in your film class and I learned so much, laughed, thought and even enjoyed your teasing me. You were a wonderful friend and I cherish that friendship. May Chaz and those you hold dear be comforted by wonderful memories of you and may your memory be for a blessing. Sherry Fox
I remember when I was a young kid we would always get rogers review and mom said any movie he gave thumbs up we could go and see. He never let us down hHe will be missed.
I would always watch his reviews. He was the ultimate critic. Some times hae got it right and some times not. God Bless his Family. He will always live in the Light.
To the Ebert Family; I am very sorry for your loss of Mr. Ebert. My deepest sincere sympathy to you all. I know he will be missed very much. I enjoyed watching him and Mr. Sisko doing their movie reviews very much!
Our thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. May your memories bring you comfort.
My deepest sympathy to your family. You will be missed.
I was an avid fan, reading Roger's material for 41 years. Watching he and Siskel on Sat evenings then heading out for a late movie became part of my weekend routine. He will be missed.
Our sincere & heartfelt condolences go out to the Ebert family. May the God of all comfort, who comforts all the mourning ones, help you during your time of sorrow.
With deepest sympathy,
You can't say he wasn't interesting. What joy he brought to us all.
A gentle man in every respect who enjoyed the esteem of all good men. He wasn't just a movie critic but a man who taught us all about respect, human dignity, and true acceptance of our fellow man. May peace be upon him as he ventures into a new life without pain.
I thank Roger for all the enjoyable and thoughtful movie reviews and comments. I watched Siskel & Ebert regularly as my hometown is Chicago. He definitely was one of a kind and will be truly missed. He handled his medical issues with such dignity and class. My deepest sympathy.
To The Family of Roger Ebert,

Much love to the family, in great appreciation of a talented, personable man.
It is the end of an era. He brought honesty and intelligence to film criticism. I hope he inspires a successor from above. His life gets two thumbs way up. I will miss him.
I loved your Saturday morning movie reviews. You were a mogul as a film critic and inspired me to go to movies and to listen and understand. The art world was richer for your bright mind. I am saddened to hear about your death after such a long struggle with cancer. May your memory be a blessing for all of us.
Thank you Mr. Ebert for all that you gave the world. You always gave people a ray of hope through your hard ships. thank you for being you.

Roger Ebert Family:
I am sorry for your loss. Roger was a well known critic for years. I can recall when I was growing wishing I could have his job one day. May fond memories, friends, family and our Heavenly Father be of comfort to you during this time of grief.
I was so sorry to hear of the passing of your dear Roger. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this sad time. Take care.
Chaz: I recall asking Roger at your going away party over 20 years ago if he could recommend some movies for young kids. He realized that was an important issue for Kathy and me at the time and took time to discuss some good movies for kids. He didn't brush off the question as not worthy of his time as a famous movie critic. I took a liking to him then. I am sorry for your and your family's loss. Gordon
May the God of comfort and peace be with the Ebert family.May his fond memories stay close the your hearts.Revelation21:4.
The final curtain, but will meet again in the big theater, to watch a good movie and your review etched in stone this time as it should have been all along ..A vacuum was created when you left..RIP Rodger and thank you..
What a magical gift of words Roger had. 99% of the time I agreed with him. He will be sadly missed. It hurt me to see him struggle over the years....it was all in an attempt to stay with his beautiful wife and family just a little longer. This world was a better place for his being here. RIP Roger....well done.
So sorry to hear this. My thoughts & prayers are with your family. You will be missed. RIP Roger
We believed everything Roger Erbert said about movies. If he said thumbs down, we didn't go see it. If it was thumbs up, we saw it! We will miss him but know that God will use his son to resurrect all those in his memory. We may see Mr. Ebert again in good health back to life on earth.
RIP, Rog. Yours were the only reviews I trusted. Having said that, I still believe the best chili-cheese dogs are at Skyline, not Steak and Shake.
What a great loss. We will miss your timely movie guidance. May God bless the family at this difficult time and bring you comfort as you recall the many happy memories that you shared. I look forward to a better life for all of us at a better time (Matthew 6:10)
I'll see you at the movies...
MAY YOU FOREVER REST IN PEACE TWO THUMBS UP!
RIP, Mr. Ebert.

Just a heartfelt thinking of you and your family. You are a very brave man.
As a young adult, growing up in the 70's I remember how he inspired me to work in show business. It was then I wanted to be an actor. Among, the most cherished anecdotes, it was then I grew up to appreciate how he was a mentor. I will surely miss the tone.

i tuned in to see Roger & Gene's reviews on PBS week-after-week. then, followed them up & down the tv dial. would set the timer on the VHS to make sure i didn't miss the show. have great memories of making a list of movies they would recommend. gotta go and watch a movie right now, but first... Chaz, YOU are truly an angel.
Roger, as a Friend to your Readers and fellow Movie Buffs, your friendship will never be forgotten.
Thank you to Roger & Chaz for dealing with such grace a terrible physical ordeal. My husband had the same cancer and was operated on the same year as Roger. I read Roger's essay on death today in the Sun Time's website. He was such a great writer (let alone the humor and the insight he showed in his reviews). Coming from a newspaper family, I would like to think that Roger is sitting right now in the Big Press Club in the Sky with Gene, Royko, Kup and other greats of the newspaper industry. Thank you, Roger, for all your grace and wit. Rest well, my friend.
Mr.Ebert may you rest in peace.Mrs.Ebert may God bless and keep you.We were all so very grateful for the journey we went on with your loving husband-THUMBS UP!!
It may seem as if the balcony is closed for a time, but it will never close permanently. Roger's wit, grace and wisdom will never be forgotten. Thank you Chaz for sharing him with the rest of us. May peace be yours.

Mrs. Ebert and Family, we too loved your Roger and he will always have our "thumbs up". The movies in Heaven must be Angelic. Be Blessed.
What a wonderful man who I only met by TV. I always enjoyed watching him on the movie critics. What a love story for him & his wife Chaz. Prayers you his wife, children and other family members. What a loss for us. R.I.P. Roger
I had the opportunity to have dinner with Roger at the bar/restaurant directly across the street for the Biograph after the opening of 'Das Boot'.
I asked him how he qualified what a good film was.
His answer---"When I am not aware that I am sitting in a stinky movie theatre for at least 50% of the film."
To Mr. Roger's family, I hope that God's Word the Bible can help you through each day.
Roger Ebert was simply the best film critic the world has ever seen. And in the words of President Obama "Movies will never be the same"
Condolences to the Ebert family. Roger was a star in his professional as well as personal life and he made a positive difference to many.
Thank you, Chaz, for your love and support of your dear husband. We send our deepest sympathy to you, Roger's family, and all who are saddened by the loss of this brilliant man.
In his message Tuesday of his upcoming "leave of presence," perhaps Roger Ebert defined his own idea of heaven: "Reviewing only the movies I want to review."
I hope he saves seats in the balcony for all of us.
To Roger Ebert,
You made a wonderful critic for the movies. I give a two thumbs up. My prayers go to your wife and your family. Lisa Weiner

