When I was a little girl, we visited family in Danville, Virginia. They took us to a huge barn dance, it was on live radio. When we walked in the door, Earl Scruggs said, "Here is someone from home! Welcome Herbert Foster!" And the audience did, it was a llittle embarrasing. As we were watching the dancing, our Mother got gone, we were concerned until we saw her across the dance floor, dancing too. She always enjoyed dancing, so it was fun. I now love and appreciate blue grass music. Had several friends who showed me the talent in it, "Daddy Bob" (Bob Overby, related to Earl Monroe) and Earl Miller (Carolina Ramblers). Peace to family members and friends of an icon in music.
April 17, 2012
may the God of peace reside with the families and friends.

The use of the word "Icon" has been worked to death in the media, and assigned to people who do not or did not deserve it. Earl Scruggs was a true ICON, in the clearest meaning of the word. He was the first, and probably the last on the 5 string banjo. He is in Heaven, but he will be missed by me and my family. From all appearances, he was a humble caring man, who was the BEST at his craft.

Dear Family, you have my deepest heartfelt condolences. May God be with you to bring you comfort and peace through this difficult time. He promises us at Isaiah 61:2, 25:8 "he will actually do away with death forever...will certainly wipe the tears from all faces."
March 31, 2012
Thank you Mr.Scruggs, listening to the Beverly Hillbilly's theme song as a young child introduced me to Bluegrass music, which I fell in love with and have enjoyed immensely ever since. I look forward to hearing you play once again in the heavenly music hall.
March 31, 2012
Mr. Scruggs will always be known as a national treasure, who's passing will leave a great void in the world of musicians and fans alike. His innovative style has forever changed the perception of the Banjo as merely a Bluegrass instrument. He was a pioneer who will be missed. I cannot imagine there will be anyone to fill his shoes any time soon.
March 31, 2012
One of the great musicians of the 20th century and his legend will endure from now on, praying for the family.
March 31, 2012
To Earl's family his music has always been a favorite my sincere sympathy in your loss. May the peace of God that excels all thought be with you he will be missed.
March 31, 2012
A artist of many talents, but yes the banjo was his heart and soul, I can hear the angels singing in Heaven whil you play your banjo. I was born country and you can't be country with out that bluegrass raising. Thank you for your contribution to my life, and all the enjoyment you gave me. You're picking high on the Angels Wings.

Dorothy Watson, Prospect Hill, NC
March 31, 2012
As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.
March 31, 2012
I used to listen to Earl when I was a kid in the 50's and 60's on the radio and just couldn't imagine how one man could get that much music out of one insturment. I've been picking since then and am still puzzled..I feel like I've lost a family member. RIP Mr. Earl.
March 31, 2012
Yep, Ol' Earl is up there plinking on a harp now, giving it a totally new sound and the Angels are dancing around, getting worn down. Keep it up Earl, only you can do it!!
SO SILENT WAS YOUR LEAVING
by Robert M. H. Zirbel
So silent was your leaving, Not a sound to say goodbye,
Just a silence that you left behind
And that silence seemed to say
“Please, please…Do not grieve…
For I just had to go.”

So silent was your leaving,
Uttering not a painful cry
Nor even a fearful moan.
And that silence seemed to say
“Please, please…
Do not grieve…
For I just had to go.”

That silence is still not shattered
Even though my tears pour down
To join with all the unsaid words…
Those special, special words…
That I had always meant to say.

If I had cried out “Please, please do not go.”
Would you have stayed?
No, I think not
For you had been called…
And you knew you had to go.
Yes, you knew you had to go.
March 30, 2012
Bluegrass you made it your banjo playing just lovely to listen too... may you rest in peace...
March 30, 2012

March 30, 2012
REST IN PEACE Mr. Scruggs, my prayer goes out to your family, you will be missed, I was very young when I first met you and Lester out in Pa.back in the 60s.
March 30, 2012
Bobby Fischer lived one year for every square on a chess board, sixty-four (64) as did Earl Scruggs, one year for every fret. Eighty-Eight (88) frets on my banjo. The high G which is a drone was added later somehow inspired by God to that special person who first added it, well, let's leave that alone...I bought Earl's first banjo book in Hollywood, CA. in 1974 after seeing him perform at UCLA with the Revue. When he played Sally Goodin', I was 'ALL IN', he broke a string during one song and pulled a string from somewhere and wrapped it up in oh, 20 seconds, the music never lost a beat...simply amazing! always been able to pick out his style of attack on a banjo roll whenever a bluegrass song on the radio was intro'd with the banjo.. yep! that's Earl Scruggs, I'm sure of it! The best he showed me was how to use my thumb in 3 finger picking..Thank -You Mr. Scruggs for giving me your talent thru your music and your banjo book. Your life was a blessing to many people. Your name was added to that "Great List" when you wrote Foggy Mt. Breakdown you just didn't know it at the time...

