My condolences to Professor Battelle's family and friends. I met Pete when I returned to UVM in pursuit of my degree as a nervous, self-conscious non-traditional (old) student in his accounting class. It was a 3-hour class on a late weeknight, and he was absolutely one of the BEST teachers I had at UVM. He encouraged me to try hard and believe in myself, and with this encouragement I managed to keep at it until graduating, with honors, this past May. Had you not encouraged me to keep at it back when it was all so intimidating, I don't think I would have. God Bless.

I was privileged to know Pete in the years when he and Jean were raising their four very smart and athletic children. In Friday pickup basketball with Pete and Sunday pickup soccer with all the Battelles I always appreciated what great and fair competitors he and they were; you really couldn't lose if they were on your team or the other one. In the many social occasions I shared with him he behaved in the same gentlemanly way. Whether he agreed or disagreed with some opinion of yours, he'd always hear you out and usually found some humor or reasons to be optimistic about the subject. You'd come away from conversations with him feeling pretty good about the world. He'd be a good guy to talk to right about now.

Jean and family - it is with sadness that I read Ben's email today about Pete's death. I'll remember Pete as a person who was always willing to help others and I'll remember his garden, the family gatherings and soccer games. If you have a special group that I can contribute to in Pete's honor, please let me know. My deepest condolences to such a beautiful family.
Norm sends his sympathies. Warmest regards, Gerri (Kochan, gerkochan@gmail.com

We remember college days at Middlebury and Delta Upsilon, our weddings, climbing Mt. Mansfield. Pete and Jean were always sharing adventures: hiking, cross-country skiing, walking, just plain enjoying their children and each other. We toured Alaska together in '97 where Pete caught an enormous rainbow trout on the Kenai River (photo has been attached). In recent years we have shared football and hockey games, Thanksgivings and Christmases. Pete continued to be the intrepid warrior staying right to the end of a great football game in below freezing conditions at Middlebury Homecoming in October. We will miss his wry wit, his warm smile, great sense of humor and his mental and physical toughness. We are fortunate that he has always been an important part of our lives.

My condolence to the family. Pete was a terrific guy.