My heart is heavy for Mr. Ebert's family & friends; however, I REJOICE that he has re-joined Mr. Siskel for the Heavenly version of "Siskel & Ebert." You were an icon ALL my life. Your the first person i would look for for an honest review, what will i do? I will see you later,no one will take your place, say hello to Gene.R.I.P.
In the '80's, Roger reviewed the film "Valley Girl" and was so kind and complimentary. I wrote him a letter thanking him for his kind words, and I was amazed to get a beautiful letter back. Many years later I saw him at a press junket and took the opportunity to introduce myself and thank him in person. He was gracious, kind and I am so grateful I was able spend a few moments letting him know how important his words were to me. I will never forget that moment. Sending warm thoughts to his beautiful family.
I am so sorry to hear about your families great loss. May the "God of all comfort", comfort your family during this hard time.
TO THE EBERT FAMILY, HOLD ON TO THE MOST TREASURED THOUGHTS ROGER HAD WHICH WERE THE SPECIAL MEMORIES AND LAUGHTER HE LEFT BEHIND FOR YOU ALL TO ENJOY.."TWO THUMBS UP" WAS HIS MOST MEMORABLE SAYING, YOUR IN MY PRAYERS AND GOD BLESS YOU ALL.
To the Ebert Family: I want to first of all greet you in the name of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I want to extend my deepest sympathy in the loss of a wonderful man and hubsand. What joy, fun and intelligence Roger Ebert brought to all of us with his movie reviews. Enjoy the best seats in the balcony with Gene. Thanks for great memories, Roger.
May our lord comfort all of Roger Eberts Family and many friends .RIP
My sympathy to Chaz and the Ebert family. I always bought the Friday Sun-Times to faithfully look for Roger's movie reviews before going to see a movie. I enjoyed watching the Siskel and Ebert television broadcasts. Roger seemed to have such courage and a positive attitude dealing with his struggle with cancer. He will be missed.
Gone to soon - you inspired a generation to enjoy movies and stretch yourself in what you watched. A too late thank you.
WE ARE SENDING OUR LOVE, PRAYERS,&CONDOLENCES TO THE EBERT FAMILY,FRIENDS,FANS,&ALLL WHO KNEW MR. EBERT.
This leaves me feeling as though I've lost something I can't ever get back, that I story I loved has ended, and that I really can't go 'home again'. The older I get, the more it seems the people who make me proud to be a Chicagoan, become harder to find. Sure Chicago's a big city, and part of its legacy is back-door deals, shady politics, etc., but one of the things I loved about it, was that there was still some 'Aw Shucks', left here. For every Al Capone or Rod Blagojevich, that made us notorious, there was another Chicagoan like Roger, that made us proud. So to Roger and Gene, 'Thanks'.
Two thumbs up to you Mr.Roger Ebert. Good job.
My husband and I wish to express our deepest condolences at the passing of Roger Ebert. Mr. Ebert's critical view on film and movies will be missed. Our prayers are with the Ebert family.
May the good Lord provide the family comfort... RIP
Thank you for sharing Roger with us all of these years. I admired him and was a fan for many years. When I read his book, I saw the picture of him in his office. surrounded by a multitude of books, and that is when I knew he was a kindred spirit and why he was so eloquent and erudite. He will be missed greatly. Now this hard-working man can rest in loving peace, and now he knows if there is something beyond this life. My deepest heartfelt sympathy to his beloved wife, Chaz and his family. He was a fine man and a film scholar that will have no equal. He was blessed to have lived a "four star" life. Those of us who admired you will always see you at the movies. Thank you for sharing your journey with us.
Earth has no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal. Ms. Chaz Hammelsmith and family have my deepest sympathy.
Thank you Roger you were an inspiration to us. Thank you to Chaz and family for their devotion to such a special man. He will be sadly missed.
We will all miss you. I can't imagine reading a movie review without wondering what Ebert would say about it.
The balcony is closed forever. I will miss Mr. Ebert & Mr. Siskel both. Rest in peace, Gentlemen.
My thoughts & prayers are with the Ebert family.
Wow, Can't believe your'e gone. Thanks for for all of your good. Rest in peace.
I enjoyed watching Roger on the television when he was commenting about the different movies & etc. He will definitely be missed. He was in pain & he is better off in Heaven with God. Now he is out of pain & suffering. God Bless all of your family.
MAY GOD BE WITH THE EBERT FAMILY AND FRIENDS IN THIS TIME OF YOUR LOSE GOD HAS ANOTHER ANGEL.
Thank you for your insight and years of film commentary. You were a national treasure and shall be missed. My deepest condolences go out to your family and friends.
RIP, Mr. Ebert...I can see you reunited now with Gene Siskel in that Great Upper Balcony in the Sky!
TWO THUMBS UP...
From a former Chicago area fan
Our sincerest sympathies go to dear Chaz and her family.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the Ebert family at this very sad time. To you Roger Ebert: "The balcony will never be closed, your seat will always be open." R.I.P.
Thank you for sharing a part of your life with us.
My deepest sympathy and prayers to the Ebert family.
My prayers, thoughts & condolences go out to the beloved wife, family, friends, and associates of Roger Ebert. As a movie lover, Roger was my go-to critic and he was usually right-on in his opinions. His t.v. show with the late, also great, Gene Siskel was must see t.v. I was so sorry when I first learned Roger had cancer & my prayers for his recovery were with him then. He fought the good fight to the very end. His dignity & courage are an inspiration to all of us. May he rest in peace.
Awesome person, professionally and just seemed like a wonderful person. Sympathy to his very devoted wife and all who knew and loved him. May God receive him into his arms...God bless.
If I had a nickel for every review I read of Roger's since he became a movie credit....going to miss him alot!!! My thoughts and prayers are with his family , friends and all those who feel the same loss in their hearts. Just one of many memories of Roger. I was taking a film class at a local college in 76'. Roger came to speak and afterwards stayed with the class for awhile answering additional questions. Wound up walking out with him to his car...the whole time talking movies....he loved his profession and art. Left a great enduring impression of himself to this movie buff...Two Thumbs Up to Heaven!!!
Our thoughts & prayers go with Chaz and her family, we loved Roger, he became a staple in our household thru the years beginning with Siskel & Ebert, he will be missed not only as a great human being but his works, will miss his reviews on movies terribly.
Pete & Debbie
He mas the greatest & he will be missed. His family & friends ya will be in our prayers.
I want to send our heart & prayers to Ebert's family. Roger can never be replaced. Like the saying goes when the lord made him, he broked the mold. So I leave ya with our deepest memories. With LOVE.
A few years ago on a talk show, I saw an interview with Mr. Roger Ebert's wife. Mrs. Ebert was discussing her love for her husband and the many things that she loved about him.
She talked about his kindness, and what a good family man he was. She said he had such deep respect for women, and all people, regardless of their cultures. That is one of the reasons I respected Mr. Ebert.
You've fought the good fight, Mr. Ebert, and you will forever inspire people with your courage.
"Fan" - Spartanburg SC
My deepest sympathy to the Ebert family, on your loss of your dear husband and father.
Mr. Ebert you fought an amazing fight. Even when you were knocked down! you came back swinging! So I will not say goodbye! just thank you! for all the good movie recommendations and I'll see you next at the movies....two thumbs up!!
Our thoughts and prayers are with Roger Ebert's family, friends, and fans. I always enjoyed his reviews. We can all look forward to a time when death and tears of sorrow will be no more.
Chaz-- memories of our childhood together in C-U will always be with me. If I can do anything let me know.
Dear Mr. Ebert, way back when, I was a fan of Siskel and Ebert. A Chicago transplant, watching the show always felt like being home. Thank you for sharing your insight into movies and what made them outstanding. So many of my favorite movies were those I discovered because of your recommendations.
Mr. Ebert simultaneously elevated the art of film criticism and brought it down to earth. The fact that he so deeply cared about film rubbed off on those who read or listened to his well-chosen words. That Pulitzer Prize he won all those years ago was richly deserved. Roger Ebert may be gone but he will not soon be forgotten.
I enjoyed watching Siskel & Ebert. Roger you will be missed. RIP.
May the eternal light shine upon him.....
I loved his show because then you knew what to go see and what not to waste your money on.
Velma Quinn Waukegan,Il
To the Ebert family,
I enjoy and respect his work. As an advid follower, he will be missed.
No leave of presence, you're still here, still felt. RIP
We have another one of our greats that has passed away. He did what he loved the best. Prayers go to his Family, and many friends. My family also used his critics either to go see a show, or save our money. Thanks Roger for the memories. GOD bless!
I loved your wit.
RIP Roger. God needed another angel.
Thank you for the wonderful memories and letting me know when and when not to go to the movies. You will be greatly missed by your fans.
We will miss your wit and insight Mr Ebert! Job well done -- Live Worthy!!!
Thank you for all you did for us as movie goers. Rest in Peace, you deserve it.
Condolences to the family. May the God of all comfort fill your hearts with peace at this sad time. Ebert will be miss.
I always trusted your judgement in selecting movies. You will be missed. Rest in peace.
Mr. Ebert you were wonderful. Thank you for all the joy; say Hi! to Gene.
Thanks for saving me a lot of money! If you said it was a bad movie,I would scratch it off my list of movies to see. Enjoy heaven the critics say it's a wonderful place.
Rest in Eternal Peace......Life well-lived, Job well-done.........Thank You
Enjoyed listening to Mr.Ebert.My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Although we never met Roger or corresponded with him in any way my husband & I feel like we've lost a friend. We have been reading Roger for many years and loved his enthusiasm for movies and life in general.Very sad to think we'll never see his byline again in the Sun-Times. Our sympathies to his family.
May God send to you His comforter and His peace in the days and weeks ahead as you mourn the loss of your beloved Roger. You will remain in my thoughts and prayers. With love and sympathy,
Rest in Peace Roger. He is a top reason I am so proud to be from Chicago! He was so very smart, entertaining, not to mention courageous is his fight. I already miss his writings. I hope he now is able to enjoy food again as I know he was unable to do so for the past couple of years. Sincere condolences to Chaz and the rest of his family. He will be so dearly missed and never forgotten.
Years ago, I was sitting at the window in a downtown Chicago hot dog joint, and Roger walked by, heading toward the Sun-Times building. It was one of those very brisk Chicago days, and he was well-bundled, with his head down, fighting against the wind. I wanted to run after him, to tell him how many movies I had seen - big and small - just because he told me about them. I didn't, but he did. God's speed, Roger.
I am huge fan of films and it's singularly because of Siskle & Ebert.
I will miss them both terribly now, but their legacy of decency, honestly, enthusiasm, lust for life and intelligent conversation will endure for ever and I rejoice so much for them sharing these and many other gifts with me and the world.
So on this day of Mr. Ebert's passing I especially wish to convey I will remember him always and I offer to him and his family the only words I think reflect what I feel this morning;
Bless you, farewell and thank you so much, thank you, thank you and thank you.
He lived his life with "A Two Thumbs Up"! My sympathy to his family.
"So on this day of reflection I say again, thank you for going on this journey with me. I'll see you at the movies." -- Roger Ebert
Rest In Peace.
I lived there during the "mini-golden age of Chicago journalism". Came to SunTim es page when I heard of Roger's passing. He was the example of how to really live and enjoy life.
I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Ebert's passing. He has had such a wonderful attitude the entire time and an inspiration to everyone. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family and friends.

