Anthony "Tony" Mario D'Aiuto enlisted in the US Navy on 9 December 1942 in New York, NY, and boarded the USS Independence (CVL-22) on 29 January 1944 at Hunters Point, CA while the extensive damage (from a torpedo, off Tarawa) was being repaired.
Tony served our nation aboard the Independence, seeing action aboard a fast carrier in the thick of the Pacific war as the USS Independence was to become our nation's first dedicated night aircraft carrier, eventually delivering the war to the shores of Japan .
An active and beloved member of the ship's reunion group, Anthony D'Aiuto's war diary (utilized in the book about the history of the ship) provides his personal insight back to a time in his life he reflected upon with great pride. Tony transferred off the Independence 16 February 1946 at Terminal Island, CA.
Goodbye Anthony, ... Thanks for your service, your kind smile, great conversation, and thank you for allowing us to remember what you and your fellow shipmates experienced through your diary entries!
John G. Lambert