Ronnie and I loved your dad and his music. What a joy he was. Ronnie met your dad and mom 25 years ago as he was building his banjo. Your dad helped him to much, we will never forget Mr. Earl. We attended Eart's 80th Birthday Party at Merlfest, it was just wonderful, a true blessing to get to meet your dad and listen to his music in person. Ronnie still plays "Earl Scruggs Style" and loves to play every time he can, your dad was and will always be his hero. We do not listen to anyone else. We truly miss him, He was a true GENTLEMAN. My Dad (who was born in 1893)and all of his siblings were musicians (not professionals); my dad could play & tune anything that had strings and I can remember the first time I ever heard Earl Scrggs on the radio (we had recent been given a radio which ran on the tractor battery!) My dad said "Listen to that kids; first time I ever heard anyone on the radio who picked the banjo w/all his fingers like Ludie & I do". Ludie was my dad's younger sister and she also played the 5 string with what some later called the 'claw-hammer' style.
My dad was the first person I ever heard play a banjo and I thought that was the way everyone played. I later dated a guy for a short time who played banjo with Wilma Lee & Stoney Cooper, but he did not play it like my dad had.
My two youngest brothers were on the Jr Grand old Opry in the mid 1950s; but they never played professionally either. We just loved music and we ALL Loved Earl Scruggs' music.
I met Mr Scruggs & his wife a few years before Mrs Scruggs died, while doing waitress work. They were very sweet/kind people and I cared a great deal for them.
Am so sad to learn of Mr Scruggs' death. I send my deepest sympathies to his family; especially the sons who played with him. I know they will miss him dearly, as will his fans. I have his family in my prayers.

I join w/ Vince Gill in saying; 'Go Rest High on that Mountain' You have earned it, Mr Scruggs!!

Earl Is In A Much Better World Today Than This One.

There, He Is Free From All The Pain, Suffering And The Agony He Alone Quietly Endured While Here.

Upon His Arrival, There Will Be A Grand Celebration Held In His Honor, By All Who Have Preceded Him.

We Should All Pray, For The Repose Of His Immortal Soul.

May God Bless His Family, And God Bless Earl Scruggs.

What a loss! And, yet, what a great blessing and treasure. I was never the same after I learned "Scruggs Picking" on my banjo. He handed me a lifetime of fun. But mostly, he gave me a lifetime of joy to experience while listening to all the amazing, wonderful, and downright stunning sounds he produced with his banjo.

How fortunate we are!
March 30, 2012
I grew up listening to Earl Scruggs' bluegrass music with my daddy. We saw him in person, and from that moment on, I knew he was the best banjo picker there was. Earl mastered the banjo.

One request, Earl: Pick your banjo in heaven and play a good song for my daddy!
March 29, 2012

BLUEGRASS MUSIC HAVE LOST A GREAT MAN, MY GOD BLESS ALL OF HIS FAMILY. THE ROWELLS FROM LORIS SC,
March 29, 2012
I still have the original National fingerpicks and thumbpick that Earl gave me when my brother and I were backstage at the San Antonio Municipal Auditorium in 1946! We watched Earl place a 60 watt bulb iside his Gibson Mastertone banjo to heat the "Rogers" calfskin head because of the rain had really been coming down! I was 11 yrs.old and my brother was 16.......we had heard over the radio stations "all you people need to come tonight to see this "magical banjo player named Scruggs," who plays with the Bluegrass Boys!" This was broadcast from Georgia Young's Record Shop in San Antonio!!
He stepped up to that microphone that night on his break of "Bluegrass Breakdown," and encored 3 times! The audience was flabbergasted!!
He was and will always be my "All Time Bluegrass Hero," not only because of his talent.... but also because he was such a fine man 66 years ago at the tender age of 22 and remained that way throughout his life!
God bless his family.. and keep them in your prayers! I know he is "jamming" up in Heaven today!!
Tom Uhr and The Shady Grove Ramblers of Irving, Texas
March 29, 2012
A great legend is mourned, my thoughts and prayers to the Scruggs Family. "The original Bluegrass Band" is together again, (Earl, Lester Flatt, Bill Monroe, Chubby Wise and Cedric Rainwater) what beautiful sound they must be making in the heavenly choir.
March 29, 2012
Earl - Always love seeing you and Lester on the Beverly Hillbilles. You had a long and glorius career. May God have you strumming your getaur in heaven.
March 29, 2012
"Bluegrass Breakdown," people just gasped! He was young and really had things together! Georgia Young's Record Shop in San Antonio played Bill Monroe's records all day long....which really aroused how Earl was picking!!
He was and will always be my Bluegrass hero!!
God bless his family....... and I know he is "jammin'" up in heaven as I write this!!

March 29, 2012
He is gone from this world, but he now graces the City on High with his talent, his wit, his down-home honesty, and his easy smile. Earl, I never met you, but I can call up in my mind the opening bars of so many of your songs with such a reality that I actually break out in goosebumps just imagining the sound! God gave you a gift, and you gave it back to all of us in so many ways. Gary, Randy, and all of the family, thank you so much for sharing Earl with the rest of the world...we are all truly better for having had the pleasure of "knowing" him through his music. May God grant him eternal peace and may He grant you solace in your hour of bereavement.