I never met Roger personally, but his was a name that I trusted to guide me toward a quality movie. I view movies as entertainment, but Roger helped me see that there was an art to the flickering images that we both so love.
i remember meeting Chaz and Roger at Cannes Film Festival. What an inspiration! Stephanie Parker
I enjoyed listening to Mr. Ebert. He touched so many of us. Peace and blessings to the family. Job well done my brother.
R. Williams, MD
May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
Rest in peace. You will be missed.
LIKE FRANK SINATRA, YOU DID IT YOUR WAY; SYMPATHY TO CHAZ & EXTENDED FAMILY.
He will surely be missed, with the talent and skills this man had and his personailty he was GREAT at what ever he did. And I sad to hear he had CANCER , but that didn't stop he either he just kept going .WHAT A STRONG MAN AND HE STILL KEPT A SMILE ON HIS FACE I KNOW HEAVEN LET HIM IN. GOD BLESS AND KEEP A WATCHFUL EYE ON YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS. A TRULY GREAT MAN.
I am so deeply sad at the loss of this brilliant writer and, more importantly, a true gentleman. Even when he was very weak he held an elevator door open for me at the River East Movie Theatre. He was a class act and that is all too rare. God bless Roger and his family.
Roger's Words:" Why should I complain" will be a Catalyst to those who have illnesses. My deep condolences go out to your family and friends at this time. Find strength and comfort in knowing that NO problem is bigger than Jehovah's Holy Spirit Acts 10:38
The NY Times says Roger Ebert was a critic for the common man (and, presumably, woman). I can't think of when the death of a celebrity has affected me so deeply, as if someone in my family has passed on. Mr. Ebert touched all of us, and I treasure many of his reviews of my favourite movies. He surmounted many challenges, and I am sure that the support of Chaz was indispensable to him in his struggle. Thank you for the memories.
Thank You Roger
Chaz, GOD will give you Strength to get through this terrible loss
Thumbs up R.I.P. Mr.Ebert
May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.
Sorry for your loss. May you find comfort in the Hearer of prayer at this time. Psalm 65:2
A brilliant light has gone out. May God be with Chaz and the family in this time of grief.
RIP, Mr Ebert!
You will be dearly missed, but certainly never forgotten. The king is dead ...
Thank you for all you did for the average movie fan. Your reviews saved me countless hours and dollars viewing bad cinema. It was a pleasure watching someone who loved his work so much.
Our deepest sympathy to Chaz and the family. He will be sadly missed. My you R.I.P Roger, thank you for everything.
My prayers go out to the Ebert's family.God Bless.
I'm so sorry for your loss. May the God of comfort be with you and your family during your time of grief. My prayers go out to you and your family
mr Ebert is almost solely responsible for sending me on the path to being a film maker. Film has known no greater champion of the idea that good movies are "equal parts art and entertainment." am truly saddened by his departure, But his mark on the industry will never fade. My best to his wife and family in this rough time.
I feel as though I have lost a personal friend. Rest in peace. May God bring peace and comfort to your family. You truly were loved and will be missed.
Descanse en paz. Fue un gran hombre.
David and I always enjoyed your television show and looked forward to a new film.
Rest in Peace -seems so trite to say about Mr. Ebert. A man so eloquent with words deserves a more colorful send off! May you continue your lovely banter with Mr.Siskel again! You are admired for your wisdom, courage, use of language - with or without your voice! May more people learn about love and life through your words and actions. God Bless you Chaz during this difficult time. I hope your amazing and everlasting love consoles you at this time...
I am so saddened by the loss of this most wonderful and talented man. It is like losing a dear friend. I have many happy memories of watching Siskel and Ebert. I really appreciated Mr. Ebert's sensibilities and astute observations. It is like losing a dear friend. May you rest in peace and your loved ones find comfort. I suppose now, the Balcony is truly closed. You will be sorely missed.
Always enjoyed and appreciated Roger for his wisdom, kind manner and prolific writing. I will never forget his voice and smile. What an amazing person and such a loss I mourn, wish the best for all family and close friends, you will be missed! Gonna watch episodes of you and Gene right now, take care!
I'm a nobody but I enjoyed Mr. Ebert for many years. There is no TV or Movie without him. I thank his lovely wife for allowing us to share his brilliance .Missed already but we know you got you're wings years ago.
Siskel and Ebert..... Bread and butter.... Meat and potatoes ....they went together. Icons of the movies.... As well known as the actors. It saddened me when Gene passed and even more now with Roger. But, alas the reunion in the big movie house in the sky has begun and the reels are rolling as the debates resume. God bless his family. See you at the movies!
You will be greatly missed. Movies and certaily the movie reviews will never be the same.
Two great men died on April 4th. The first was Martin Luther King and then there was Roger Ebert. Sleep, sleep tonight...and may your dreams be realized.
I will miss your quick wit and my best to chaz!

I always loved to listen and watch Roger Ebert. He has been a constant in my life since I was little. I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2008, and since had both sides of thyroid removed, and the surgeons found 2 separate cancers. I hope I can fight my cancer with dignity ad Roger has, he is a wonderful man, Our prayers go out to his family.

To Mr. Elbert's wife and family. May you be comforted to know that many people weep with you for your loss. Mr. Ebert was such a brave and brilliant man who stood in the face of cancer and continued his work until he was done. Your loss is our loss. May Mr. Ebert rest in peace.

A great man, that gave us a great prospective
on the history of how film should be viewed and
much much more. Have been deeply touched by you. God bless you!
As we speak and sit back remembering Roger Ebert and the impact he made on the world of movie critiques, I am writing an essay on his legacy and how it has affected the film industry. Mr. Ebert was a visionary, a poet, a lover of the film medium, and more than anything else he was a fantastic writer in a place where mediocre writers at best were needed. My deepest condolences go out to his friends and family, for while the world has lost a legend, they have lost a loved one. So goodbye Roger, we'll see you at the movies.
May u rest in peace Mr. Ebert. The world has lost a great and tactful man and critic, but God has gained an angel. May God guide and bless your family and loved ones.
A devoted Ebert reader, I was excited to finally take his class. I was impressed by his intelligence and warmth. He eagerly engaged with everyone in class. I met my future husband in Roger's class, married 12 years. Thanks for so much, Roger!
Rest in peace Mr Ebert. You fought the good fight...Job well done.
Be bless i,m praying for his Wife &family you have my Sympathy he is resting in Heaven
Rest in peace Roger may God bless your Wife and family.i think of how he touch my life i always watch him on TV.be bless
I was stunned to hear the sad news of Roger's passing. It's like part of the floor fell out. I have come to rely on him over the years to steer me towards movies that were worth spending the increasingly precious moments on. I'd skim his review, and usually get the gist towards the end, and then if I watched the film went back afterwards to compare notes. I think I will have to take a break from watching films in his honor. Two thumbs up for you, Roger.
God speed to you Mr. Ebert. I grew up with your show and commentaries in Chicago. I hope you find peace in heaven.
I'msoterribly sad at the passing of Roger. Seems I've been reading his reviews all my life..not true however as we are the same age. I send my deepest sympathy to his family. He will be missed by the world. RIP Roger and fly with the angels.
I grew up loving you. RIP
Dear Chaz and family -- My deepest condolences on the passing of Roger. He was one of a kind. I still remember the interview Roger, John McHugh and I did with Sophia Loren in 1970 at her home in Padua, Italy. What an incredible afternoon it was. Rest with God, old friend.
Barry Felcher, Michigan City, Indiana
Loved you and Gene on Stern Show.
I pray God welcomes you home. I hope you and Gene Siskal are enjoying each other's company together again. May God bless and comfort your family in their time of sadness.

