Danny,
You make your Dad proud. He and your Mom brought up a true gentleman. It was a pleasure to have worked with you in the PC Baskeball Office, and a real treat to have met your parents who, in spite of fame and status, always maintained humility and always kept focused on life's true treasures. I know your Dad's spirit will live on in you and Corey.
September 23, 2011
To the Gavitt Family,
My sincere sympathies to you all for your loss. Having dealt with a variety of high-profile personalities during my career over the years, I can say without hesitation that Dave was the most genuine, sincere, and down-to-earth guy I ever came across. Once he knew you were from PC, you always had an edge in the competition for his attention. I will miss that smile, wink and the nod he gave when I would see him on occasion. A true class act. We are all very privileged to have known him, and I hope you find pride and comfort in knowing how many people loved him and respected him. God Bless.

Julie, Dan, and Corey,
As the country mourns the loss of a Coach, a Mentor, a Businessman, we must remember that Dave was much more than that; Dave was a husband, a father, a grandfather, a brother, and a friend to many. Dave's true legacy will live on through his beautiful family! God Bless.
September 22, 2011
Dear Mrs. Gavitt - our deepest sympathies to you and your family. Your husband was a leader and an icon for RI and for the basketball world. My mother, Joan McMaster, was a good friend of yours. I wish you and your family much comfort.

September 22, 2011
My deepest condolences to the Gavitt family. I did not know Coach Gavitt personally, but he has been a large part of my " sport's life " at the very least. For a number of decades the Coach has been an inspirational leader and teacher of young people. He has demonstrated what hard work, enthusiasm and loyalty can produce. You have been wonderful neighbors to the City of East Providence and the world . His impact is far reaching and will live on forever.
September 22, 2011
Dave Gavitt embodied everything that was great, noble, and unique about Providence Basketball and the Big East. No one will ever be remembered more fondly.
September 22, 2011
Dear Julie and Family...I was a childhood friend in Peterborough, N.H. He helped me in shooting a good basket for our girl's team. We all were Basketball crazy, He started on Milts Tigers, before High School, and we knew right then that he would be great. All of his friends here are saddened, but glad to have had that time with him. Best wishes to your and your family....Jan Dolan; Peterborough,N.H.

Mrs. Gavitt and family, Thanks for sharing such a wonderful man with the sports world. I can't think of a more respected person. His efforts will never be forgotten.
September 22, 2011
May your hearts be filled with wonderful memories of the happy and joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived. Coach Gavitt will be greatly missed by the PC community and all those who knew him.
September 21, 2011
Coach Gavitt was a great man and though I did not know him very well, I want to thank him for his loyalty and dedication to PC and the entire basketball world!

Thank you Coach for three of my most favorite moments.

Thank you for the 1973 Final Four season! That was a fun ride to be on.

Thank you for the 1976 win over number 1 Michigan and of course when we played North Carolina during the Great Blizzard of '78. I along with 6 to 7,000 people walked to that game to see that famous 4 corner offense led by Phil Ford and yet we BEAT them.

But most of all Coach, thank you for putting a little Catholic school on the map. As much as you loved PC, the PC community loves you right back!

I can see Coach Gavitt along with Coach Mullaney and Coach Wooden diagraming x's and o's right now.

To Gavitt Family,

Dave was a very special man; humble, accomplished and the paragon of sophistication. Dave was equally comfortable in the company of a CEO or with the man working under the hood of his car. I am a former radio announcer for St. John's in the Big East which was under his stewardship,of course. As such, Coach Gavitt indirectly enhanced my career. I'm forever grateful. He will be greatly missed by many more than you can imagine.

As Pitt alumnus and former basketball manager at the school, I deeply admired Dave Gavitt for his vision and leadership. In fact, on my college entrance essay about three people I'd like to have dinner with, Mr. Gavitt was one of those three. Although I never got to have that dinner, I admire him and what he has accomplished, and thank him for providing me and my alma mater 30 years of fantastic memories. God bless the Gavitt family and be comforted by the knowledge that he touched the lives of many that he never even knew.
September 21, 2011
My heartfelt sympathy to a beautiful family who has lost their best friend. Dave exemplified what is truely good in life. He was a great man who served the basketball world with undying spirit and always had time to stop and say hello. Knowing him was a great privilege for me. Working with you, Julie, through my position at Providence College and, having you, Dan, as a friend during your years as a coach at PC, made me realize just what a great family you were.
May God bless all of you and help you through this sad time by remmbering all of your great times together with Dave.

Mrs. Gavitt and the boys,
My deepest sympathy for your loss. Mr. Gavitt - and I always called him Mr. Gavitt out of respect - even though he asked me to call him Dave was a man I learned from when I was a sports information student assistant at PC. I learned so much from just being around him. It's because of him and Mike, that I pursued a career in sports. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Julie--Both Joan and I are deeply saddened by David's passing. I remember when our brother-in-law, John Blish was hospitalized many times with his lingering illness. We didn't get back to Providence as often as we would have liked but every time that we visited John, David seemed to be there. That shows that he was a devoted, caring friend. From all that we have read recently, many others share that opinion. Our sympathies to you and your family.

