To all of the beloved family and friends of Don “Monk” Meineke.

Don joined our family many years ago when he started dating Mary Jane and eventually were married in a ceremony I remember as if it were yesterday. Mary Jane and Grandma Hautman were living with us in that one bathroom house on Delmonte Avenue. It was hard not to get to know each other well.

Mary Jane was kind of like a big sister to Marilyn and me instead of an aunt so it made sense Don was kind of like a big brother to me in many ways.

I am sure he would frown on sadness at this time since it was not his nature so I will recall one of the many fond and memorable moments I have of him. Don was able to laugh at himself better than anyone I knew so it was no surprise when at family gatherings, when for whatever reason, Don could not get the pronunciation of a word correct, he would keep trying to get that one, multisyllabic word right all night. His comedic timing was impeccable. Realizing it was a source of entertainment for all around him – at his expense, Don would keep the theme going sometimes all evening, perhaps the entire year and in some instances, for decades and each time it was as if it was the first time I had ever heard it. If you are thinking that “I guess you had to be there” I understand. There are a million stories that can be told about this great guy but this happens to be one of many I won't forget.

Miss you, Uncle Don.

Johnny