I lived there during the "mini-golden age of Chicago journalism". Came to SunTimes page when I heard of Roger's passing. He was the example of how to really live and enjoy life.
I am so sad, sad to my very core. Roger's reviews and blog entries have been treasures in my life. I am a pauper now. The world has lost a substantial light. Roger, you were truly loved and respected on a multitude of levels by multitudes. I hope you have watched a boat load of your favorite movies, had tons of lively discussions about them with the best and the brightest, and eaten as many White Castle burgers as you want!
It's so very sad. Our prayers go out to you and your family. Chaz I'm very sorry for hour loss.
I really fell in love with Roger Ebert way back then. But I really fell in love w/ him when he talked about his wife chaz.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
It seems impossible that you have gone from us...A film critic whose words and persona have become a part of our lives, as famous as the films you reviewed. Rest in Peace, Roger. You are irreplaceable
May you rest in peace, you will be remembered always.R.I.P.
Roger Ebert family,
Memory can tell us only what we were,
In company with those we loved;
It cannot help us find out what each of us,
Alone, must now become.
Yet, no person is really alone;
Those who live no more still echo
Within our thoughts and words,
And what they did has become
Woven into what we are. Let President Barack Obama know through his email, fax, letter, phone that Kimtraila has wished Roger Ebert family their sympathy.
God Bless, and God Bless America.
When GOD met you at the pearly gates he gave two thumbs up!
You are a passionate realist of everything you spoke of. You made commentating fun and informative. We thank you for all your years of service to not only helpfully criticize actors but to encourage as well. Rest in peace. Tell Siskel hi.
I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of Roger Ebert. He was a man of passion...passion for life which is why he endured despite unthinkable physical challenges and passion for film which he imbued and inspired us with. He made a difference, and he will be missed. May his wife be sustained and comforted by the deep affection and admiration for him shared by so many.
We will deeply miss Roger Ebert. Our deepest consolences to the family. He had a simplistic view of death, which the God has stated at Ecc. 9:5.
Roger was a wonderful talent and there will be a large hole in the world now that he is gone. My condolences and prayers to his wife, Chaz and to all his friends and family. I will miss his insights.
Thumbs up you will be missed! RIP Ebert!
Chicago has lost a wonderful icon and the world has lost a unique public intellectual in the passing of Roger Ebert. There is no one even remotely like him and probably never will be either. The depth of his thoughtful skill and artful communication was an irreplaceable treasure. He was a teacher, an example, and an inspiration.
Roger Ebert was someone very special; to say he will be missed is an understatement. His followers mourn his passing and celebrate his life. Thank you Roger for all the thoughts and all the words you shared with us. We learned from you. Rest in peace.
A Fan from the Beginning
You are Chicago in all it's wonder. You were our voice, our knowledge of media, stars, and hollywood. You are one of a kind. Thank you.

I had a class with him when he just the
started to work at Chicago Sun Times. He was an excellent teacher. He brought out the best in writing. God Bless,Him.
What a wonderful man. He said this is what I look like now, so he wasn't going to hide. An amazing lesson for all. I have enjoyed his movie reviews for 46 years now. I got to know if he liked a movie, I would also. I enjoyed watching him with Gene Siskel. And I enjoyed watching his loving and respectful relationship with his wife. This is a loss. He will be missed. And I'm glad he was here.
I was a fan. And I am sad today. Thank you for sharing.
The only film critic I ever truly trusted, and one of the great people in film I could look up to. God bless you, Roger. A great man.
I am so sorry to hear of Roger's passing. His reviews were always a beacon of clarity, humor and a profound love for movies. He dealt with his cancer with a lot of grace and determination. My sympathy to his family.

Roger's passing feels much like a dearly, loved uncle dying. Roger has enriched our lives and deepened our love of film. His writing was fueled by honesty, passion and raw talent. He wrote from his heart and his emotions and we all felt that. He will always be the greatest film authority that ever was. What a great gift we had for so many years. Our prayers are with his family and he will always be remembered as a special, talented, good man.
Dear Ebert Family hello there my name is Faith Tobin and he'll surely be missed very very much.my condolences's to the Family.and again I'm sorry for the loss.luv,Faith
What can I say but cancer has taken another one. Roger was born 8 days before my brother...a child of the war and of his era. I always enjoyed his biting wit, his keen insights. Prayers for his many friends, family and fans.
I just read Roger Ebert's words yesterday in the Chicago Times, and I was looking forward to his website. Rest In Peace and give Gene Siskel a thumbs up!
My deepest sympathies to Roger's family and friends. I am so grateful for all that he gave us. His light still brightly shines.
2 Thumbs-Up Rest In Peace From The Ludwicks

MY DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO YOU ALL WITH THE PASSING OF YOUR LOVED ONE. HE WILL BE GREATLY MISSED. MAY YOU FIND COMFORT IN KNOWING OTHERS CARE & SHARE YOUR LOSS. GOD BLESS.
The world is a much poorer place without this man's voice, heart and mind. Ephemeral is the presence of greatness, but permanent is its impact on society. You will be missed Roger!
I watched Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel, when they first started, "At The Movies." I was saddened a few years ago, when Gene died, and now Roger. Two great guys who may have had different opinions, or the same, but always told it like it is. Guess they will be watching the movies being made and put in film form. They will have the best seats in the house. sure am going to miss Roger, as I did, Gene.
He will be missed by so many! Thank you Roger for all the insightful reviews. I never went to a movie unless you gave it a "thumbs up." My condolences to family, friends, colleagues, and fan club. He'll be greatly missed!!!!
You will be missed, Roger. Many, many thumbs up, for you and all that you did for us and the movies. My condolences to Chaz, and family, friends, co-workers, and fans. You have an extra special seat in the balcony now.
To Chaz and the Ebert Family:
While many of us will remember Roger for his movie reviews, I feel he should be remembered just as much for the courage and dignity he demonstrated the last several years. Nothing kept him down and out from delivering his opinion and words on films. And it may just be what kept him going, while others would have surrendered.
His devotion to Chaz and his family are also to be applauded. The support and encouragement you all gave him during his struggle was the best medicine he could have received.
We will miss him but we will never forget him! Heartfelt condolences to you all.
Rest in peace sweet angel
This message is to acknowledge the profound sadness I feel at the loss of an inspirational, prolific, and brilliant journalist.
Roger, you will truly be missed. Our heartfelt sympathy to Chaz and the rest of your family. My family and I still look at the pictures of you with Sammy Cahn, Fred Williamson, and Chaz, when you came in to dine at Arrivederci on Halsted many years ago. God bless.
this world has become a little empty today for people like me. the tweets stopped. the blog stopped. cinema will look so different from here on.. ..RIP you beautiful soul....
We are so sorry to hear of the passing of our friend Roger Ebert.
We hope Mrs. Chaz Ebert and the rest of the family know we loved him and will miss him.
May GOD continue to bless & keep the family in HIS loving care.
He was a very nice and fun person. We are missing him already. May he rest in peace of our Savior Jesus Christ.
I give you two thumbs up Roger Ebert! Rest in Peace, preferable near a computer so you can write for all those you will meet there. Chaz, my sincerest empathy to you and your family. I have watched him for many years, always enjoyed him I hope that the powers that be will hold you and the Ebert family in their hands to comfort you.
You were a large part of the reason I decided to become a film-maker. I don't yet know how that experiment will turn out but I do know that my life has been made far richer by your writing. You were someone a more metaphysical person than I might term a great soul, possessed of decency, magnanimity and a deep appreciation for beauty. Beyond that, you had the skill to bring those qualities forth from prose. My thoughts are with Chaz and the rest of your family and friends. I hope the admiration for you that we all now express brings them solace, for if a life can be meaningful, yours certainly was.
MR EBERT REST IN PEACE .AND MRS EBERT MAY YOU FIND COMFORT KNOWING YOU HAVE A STAR THAT WILL SHINE OVER YOU ALWAYS .
My Very Best To Mr. Ebert's Family At This Time. Thank You, Mr. Ebert, For Your Clear Insight & Valuable, Plausible Criticisms Of The Movies. See You On The Other Side, Some Beautiful Day.
Roger Ebert is the Greatest Critic in America's of All-Time in Movies.
My condolences to the family. He will be sorely missed by us, the public - but in no way could our sense of loss even approximate the family's. Wishing them the strength to get through the coming days.
Roger loved Illinois and Chicago and made
his fellow natives proud. My condolences to the always strong Chaz, his loved ones and
friends. He was a friend through his
work to us all.
Some of the best tandems of all time. Huntley and Brinkley, McNeil and Lehrer, Siskel and Ebert.
Two thumbs up !!
He will be missed for his honesty as a movie critic. May the God of comfort give his wife the strength to endure during this time of distress. Psalms 145:18,19
I've been a fan since you were on Siskel & Ebert and have relied on your film reviews as the benchmark par excellence. RIP Mr. Ebert.
You were a great man, you will be missed.
A little guy in a little Ontario town who loves movies...and I mean love movies as much as Roger...will miss him dearly. Whenever a new movie came out...I would "google" the title and place Roger's name beside it...to read what THE critic had to say about it. I may not always agree...and oh I so wished I could sit down over a hot tea and discuss a few movies or two. Thanks Chicago for sharing a friend with the world.
D. Edwards, Wallaceburg, Ontario, Canada
Indeed, the soul of a poet, and an insiration to budding and established writers. My condolences to Chazz and the family.
Such sad news. My deepest symphathy to his family. He was a great man and will be missed.