To The Gavitt Family,

I am so sorry for the loss of such a GREAT man.
I was at PC from 1975 till 1979. And saw the coach daily. He was always so kind and respectful. I remember the double overtime Michigan game and beating NC during blizzard of 78 and his sons as water boys. And our PC trip to Hawaii for a tournament. I will always remember his smile, sense of humor and what a difference he made in our lives. I personally witnessed how he helped, coached and stressed academics and kindness to many of his players, Soup Campbell, Billy Eason, Joey Hassett, Bob Cooper and many others, learned so much about teamwork from THE COACH. So did I, just watching and listening.
An awful loss but will never be forgotten and continue guiding us from Heaven.

So Sad to see Daves name here.
As a loyal follower of Dave I wish to extend my sorrow to all of his loved ones and friends.
Theres no doubt that he was the best
coach ever.

As a member of the class of 64 at PC, we remember Dave well. But my wife and I also remember the opportunities to see and say hello to Dave and his family at the annual 4th of July ceremonies and children parades at Craigville Village. Mr Gavitt was one of the nicest people I ever met. To be as notable a person as he was with such amazing credentials and accomplishments, but still have time and care for everyone he meant is a testament to his greatness. Mrs Gavitt, Danny, Corey and the rest of your family, I hope it eases the pain to know how much Mr Gavitt meant to all of us.

My Big Brother at Beta, faked me out of my js many times when the Freshman scrimmaged the varsity , fellow hell raiser at Chatham , funniest one liners in the world, and made you feel like you were his best friend. Fellow Irishman forever ! Loved you Dave, we miss you .

Dear Julie, Dan and Corey,
I was so saddened to learn of Dave's
passing.
As former Admissions Dean at P.C. I was
blessed to work with David from 1972-'94. Our relationship was close and
founded in a special unity for shared
college goals. David's vision was that
PC be known for excellence in both
academics and athletics and he worked
diligently to that end.
With Dave's passing we have all lost
an incredible human being but we will cherish the precious memories that Dave
has given us forever.

God bless you all.

To the Gavitt Family,
He was a wonderful coach and taken too soon. Best to the family.
September 19, 2011
Dear Julie, Corey and Dan,

No words of mine can mean much now. Your loss is far too great and much too close. But for our Dominican Community at PC, our Office of Mission and Ministry, our alumni and alumnae, and in my own name, we do want to make known to you our deepest sympathy.

At a time such as this, nothing anyone says makes much sense. (Perhaps better than most I know that.) But it is my hope that the consoling thought of a Trappist monk might help.

Thomas Merton wrote, death is where the hills end and the stars begin. Dave's "hills" are over now. It's his time to be with the "stars" and their Source. May the deep, inner Peace that thought can induce, be with you and your family...especially now.
May Mary, the temple in whom God's Son became a priest, keep you near, in her care.

With His Love and all mine,
Fr. John Peterson, O.P.
Alumni/ae Chaplaincy

I met Dave Gavitt in 1965 when he was the assistant coach at Providence College. He offered me more than a scholarship to PC, Coach Gavitt offered me faith in myself. Whenever he spoke to me, his voice was always smart and caring. He always made you feel that he was speaking to you personally when advising you in coping with real life, and how to choose the life you wanted.
Dave Gavitt played a key role in teaching me to increase my efficiency and enhance my life quality. God loves Dave Gavitt and so do I.

Dear Julie, Corey and Dan:

On behalf of my family and myself, I want to extend our most sincere sympathy and condolences upon the passing of a wonderful Husband, Father and Friend.

Dave was truly a talented gentleman, who was greatly loved and admired by all who knew him for his many contributions to his church, community, country and society in general.

As a long-time associate at Providence College and friend since 1969, I personally witnessed many of his accomplishments, which are so well-known. In addition to his many, many achievements,he epitomized caring, loyalty, dedication and friendship and certainly was a sterling example for those with whom he came in contact.

Because of his exemplary life, he can be assured of a greatly-deserved place in God's kingdom for eternity. And he will always live on in the hearts, thoughts and prayers of all who were fortunate to know him.

God Bless Dave and all his Family.

Welcome Home
written by L J Coon

Welcome home my friend, from so much suffering
Welcome home my friend, step out of the pain
It’s ok to cry, we've all seen tears before
Its ok my friend welcome home

Talk of love one’s lost, so many years ago
And how you hurt inside, till no more tears would flow
Let the healing start, you can't look back no more
Its ok my friend welcome home

Welcome home, from so much suffering
Welcome home, step out of the pain
It’s ok to cry, we've all seen tears before
Its ok my friend, welcome home

Could I somehow sooth, your pain that lives within
If you just let go, the healing will begin
Holding on so tight, letting go is half the test
Its ok my friend welcome home

Welcome home, from so much suffering
Welcome home, step out of the pain
It’s ok to cry, we've all seen tears before
Its ok my friend, welcome home

It’s ok my friend…the pain won't hurt, no more ...
