Thoughts of A.J. and the Smith Family suddenly jumped into my head today. I found myself online and reading her obituary as well as that of her Father, David (L. Smith). After reading the comments from mostly Bowie High School "fans", I felt compelled to add memories of spending time at the Smith home, starting when the house was filled with 3 generations on a holiday, proceeding through the years to dinner with Elaine and Dave. I was "adopted" into the family through Elaine and David who had been my adult students at Brookhaven College (Continuing Education). I was about two years older than A.J., but my friendship was with her parents. Nonetheless, I have memories of enthusiastic moments including watching A.J. on the couch and Dave in his easy chair, each looking at back-to-back televisions, screaming, cheering and booing for their favorite sports team!! They also did this while on the telephone through a whole game!!

I did not find out that A.J. had died until a friend called to inform me. I was shocked that such a vibrant and enthusiastic person had died so young. I still do not know the cause.

Although I became entwined in caring for various relatives and friends as they approached death over a 14 year period, I feel/felt deep empathy for Elaine and her sister Joanie who lost Don and A.J. and David. I lost my "son", Anton, in 2011. That loss was the final blow. There is nothing like losing a child.

So, for the "Family", please accept my condolences and love.

AJ was a love. The last time I saw her was in April at the district UIL meet at Martin. I told her how great retirement was. She said, "I'll never retire. I'll teach until I drop." How prophetic! She lived for her students. She was true to Bowie. She was never judgmental; she was always smiling. AJ was a joy to know.

AJ: Viv and I miss you so much and now that catch up visit this summer will have to wait. Your support for the Drama kids was unflagging and your wisdom always solid. You could make blue jean teacher coveralls cool: not many folks can. All our love.