Will miss your trenchant and witty reviews. Now, I'll start re-reading all of your books to remind me.

I love movies so much because of Roger & Gene's show. My deepest sympathies to his family. Thank you Roger for all the great reviews and your "thumbs up" !
Roger, you were a newspaperman's newspaperman. So honored to have been your Sun-Times colleague for 26 years.
Here's to the Bright One's Brightest One!
You made the movies more enjoyable and the world a better place. May you always have the best seat in the house.
To Chaz and the Ebert family,
My deepest sympathy to the entire family on the passing of the greatest critic the movie world has ever known. I have no doubt that Gene Siskel and Roger are talking film in heaven.
With much sympathy.
A great voice of film criticism, but especially, a brave man in the face of illness. An inspiration to me. Fare well.
Please accept our sincere sympathy on your loss. We enjoyed listtening to his reviews. We will miss him.
God Bless You, and say hi to Gene Siskel for me. TWO THUMBS UP !!!!
May Chaz and the entire Ebert family find peace in knowing that he was loved by many.. (Born and raised in Chicago)
I was so very lucky to have been a "student" of Roger Ebert for years in his film class at the University of Chicago. What a brilliant, observant, and at times, a very funny man he was.
I met Roger Ebert in 1974 when I began working in the movie business in our beloved Second City. Years later, when I worked at a small non profit that focused on helping US libraries learn about & acquire independent films, Roger agreed to be on our advisory board. He really wanted to help us. We designed a collection using his Great Movies selections and libraries loved his collection. What mensch he was to our tiny grassroots library project.
Roger will be greatly missed not only for his bravery and grace in facing his serious illnesses, but for his brillant writings about all things including life itself.
I have no doubt that he and Gene are hotly debating some matter right now.
To Chaz, who I recently and briefly talked to after a movie:
God bless you and keep you in the palm of his hand. Your sweetheart will always be with you, the memories, the laughs and the love.
You made heaven on earth Roger. You give me strength. I love you.See you at the crossroad. Karen
Watched you through your whole career. You are missed and will continue to be so.
Dear Roger, How am I ever going to trust what movie I might or might not enjoy again???? Your eloquent and analytical ,but still very humane and fair, reviews have been my faithful guide for so very many years now........you felt like a friend..........you will be missed!!! Rest in peace, and much sympathy to your dear wife and family.
Very saddened to hear this news. I always watched your show and read your reviews. You will be greatly missed. May God bless and keep you.
My condolences to the family of Roger Ebert. I have been a fan for many years. Would have loved to have had dinner with Siskel and Ebert and talk movies with them. Mr Ebert was one of a kind. He will be greatly missed.
I watched Siskel & Ebert on Channel 11 from its inception with my dad, who is now dying of Alzheimer's. Thank you, Roger, for many good memories, both at the movies and as well as with my dad at home. Chaz, my deepest sympathies for you. You are one classy lady.
Greatness taken for granted. I am sad for myself and us all.
To the family of Mr Ebert, my thoughts and prayers are with.
Farewell to a man and an icon.
Roger , You were the best and set the gold standard to which all others after you will be measured. See you at the movies!
Roger, I loved your program. So knowledgeable about actors and screenplay and what gave a movie substance and what didnt. One of the greats, truly.
Always wished I could thank him in person. His reviews and recommendations enriched my life and helped us all to avoid wasting our limited time and resources, as our family income was lower and we had little of either to spare. Thank you Roger Ebert!
Thank you for being "you."
May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.
An American Icon that has now passed, blessings to the family.
To Roger Ebert,
You were a very good critic for the show at the movies. My prayers go to you and your family. Lisa Weiner
Condolences to the family and friends of one of the most prolific University of Illinois grads.
My heart goes out to the Ebert family. Pray that the peace of God be with you all at this time.
How very sad to lose The Wonderful Roger Ebert. I could always trust his reviews and knew I would have a great time at the movies if Roger said I would. I often think as I begrudgenly watch a movie on TV, Rogers' statement about viewing movies: "Movies are made to be seen in a large dark room surrounded by strangers". How true. Much love to Chaz and other family & friends.
Just a remarkable man. His blog went far beyond film and showed him to be a man of remarkable decency and compassion. While cancer took away his ability to speak, it never silenced his voice.
Be blessed, Ebert Family. We will treasure his memory. His legacy will endure.
Thank you, Roger, for sharing your gift with us all these years.
I learned much more than an appreciation for movies from you. Rest in peace.
I have enjoyed Roger Ebert's reviews so much for 40 years and almost always totally agreed with his insights on the art of film. He will be so much missed!
We'll miss you !
I will miss your writing dearly.
mr. Roger My prayers to your family say hello to my sons Francis n Anthony while you enjoy a movie together that is if you dont give it a thumbs down but all movies get a thumbs up where 3 live RIP
I already miss you, Roger, and your abundant talent and humanity. But your generous praise of my performance in a movie will live with me always.
Although most of my favorite films were made when you were too young to review, I always read your work (and saw a few pictures as a result) because I so enjoyed your writing. You will be missed.
I ran into Roger in the mid '90's at the Denver airport. Emboldened by a few cocktails I felt compelled to tell him the story of my friend's appearance in "Eight Men Out". He was very gracious and appeared to be genuinely interested in my drunken tale. RIP Mr. Ebert.
Your critic on movies was awesome. Helped us figure out what to see and what to skip. You will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers to your Beautiful Wife Chaz. Rest in Peace
One of my earliest memories as a child was watching you and Gene on TV reviewing the movies I was most excited to see. Peace be with you, sir.
I grew up with you on TV in Chicago. You will be sadly missed.
So sorry to hear this sad news. We faithfully watched Siskel and Ebert each week on PBS and enjoyed every show. They were a great team. Heartfelt condolences to his family.
We will miss you Roger.
Mr. Ebert was a gentleman and a scholar. His contributions to the human experience will be neither forgotten nor repeated. I will miss his work greatly. He understood art in a unique and meaningful way. He elevated discourse and gave the medium of film its due respect as an art form. Mr. Ebert, thank you.
The first review of yours that I read was for the film "I am Curious, Yellow." I was struck by your trenchant wit - and now I realize that at the time, you were only two years older than me! I've been relying on your movie-going advice ever since. I will miss it - and I will miss you.
Thank you, Roger, for all that you gave us.
Roger's passing leaves a hole in my life and is a loss to rational, intelligent people everywhere. He will be sorely missed. My condolences to his loved ones.
The balcony is officially closed. RIP Roger.
Thank you, Roger, for sharing your passion for the media and arts. Those who have followed your work are enriched by your contributions.
siskel and ebert together again, forever.
Thumbs up to a great writer, critic and person...you will be missed especially in Chicago, thanks for all the reviews. I went to movies based on your reviews. God Bless
I vividly recall so much from the "Tuesday Night at the Movies" film appreciation course Mr. Ebert taught at NIU in the mid-70's, especially his explanation of the technical and artistic elements of "Citizen Kane". That class changed how I viewed and reacted to films and I was particularly delighted that 'I knew him when'. Thank you and peace to your wife.
I was heart broken to learn of the passing of beloved Roger and send my deepest condolences.
I wish to say "thank you for sharing such a remarkable human being with the world. Roger gave a courageous fight with his health issues. Such a gentleman and much respected. I know he felt very blessed to have such a wonderful family."
May your faith embrace your shattered hearts with much needed comfort as each day approaches.
Please take care and know I will keep you in my prayers !
Thank you, Mr. Ebert, for enriching so many lives.
The balcony is closed. Will miss him. My condolences to Roger's family and loved ones.
Taking your class for 7 yrs. and getting to know you was one highlights of my life. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm and opening my eyes.
I can't begin to say what an influence Roger Ebert had on my life. Growing up outside of Chicago, I would eagerly wait in my pajamas for the start of "Sneak Previews" every Saturday. Then, as I was older, I'd watch "At The Movies." He helped nurture in me a love for movies that led to me majoring in Film in college. While in college, I received as a present his book "Roger Ebert's Video Companion," a giant tome which contained not just short blurbs but full-length reviews of each movie, many of which are wonderful essays on the nature of art and life. After reading hundreds of his reviews, I began to feel like I came to understand Roger Ebert the man. He was a demanding viewer, but not an elitist the way Siskel could sometimes be. He judged each film by how well it accomplished what it was trying to do. He was at his heart a humanist, and he praised the movies that could not only entertain us, but also point out truths about the human condition, and use the transformative power of art to ennoble us. Mr. Ebert, I hope St. Peter gives you a big two thumbs up! RIP.
RIP Roger. You will be missed. Thanks for all the movie reviews & sharing them with us. May your wife & family find comfort in wonderful memories.
Our loss. Wishing peace and comfort to Mrs Ebert.
RIP Mr. Ebert....Thank you for all the wonderful movie reviews...and opening your heart to us during your time of crisis..your life was inspirational...you will be missed...
Save me a seat in the Big Balcony, Roger, you taught me that the movie happens inside your head and life. God bless you and Keep you.
Good bye from a fellow Illini. We will forever refer to your reviews to settle cinema debates.
Roger, you taught us all how to live through adversity.Condolences to Chaz, family and friends. You will be missed!
M. T. Harvey,Ill.
I watched Siskel and Ebert growing up in Chicago. Now I look for your online review every time I watch a movie. Will miss you. Thank you, Mr. Ebert, for sharing yourself through your writings. RIP
It was Gene Siskel & Roger Ebertthat caused me to sit up and take notice of film from a young age. Not just because of their respected opinions, but because of how fun their show was. I thought it would never be the same when Gene passed away, and yet Roger continued. His passion and love for film was readily evident whether it was on his shows or in written reviews. And best of all, his reviews were funny!
His epic battle with a hideous disease was legendary and courageous. To all of Roger's family, friends and Sun Times colleagues, my deepest sympathies. My hope is that your happy memories will bring you comfort from your grief.
He will be missed by all of us who enjoyed and respected his opinions.
RIP Roger Ebert. I have enjoyed your movie critiques for years. You will be missed here in Chicago
You were the best, i watched you since i was a teenager. You will greatly missed! You kept on going even stronger after your cancer. God Bless you and your lovely wife.
My deepest condolences to Chaz and the rest of Roger's family, he will be missed.
Roger, From your days at the U of I you were destined to join the great pantheon of Chicago writers. Now you have joined Gene, Studs, Mike, Nelson and all the rest. Your intelligence and grace was a remarkable gift you shared with all of your readers and viewers. Thank you.
Really enjoyed Ebert and his views on movies.
My sympathy to Chaz and the rest of Roger's family. And too all of us who will miss him.
"I like to sit further back," Ebert says of his seat on the left aisle of the back row. An optometrist once told him that from the back he can see the entire screen without moving his head. He was right. 2 Thumbs Up for the advice.
Thank you for being my guide in a dark theater and in a dark world.
Was there from the beginning. You were both great and now the partnership has ended. RIP
I would trust your reviews to the point that I would not see a movie unless it had at least 3 stars or 2 thumbs up !! After moving from Chicago to Tucson, AZ. I referred to your web site every day.
I am a thyroid cancer survivor and you have given me so much inspiration and hope - may you rest in peace.
