As high school sports editor of the Chicago Daily News and Chicago Sun-Times, I had the good fortune to cover some of Roger's basketball teams at Hersey High School, including the Dave Corzine-led 1974 team that reached the state quarterfinals. Later, I learned that Roger and I are Kappa Delta Rho fraternity brothers. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1958. I graduated in 1962. He was a wonderful coach and person, always stopping to say hello when our paths crossed, even after we both retired. He is missed but all those who knew him.

Great coach and teacher
March 18, 2014
I was high school friend of Scott's who went to Hersey High School.

Mr. Steingraber was a PE teacher, driver's ed instructor, and basketball coach. Mr. Steingraber was strict but always fair. If you had a problem he was always willing to talk.

Scott and Dale, I am sorry for your loss.

Roger first offered to help me as a first time member and spokesperson for the Dist. 214 Education Association negotiating team in the 1970's. His experience and understanding of school finance, health care cost, and of the collective bargaining history for the district was of great value to negotiating teams well into the 1980's. Roger was always a kind and thoughtful mentor to those involved with Education Association business. He was a gentle, but firm voice of reason to all of us who had the good fortune to pick his brain.
Don Tantillo,
Past President District 214 Education Association
