D-DAY Schintzel Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - Arthur Schintzel, of Williamsburg, VA, died on September 6, 2013 at the age of 91. Arthur was the beloved husband of Bette Mae Schintzel, devoted father of Katherine (Steven), Sarah, Arthur, Jr., and John (Jennifer), and proud grandfather of Sophia, Eric, Mark, and Scott. Funeral services will be held at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, VA, on Saturday, September 21, 2013, at 1pm, with visitation on Friday, September 20, 2013, from 2-4pm and from 6-8pm. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Military Order of the Purple Heart, PO Box 49 Annandale, VA 22003, the Disabled American Veterans, 3725 Alexandria Pike Cold Spring, KY 41076, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, 406 West 34th St. Kansas City, MI 64111, or to the charity of your choice. Born in 1922 in Orange, New Jersey, son of Charles Schintzel and Katherine Messman Schintzel, Art graduated from Orange High School in 1940. He fought bravely as an infantryman with the US Army 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, on Omaha Beach during the D-Day Invasion in Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944. Severely wounded in the battle, he was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Presidential Unit Citation, New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal, and American Campaign Medal, and European Theatre of Operations Medal, for his service and sacrifice. Later in life, he received additional awards and recognition for his D-Day service, including the D-Day Liberation of France Medal, Province of Normandy France Liberation Jubilee Medal, Victory Medal, the Distinguished Member of the Regiment (DMOR), 16th Infantry Regiment, and others. In February 2013, he was awarded the Chevalier de la Legion D'Honneur, French Legion of Honor, by the Government of France, for his contributions to the continuing freedom for the people of France. Following his military service and recuperation, Art graduated from Rutgers University in June 1950 with a degree in Business Administration, and attended further studies in law at George Washington University Law School. A Certified Public Accountant, he had a long and distinguished financial management career, serving with several large US and international firms, and in senior officer civilian positions with the US Government. After retiring, Art and Bette Mae moved to Williamsburg, where they became active members of their community and made many fast friends. They traveled the world, including a memorable trip to the beaches of Normandy for the 50th anniversary of the D-Day invasion. Art devoted many hours and much energy to the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion associations. He served as Senior Vice Commander and co-organizer of the Williamsburg Chapter 1754 MOPH, and Commander of the Newport News Chapter 607 MOPH. In that role he helped to plan and carry out the annual Veterans Day observances at the Victory Arch in downtown Newport News. He served as Chaplain, Patrick Henry Chapter 34, DAV. Through his association with the Association of the US Army, Society of the 1st Infantry Division (the Big Red One), the 16th Infantry Regiment Association, the 376th Infantry Regiment Association, and the USS Samuel Chase Association, he sought out fellow World War II veterans to memorialize the experiences and history of The Greatest Generation. His leadership, devotion, and patriotism were an inspiration to all who met him. Art lived his life with humor and grace. He brought richness to every friend and colleague, and greeted every day with a smile and kind words. We will miss him. Online condolences may be offered at www.nelsencares.com.