To The Ebert Family: Please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of Roger. While I was always a movie buff, it was Roger's informative reviews and books that made me truly appreciate them even more. I was fortunate enough to run into him in front of the old CBS-TV studios on McClurg Court in Chicago, nearly 20 years ago and he engaged me in a 20 minute conversation on movies. I felt honored and privileged to be in his company. It is a conversation I remember to this day. And he was so respectful and considerate. We are all so fortunate to have learned from him. I was even more fortunate to just meet him once! May you cherish the many fond memories you have of him. Like the films he loved, those memories will live forever.
You will be greatly missed. R.I.P.
The world will miss you so. Rest in peace Sir Roger.
I will miss your reviews and my deepest sympathy to Chaz. May her memories of your years shared fill her heart with warmth as she recalls and shares the special love you shared. RIP
What a terrible loss for everyone! I will miss his love of movies, his wonderful writing and his joie de vivre. Sympathy to his family and friends.
Peace, love and blessings to you, Roger. You are truly a gift to this planet.
His was the only voice I respected and wanted to hear as a critic. My greatest sympathies are with your family.
Oh, how we all will miss you, Roger. I have loved movies all my life, but I "learned" movies in Roger's U of C classes, where his knowledge & insights changed my life experience. I personally walked "The Perfect London Walk" at least 4 times, the 1st time in pouring rain, with great joy, and yes it was different each time. And of course I loved all your writings, and thoughts. Thank you for everything you gave us - and it's a huge everything!
REST IN PEACE ROGER, your greatness will be dearly missed by Many. My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire family. R.I.P.
Condolences to the family of Roger Ebert. He was a great person. He will be missed by many.
When it comes to writing I'm all thumbs... and they're all up for you on this sad, sad day.
Thank you Robert, for all the years
Thanks for the memories, Roger. God bless your wife and family.
In his review for "Umberto D", Mr. Ebert wrote of an old, penniless pensioner, "Perhaps his best luck is simply that he has the inner strength to endure misfortune without losing self-respect. It is said that at one level or another, Chaplin's characters were always asking that we love them. Umberto doesn't care if we love him or not. That is why we love him. You were loved, Roger. You were a mile marker in my life.
You were our guiding light in the vast wasteland of American movies. You were honest and down-to earth, as if you were giving advice to a friend. We trusted your judgment and were seldom disappointed. Movies won't be the same without you.
When looking through what seemed to be a plethora of films to choose from for my Friday Saturday Night film to be chosen.... Roger made a big difference in my life..... his approval made it possible for me to select from maybe a half a dozen films in comparison to the 35 that were out there at that moment..... His insights made the difference in my selection for the video rental and eventually became video purchases. Love and prayers to your family Roger.I will genuinely miss you as I did Gene back in the day. Your powerful poetic insight would push through much of the weakness in the film industry.... And with that said made people work harder to get it right ....so thank you... Thank you for your creative inside track... to what so many people around the world love ....A NIGHT AT THE MOVIES--JOEY PAUL keyboards for Tommy Cash and The Cash Crew Band
RIP, Roger. Years ago, my late wife and I took your "Perfect London Walk" -- and we felt you were guiding us the whole way, with wit, humor and insight. The balcony is... closed.
RIP Mr Ebert. Your voice was one of fairness in a sea of snobbery and pretentiousness. You are an inspiration.
Rest in peace, Roger. May your family find comfort soon.
You were so brilliant, so funny, so thoughtful. The world has lost a strong, lovely man. Movies will never be the same for me, and for many.
I didn't always agree with his reviews, but I always paid attention to them. Always seemed a true gentleman. RIP
I have followed and loved Mr. Ebert for the past 30 years. My prayers go out to his wife and all family and fans.
I reached a point years ago where Roger's was the only opinion of a movie I was interested in. My guess is he would have been more puzzled by that than flattered.
He will be missed.
As a little girl growing up in the suburbs of Chicago, I watched every show and hung on your every word! You sparked a lifelong interest in the magical world of film, for millions of us. Your brilliance and eloquence will remain a huge part of American culture forever... Thank you... You get a thumbs up, way up!
So saddened to hear this. You were the best. The balcony is now closed.
Dear Chaz, I am sad, too.
my only solace is knowing there is so much you've written I've not yet read. thank you for sharing with us, and condolences to Chaz.
I am so sorry for your lost...I am a native Chicagoan and always watched Siskel and Ebert. May Roger rest in the arms of the Angels.....giving his take on what Heaven is like.
HEARING ABOUT ROGER'S PASSING THIS AFTERNOON HAS MADE ME SO SAD. I WILL NEVER FORGET TWEETING OUT TO ROGER DURING A TRIP TO THE VIRGINIA THEATER IN HIS HOMETOWN AND HOPING FOR A REPLY. I ALSO WILL THINK OF ROGER EVERY TIME I SEE TWO OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES EVER MADE- THE WALL, AND APOCALYPSE NOW, I WILL THINK ABOUT EBERTFEST AND HOW EXCITED I WAS TO ATTEND WHILE IN CHAMPAIGN, IL. THE STATE OF ILLINOIS HAS LOST ONE OF ITS GREAT SONS TODAY. REST IN PEACE ROGER, AND SEE YOU AT THE MOVIES.
Thumbs up to the best movie critic of all time! You will truly be missed.
Roger was very kind to me the only time we met. He introduced me to several of my favorite films and directors. More importantly, he made film watching fun.
Roger you will be missed R.I.P.
Rest in peace Roger a true legend he will be soarly missed.
My thoughts go to Chaz and family. Mr. Ebert was my reference in cinema. I will truly miss his writing.
Roger, though I never met you, you brought great joy to me, and intensified and illuminated an already passionate love of film.
Your voice will be forever heard and missed.
RIP. I grew up watching him and Siskel. My condolences to his wife, friends and family.
Rest in peace, Mr. Ebert. Thank you for your unique and timeless insights into films which are part of the fabric of our lives. May God's loving arms hold your family and friends a little more tightly during the difficult days ahead.
What a loss for the world! Such a sad day. Words fail me now, but I am comforted to know I can always re-read his many, many great critiques, stories, essays, and blogs over and over again. My heart hurts knowing he's gone. Sincerest condolences to Chaz and Roger's family, friends and legions of admirers.
God Bless the Ebert Family. RIP Roger Ebert. God's peace be with you.
Our hearts go out to the entire Ebert Family. Much love to all of you.
Roger Ebert, my life was lighter and brighter because of you. I would laugh in delight at your reviews and found that even you, my friend, were starry-eyed when it came to those whose work you admired. Thank you, and may your family and friends be comforted by your presence in their hearts.
May you rest in peace. I will always admire you for your integrity as a critic and for the grace you exhibited as you dealt with physical ailments. I enjoyed watching your shows with Gene as much as I enjoy remembering them now. You will always be a son of Chicago and I will miss your writing.
Condolences to Chaz and the rest of your family and friends.
My condolences to his family. He will missed enormously.
I watched a lot of movies because of those thumbs of yours. Positive vibes to you and yours - Zay
Goodbye Roger. I grew up reading your movie reviews. I will miss you.
Will miss your work terrbily.
Rest in Peace in the eternal movie theaters up there. You changed the way we all looked at film, and encourage dialogue and discussion after watching it. We all got our Ebertcism because of you.
Grief. Grief. Grief. I feel sorrow over the loss of a man I never met. Roger, I believe your every accolade was well-deserved. I will miss your columns, your spirit, your humanity.
Will truly miss you, just as I missed your partner when he passed. I watched you show all the time.
Thank You so much Roger. I gained a greater appreciation of Film because of you. Godspeed and good journey.
I well remember the evenings at Riccado's at which I was often present. Roger wasn't 't the BIG star then that he was later to become, but he was already well known, well liked, and an integral important part of the seventies in that redoubtable drinking spot.
Roger, you will be missed! You will always be remembered as a rare breed of great man. God speed.
Rest in peace..Prayers to your family
Peace be with you for today you sit at the right hand of The Father.
Thanks for sharing your love of film and love of life with me.
I will treasure Roger Ebert's memory! My heartfelt condolences to his wonderful wife Chaz and his family, friends & co-workers.
Rest in peace to a legend among film critics. Two thumbs up to all that you've accomplished, Roger. You will be greatly missed.
The sad truth is Ebert is irreplaceable; there is no one out there who gave as much of themselves, as artfully as he did to what he loved. In my own love of film I saw Roger as a kindred spirit and appreciated his insights and passion profoundly. He'll always hold a special place in my heart. RIP roger e..
This man did more for film, arguably, than anyone in the twentieth century, save, perhaps, for Welles, Hitchcock, and their peers. In Roger Ebert resided both brilliance and humility, a rare combination. His life was our blessing.
Sending God's Peace to his wife & family.
I'm a 24 year old, Northern Irish film critic, that writes for a local newspaper. That's a direct result of watching, reading and consuming all things Ebert - his influence was wide spread. My deepest condolences to his wife Chaz and family.
My wife and met Roger and his lovely wife at Rancho LaPuerta several years ago and had an opportunity to talk with them for a few moment. As I said to him then, I owe him for recommending so many hours of enjoyment that I would otherwise never have experienced. I'm shocked at the suddenness (to me at least) of his passing. My most sincere condolences.
I loved you and have a great amount of respect for you. Rest, kind sir.
Absolutely one of a kind and a gift to journalism and movie analysis. Thank you, Roger. You'll never be equalled.
Deepest condolences to the Ebert family. I greatly enjoyed At the Movies from an early age and, although I didn't always agree with Roger's reviews, I always found them to be thought provoking and greatly appreciated the obvious passion for film making. RIP
May he Rest in Peace. A remarkably decent human being.
R.iI.P. Rogert I really enjoyed your reviews of movies. You will be missed by so many movie lovers. So long to a great movie critic.
Loved your writing and passion for films. You will be missed
I can't believe I will never again get the distinct pleasure of reading one of Roger's well-thought reviews. Roger actually helped shape the way I view film and what makes a great movie great. The entertainment world has lost a great voice of reason and impeccable logic today. Rest in Peace Mr. Ebert, you will be missed.
Expressing my deepest sympathy to the family. Mr. Ebert made an everlasting impact in his field and may your fond memories of him help you to endure the days ahead as you rest your hope in God's future promise to do away with sickness forever. Isaiah 33:24.
The world, especially Chicago, will miss you. You were such a prolific writer even in your years after your surgeries. I used to watch you and Siskel on At the Movies religiously every week. I missed Siskel but will miss you even more. My prayers are with your family now.
A wonderful teacher and the best damn film critic who has ever lived. Thank you Roger for so many years of laughter and enjoyment reading your reviews and books. My heartfelt condolences to Chaz and your families.
Roger, you changed the way a lot of moviegoers selected movies to view and affected their tastes as well. Chazz, you had a principled spouse of great integrity.
A historic figure lost. Our hearts go out to the family.
Truly a tragic loss. Rest in peace and God bless.
Goodbye Mr. Ebert. Didn't always agree with you reviews, but ALWAYS respected you. The film world will be a lot smaller without you in it. RIP, sir.
Thank you not only for your film reviews, but showing us how to live with a disease such as cancer. You defined "courageous." Rest in Peace.
The world is a smaller place in your absence. You inspired many of us in ways that are difficult to adequately express. Rest in peace.
A life well lived. Godspeed Roger.
I bid a sad but fond farewell to the best movie critic ever! I saw you the very first time you appeared on TV in Chicago and have followed you ever since. You will be missed.
