John was one of our dearest friends. We were just two of many in the pantheon of people who loved John and called him friend. To us, he was family. He joined us for celebrations of Christmas, New Years', Easter, St. Patrick's Day, Independence Day, and Thanksgiving. If John wasn't sitting at the table during one of these celebrations, someone, a family member or close friend would always remark on John's absence. He was a treasured friend and neighbor. He was a tough businessman, a tough neighborhood advocate, a strident proponent of the State Thomas Neighborhood, a life-long friend and mentor too many. My family, our neighborhood and Dallas shine a little dimmer as a result of John's passing. It was John's most sincere wish his estate be used to create a philanthropic trust which would further the goals and success of a few small, underserved and under resourced schools serving underprivileged youth in Dallas. Through the Dallas Foundation, John was able to accomplish this goal. We miss John but are so grateful he was such an important part of our lives. We are privileged to have known him and we are very proud of the thoughtful, community-centered legacy he left which will serve the educational needs of underprivileged youth in Dallas in perpetuity.
