No matter how old we are, we still need our dads and worry how we'll get by without them. Although you'll sadly miss him, your dad's love lives on in these wise words, In the ways he shaped who you are, and in the memories of family times that will always be close to your heart. Belatedly So sorry for your loss.

I supported and worked on Jack's campaigns for years, and always had the utmost respect for him. May God bless him and take him directly to heaven because of a life lived helping others.

Thank you, Jack, for giving us so much of yourself. I identify you in all the ways and words mentioned in this obituary. Most of all, I identify you as Educator. When I wrote my regrets to you questioning in strong words, "Why/how could Ohio voters reject your re-election as Governor?" you CAUTIONED me not to fulmilate" against the voters of Ohio. A good example of your gentle humanity and teaching, all the way to the last sentence in your obituary.

I was Jack Gilligan's assistant while serving as a scholar of law, government and human rights at Notre Dame. I will forever cherish the hours I spent in his company learning from the vault of his wisdom in ways that guide me today. God bless you, Governor.

A great governor and Democrat. One of the best. He did so much for Ohio. My sincere condolences to his family.

As a small girl I remember my grandmother, Ann (Jack) Thompson speaking of the Gilligan family. My parents had me handing out leaflets door to door for Jack Gilligan and going to rallies. One memorable rally was at the Cincinnati Zoo with Robert Kennedy who came in to campaign for him. He set the political bar very high with his integrity, vision, and pragmatism, and few have met that bar since. Decades later I found myself serving on parish council with him at St. Anthony Church in Madisonville. I was awestruck and he was the same. I send my condolences to the family at their loss.

My deepest sympathies to the family of a true leader and excellent public servant. I served on the Governor's Cuyahoga re-election staff in 1974 and his example of standing for principles rather than bending to political expediency has always stayed with me.
He impacted the lives of thousands of Ohioans including many who are unable to defend for themselves. His legacy endures.

Thomas J. George, former Mayor City of Lakewood

John Gilligan was a strong and necessary leader. I was involved with the Democratic Party of Preble County at the time he ran for Governor of Ohio and still have a Gilligan for Governor button in my collection. It was a difficult time for Ohio and he did what was necessary. To his family and friends, I send my deepest sympathies for their loss!