Watched you all of my adult life. Will miss your wit and drive. RIP.
Yours were the reviews that mattered to me past and present. I will miss you as I would a friend.
Good night, Mr. Ebert. You will be missed by all of us who loved you.
Thank you for challenging us in how to think about movies, ideas and reflectively engaging with them.
To the late, great Mr. Ebert. I remember you fondly from my childhood. It is such a great honor to have lived within the the years of your life. I am a better person because of it. Rest peacefully.
I sat in dark theaters with the rest of my film class, taking notes, pretending to be you. Thank you for your gifts, and may your family and friends find peace.
My wife and I have enjoyed your work for decades. We always made a point of being in front of the television when "At The Movies" appeared. Your animated banter with Gene Siskel was pure delight. We seldom went to the movies without consulting you first!!!
What a true professional whose passion for cinema was unsurpassed. You get "two thumbs up" Mr. Ebert.
Two thumbs up for a wonderful career. I enjoyed your reviews. My thoughts and prayer our with your family.
Roger I will miss your honest and real persona in a world of pretend and corporate personalities. Your blogs were always interesting and thought provoking to read as well as your movie reviews. I greatly appreciate your character you exhibited during your long cancer battle and will miss you. I feel fortunate that I will still be able to read and watch your amazing body of life work.
R.I.P. Roger. Everything you wrote was a pleasure to read, and the strength with which you shouldered your burdens made you a roll model for us all.
What a remarkable life! RIP.
Loved you, will miss you, will think of you every time I reread Tarzan Triumphant! Profound sympathy to Chaz.
Mr. Ebert - thank you for your contributions - not only in the movie theater but also in the grand theater of life. You won the battle against cancer because you never let it beat you.
my husband and i watched your show and followed you faithfully.RIP.love and peace to your wife and family
Two thumbs up for a wonderful man. RIP Roger, we'll still save you the aisle seat. My prayers for your family.
So sad to hear of Roger's passing. I never met Roger but I feel like I've lost a friend. The world is certainly a better place for what he contributed to it.
You are a one-of-a-kind sort of individual, and so it will be difficult, if not impossible to replace you. You will be missed on this side of the divide, but I, for one, will be looking forward to meeting you in person when I cross over. Thank you for all that you were and all that you contributed to all of us. And to Chaz, I'm glad he had you, as you added the element of love to his life. How fortunate you two were to find each other in life. I am very, very sorry for your loss.
You were the best Roger Ebert, now is the time to rest and be at peace for we shall ALWAYS remember the best.
We have lost an American talent. May Roger's joyful philosophy be an example to all.
You were a dear man and we will miss you.
Rest in peace. Your literary voice will be missed
he never made a dull moment....and also made people think....thank you for that.
The best! Roger Ebert was a man of wit and integrity. We will not see many more like him. My sympathies to his wife and family. Thanks for everything Mr, Ebert!
He was the first movie critic that really connected with me way back in Gary, Indiana in 1967. He was a superb writer and man.I believe Ebert and Siskel are already reviewing together again in Heaven. Rest in Peace.
Remembering meeting you when Todd McCarthy, Ken Levis and I were in high school and we took you -- our favorite movie critic -- to lunch. One of the great days of our teens. You always wrote on a high level, drawing on the outside world instead of staying sealed exclusively within the confines of moviedom.
I used to run into Roger now and again on my lunchtime walks, he always had a kind word or two for a fan. RIP Roger.
Thumbs Up for a great life....you will be missed.
Rarely agreed but always enjoyed watching & reading. RIP
My sympathy to your wife, Chaz, and your entire family. I loved watching your show with Gene and always respected your opinions about the movies you reviewed. You fought the good fight. Rest in peace, Roger.
A bright and insightful light in the entertainment world and in his beloved city on Lake Michigan ~ Chicago, IL ~ has been forever dimmed with the passing of Roger Ebert. His brilliant assessment of all things entertainment was peerless, and the world is somehow diminished by his passing. RIP Roger Ebert ~ your long legacy will live on in our hearts and minds and eyes and ears.
Thanks Roger for enhancing my love of movies and holding those people who make them accountable. You were a great critic and you will be missed.
You will be greatly missed for your writings, your insights and your humanity. Condolencss to the Ebert family.
Great movie reviews. Hope you see your longtime partner on the other side. Thumbs up!
I miss you already Roger. You are irreplaceable.
God speed, Roger. And my sympathy to Chas. It's been a long haul, but you both handled it with dignity, tenaciousness, and humor. God bless you and all your family.
I will miss you so much. So, so, much. And even more than that. ((**))
My condolences to Chaz and the family! God Bless!
We will miss reviews of movies to come...but revel in the life you shared with us. The gates are opened wide for you Mr. Ebert!
Rest in Peace and you will surely be missed by all.
Rest in Peace Roger, thank you for everything you've done for the world of film review. You will never be forgotten.
What a loss to the film industry...He was an amazing critic/writer and gave it his all right up until death.
R.I.P. Roger Ebert. God Bless you. You fought a very good fight! Sympathies to the Ebert family.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful insight with us. Rest in peace!
Thank you for being my guide through the wondrous world of cinema.
Thank you for everything you gave us and for inspiring me to live life to the fullest no matter what. Have a safe journey tot he other side.
An excerpt from your review of Twilight actually helped me fix my life:
"Should a woman fall in love with a man because he desires her so much? Men seem to think so. It's not about the woman, it's about the man's desire."
Those three sentences helped me end a toxic relationship I was in.
Thank you, Roger.
Death be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadfull, for, thou art not so,
For, those, whom thou think'st, thou dost overthrow,
Die not, poor death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be,
Much pleasure, then from thee, much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee do go....
One short sleep past, we wake eternally
And death shall be no more; death, thou shalt die.
....John Donne 1610
Happy, Happy Trails and the best popcorn heaven can offer you, sir! I grew up watching you and Gene Siskel's show in Chicago... Thank you for all you gave everyone during your time on Earth, and my love & deepest condolences to those nearest and dearest to you...
Greatest film critic of all time and a nice guy. Very sad.
We always waited to see a film until AFTER you had given it a positive review!
You'll be missed.
We are going to miss you and your reviews.
Godspeed Roger. Your reviews will be sadly missed by wife and I.
A true gentleman and poet. Thank you
Rest in peace, Roger. You were one in a gazillion!
I grew up watching you in Hyde Park Chicago, and was just reading yesterday that you would be taking a leave...I look forward to reading your blog. Thank you. Cara
god bless the best film critic and person
who taught us so much about life
Your wisdom is going to be missed.
Diane C. Garcia
Mr. Ebert, you've touched many, and are missed already. Best wishes to your family.
Ebert family, my heartfelt condolences are extended to all of you. I was truly saddened when I saw the obituary. Words cannot express my sorrow. The Bible holds out a hope for our dead love ones. Revelation 21:3,4 tell us that soon death will be done away with. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
Roger, may you rest in peace. My prayers for your family.
Good bye old friend. I grew up listening to you. The world will be a less interesting place without you around.
Thanks for all the great movies you recommended throughout the years. Either on TV or on your terrific website!
Roger changed the way I watch movies. I loved his erudite but commonsensical way of articulating his observations and experience of movies. I loved the way he sometimes suffered no foolishness in film making, and how he made clear that the real crime of bad movies is in their waste of precious resources and time. Yet I also got the sense that later in his writing career, he found more compassion and forgiveness for some directors' mistaken efforts and ham-handed "experiments." Roger's ideas about good films and style helped shape the way I teach my students to watch films for our classes, so even in just this one small instance, out here in the desert expanses of eastern New Mexico, Roger's influence and good work lives on in the eyes and minds of readers and filmgoers in all corners of the world.
Rest in peace, Roger. May your light never be extinguished in the eyes of those who knew and loved you, nor the eyes of your followers
Roger your winsome words will be missed.
Wishing your wife Chaz and the rest of your family and friends peace during this difficult time. May your memories bring you smiles in your hearts.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for ever for teaching me to love those great pieces of art called great movies, I'll never forget you
Roger truly knew the value of the written and spoken word. My heartfelt condolences to his wife and family.
You were my favorite film critic. We shared many a great movie. You will be infinitely missed.
God Speed. I have always enjoyed your reviews. Thanks for sharing your passion for the movies for the rest of us.
From one who had ties with you. Those were the good old days Roger!
It was a pleasure to work with you and get to know you. You were a kind man. May you rest in peace. And now, the balcony is closed.
They both were fun to watch since the 70's.
GOD BLESS U ROGER WHAT A LIFE....
Your passion for movies and storytelling inspired me. Thank you.
HE WAS LIKE A FRIEND I NEVER GOT TO MEET,MY HEART IS VERY HEAVY
You were a Chicago institution. You wrote your film reviews with integrity and never pandered. We will miss you.
God bless Roger Ebert, perhaps the best film critic of all time. His were the only reviews that held any weight in my house. He loved movies and life itself, he was a great inspiration to many, and he will be greatly missed. RIP Mr. Ebert.
Dear Chaz, I have such fond memories of the time my friend and I met you and Roger at a screening. You had both returned from safari and life was good. Roger was such a wonderful man and he has left an incredible legacy. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Sending you much love.
Peace. You and Gene have a lot of catching up to do.
Rest In Peace..a true Chicago Legend...
No one could write a negative review the way you could --- enough to make one look out for potentially lousy films that you would hopefully apply your skills to. I'll miss having a voice that I could trust.
Please accept our sympathy on the loss of this fine, brave man.
To the wife and family I'm sorry for your loss...
I light a candle to signify that the light in the great city-by-the-lake Chicago, IL is much dimmer today with the passing of the iconic film reviewer and scion of the entertainment business Roger Ebert. He will always be remembered fondly by all of us native Chicagoans, and I daresay by the world at large. At least now Siskel & Ebert are together again giving their 'heavenly' reviews from above ... RIP Roger Ebert, now and always :(
I very much admired your courage.
I will keep fond memories of your movie review show: Siskel and Ebert.
May you find peace and comfort with our heavenly Father.
My husband and our prayers go out to his wife, family and the host of friends. You will truly be missed. God has the best of the best with him.
thanks for sharing your wit, humor, determination - an inspiring life.
See you at the Movies, Roger. Great work!
Rest in Peace, your reviews meant more to me growing up than most anything else.
What shocking and sad news. Condolences to Chaz and everyone around Roger. What a great man. Thank you for everything. RIP, sir.
I'm sorry for your loss. May prayers to God, who cares for you, be a source of comfort during this time.-1 Peter 5:7
Dear Chaz and family - I have always liked and admired Roger's work and spirit. He was well-respected and he will be missed all over the world. Chaz, you were his muse - the driving force that kept him alive and doing what he loved until the end. May God comfort you in your grief and hold Roger in the palm of His hand until you meet again. Here is a site that I found helpful when I faced widowhood: http://www.widownet.org/
To the family
I am sorry for your loss. May the God of comfort grant you peace in your time of grief. 2 Corinthians 1:3

