Daniel-O'Neil-Obituary

Daniel Patrick O'Neil

Obituary

Please sign the Guest Book for Daniel Patrick O'Neil, an environmental engineering student at Virginia Tech, also a resident of Lincoln, Rhode Island, who was a victim of the shootings on Monday, April 16, 2007, at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia.

O'Neil, 22, was a graduate student in engineering and played guitar and wrote his own songs, which he posted on a Web site, www.residenthippy.com.

Friend Steve Craveiro described him as smart, responsible and a hard worker, someone who never got into trouble.

"He would come home from school over the summer and talk about projects, about building bridges and stuff like that," Craveiro said. "He loved his family. He was pretty much destined to be extremely successful. He just didn't deserve to have happen what happened."

O'Neil graduated in 2002 from Lincoln High School in Rhode Island and graduated from Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., before heading to Virginia Tech, where he was also a teaching assistant, Craveiro said.

Not sure what to say?

My son Phillip was a friend of your son Daniel. My son told me about the barn in Lincoln where he would hang out with Daniel. It sounded so magical and youthful and I am
so thankful that he had the chance to know your son. I purchased several of Daniel's musical CDs and passed them out to friends and family members and they were all so touched by his gift of music words as was I. I have been listening to my CD and it has brought such joy. He was truly a visionary and beyond his...

I went to school at Lafayette with Dan, separated by a few years. One of my dearest friends wrote a letter today to commemorate your son's touch for reaching out, for communicating, for harnessing whatever zest there is to life and never growing tired of sharing it, making it bloom. I've read this collection of thoughts and prayers and cried many times. I remember him fondly; good souls always stick.
