Caroline Despres Obituary

Caroline Despres WOODSTOCK: On Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2015, we lost a most loving and caring person, our wife, mother and best friend, Caroline Nichols Despres. She had the highest regard for life and the people in it. She endured several surgeries, over the past several years and was known for “keeping her pecker up”, (an old Vermont expression, originating in Britain), literally, “keeping your chin up”. She was born in Manchester, Vt., the daughter of the late William and Mary Batchelder Nichols and attended the Danby Public School, St. Joseph Acadamy and Rutland (Vt.) High School. Her parents operated a small- town grocery store in Danby in the 1920’s to 40’s. This allowed people to buy on credit and still provided home delivery. Caroline wanted to be a teacher, but she met the love of her life, a newly discharged U.S. Marine and was starting his career with IBM. This took them to assignments in Calif. and N.Y. in 13 years. Surviving are her husband, Richard Despres, four wonderful children, Jeanne Lightbody of Greenwich, Conn., Kathleen Baran of Woodstock, John of Saugerties and Richard Despres of Halton City, Texas, two brothers, William Nichols of Conn., and John Nichols of Vt. a sister, Ellen Machiniski of Nev., eight loving grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Friends will be received Friday 4 to 7 p.m., at Lasher Funeral Home, Inc., 100 Tinker St., Woodstock. Graveside services will be in the spring in Scottsville Cemetery, Danby, Vt.

Caroline will be greatly missed. When John looks at the picture Carrie painted of their parents home he thinks of all the good times they had from golfing to fishing to telling stories.
Caroline encouraged John to take a painting class with her caring loving nature. John and I will miss her.

Dick, Kathy, Jeanne, Rick, John, and families, you have our deepest condolences.

We miss you so much Grandma, though I'm thankful for all the times we did have together, and I'm glad for the time I was able to spend with you. So many good memories to reflect on, and I know you're up there looking upon us, smiling. We will all meet again someday, altogether as a family up above, as on Earth. Love you so much Grandma.

Caroline will be missed by all of us. Whenever I talked to her over the years she spoke so lovingly of her family and especially how she had great enjoyment spending time with her grandchildren. We are thankful for the visit we had with Caroline at the family reunion last summer. Our condolences to Dick and family.