I will miss your reviews, your wit, your insight, the phrases you coined, and your vast knowledge of/love for films. See you at the movies, Roger...
you gave it a good fight, now you can rest and be at peace. You will be missed by many.
What a tribute to him and his great mind that his words carried far more gravitas for me when he could no longer speak than when he was a dueling film critic with Gene. He was, without a doubt, one of the best creators of content on these here interwebs. And a great, soulful Chicagoan to boot. Thanks Roger....
Sorry to hear the news my thoughts go out to his wife in her greif. You were always a critic I could enjoy and relate to Roger and you will be missed. I hope you and Gene are already arguing away.
He was a beautiful, fluid, envy-inducing wordsmith, and a truly decent, kind man. He elevated criticism to the level of the art he critiqued.
I enjoyed reading Roger's movie reviews for his artful writing. I admired him professionally and personally, as he lived life to his fullest. May he rest in peace.
My deepest sympathies for the family's loss. Roger Ebert was a favorite of mine. I loved watching him review shows. He absolutely made his mark in this world and will be missed by many.
Your caption,"with the soul of a poet" is appropriate. Great critic, good guy, fellow Illini proud to be a classmate.
Thanks, Roger. You've been a true inspiration and will continue to be so for years to come. Many a wonderful movie experiences have been discovered from your reviews and I'm thankful there's yet more to be discovered from your years of dedication. I'm sure Gene and yourself will enjoy a big bag of popcorn while sitting in the balcony together looking down upon all of us.
I am writing a note of Condolence. My prays are with you. You are in my thoughts and prayers. "We will all miss Roger; he touched so many of our lives. God bless you.
I was lucky enough to attend Roger's Overlooked Film Festival in Champaign, IL. It is one of my favorite experiences ever.
Roger wasa film critic who never sugar coated a review of a turkey, or overlook a real gem. He will be missed by most of Hollywood, even those he panned. He really loved film.