March 29, 2012
Randy and Gary, you will always be Stevie's big brothers to me. My heart is with you all in the loss of your Daddy now. He was one of the kindest people to us, your little neighbor twins, two doors down, back on Donna Drive. I remember going with him to the Opry back at the Ryman and waiting backstage with Stevie when we were really little kids. He took turns bringing us along and was such a kind man. We know that he showed you all how to be the gentlemen that you are...and yes, wonderfully talented, each and every one.

It has been such a comfort to hear his voice and music so often over the years, but it's been deeply moving to listen to them all again today and remember you all fondly. Gary, we listen regularly to your singing the Daddy Played the Banjo song with Steve Martin. It's a sweet reminder of your Daddy to me, even though it's written by Mr. Martin. I enjoy it.

Love and light to you boys and to all the rest of your loved ones. May you find peace and hope.
March 29, 2012
I'm so sorry for your loss. I can still sing all the words to The Ballad of Jed Clampett. I love Earl's music and will always say that my love of listening to the banjo is because of him.
March 29, 2012
Heartfelt, true and wonderful music flowed from Mr. Earl Scruggs. A native of North Carolina soil, and a man for all of America to be proud of to call our own, he was beloved by the whole world, and rightfully so. His honest expression of American music is the standard by which so many others try to measure their own talents. May this country gentleman rest in peace. Amen.

The hills weep........,R.I.P.Mr. Scruggs
March 29, 2012
RIP my dear friend. You gave us a lot of family enjoyment!! Condolences to your friends and family.
March 29, 2012
Rest in peace Mr. Scruggs. Love country music. And you were a big part of that.
March 29, 2012
"FOGGY MOUNTAIN BREAKDOWN" is the best Bluegrass banjo composition I have heard. Now that I know it was first recorded in 1949, I will try to find the 78 rpm of it.
I was way too young to appreciate the music of those "Hooterville" shows at their debut. Yet I do love the theme songs. Too bad MTV won't play this.
I wish I could see more on CMT. It would be an improvement for BET to play some, too.

Rest in Peace.
This music fan like lots of different styles of music. I do not segregate styles. I INTERGRATE all music genres, just not a fan of way-too-loud items.

We lost a music legend, and Heaven gained the best banjo player in the world. God be with your family and friends as they grieve. Earl has them tapping their toes in Heaven as he plays a golden banjo. May we be blessed by the faint sound of his banjo, when a gentle breeze stirs us. I know the house is packed in the Grand Ole Opry in Heaven.

Goodbye Earl.

Debbie Harris {Jackson, Tn}

Oh shoot...I don't mean Goodbye Earl like in the Dixie Chicks song. FYI

My deepest sympathy to the Scruggs family. My first exposure to Bluegrass music was in 1961 when I bought the album "Foggy Mountain Banjo". You did not hear that kind of music on Texas radio stations very much back then. I fell in love with the 5 string sound and bought a Gibson. In 1963 Flatt & Scruggs came to San Antonio with the Johnny Cash Show. Earl was very gracious when I knocked on the stage door asking to meet him. He took me out to their bus and showed me his banjo, taught me how to tune mine and sold me a set of his Vega strings. I'll never forget his kindness. He was the BEST. Rest in peace dear friend.
March 29, 2012
I can not believe that this great performer is gone.I started listening to him in the 60's.My prayers go out to all of his family members. I absolutely love the sound of his music and always will. Rest in peace Earl

To Randy, Gary and families, you have lost a loved one but the world has lost a music icon. As a child of WWII, my family and I grew up with the likes of Flatt & Scruggs and that great banjo and guitar music played "Scruggs" style. Now as a bluegrass DeeJay, I get lots of request for "Foggy Mountain Breakdown", "Earl's Breakdown" and "Shuckin' the Corn". From another North Carolina native, I am proud to share your State and music.
The banjo is my favorite instrument, thanks to Earl Scruggs. You will be truly missed. RIP

Randy and Gary, so sad to hear of your dad's passing. Remarkable seems like such as small word to describe his life. He changed the world of music and specifically bluegrass; but perhaps his greatest accomplishment was the legacy he leaves through you two. Even back in high school, I remember the admiration you both had for your dad, and he lives on through your talents. My prayers are with you this day; wishing you many great memories in the days ahead.

My deepest sympathy goes to Randy, Gary and families. I am so sorry for your loss. I was a huge fan of your father. Your father brought great joy and listening pleasure to everyone. Earl Scruggs was and always will be the best ever on the 5-string banjo and he was tremendous on the guitar as well. He was also part of one of the greatest bands of all time of any music genre when Bill Monroe, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs were together in the 1940's. I even bought a 1947 songbook from E-bay years ago when they were playing together as one band. Earl Scruggs will be dearly missed by many including me. Thank you.
March 29, 2012
Thanks for everything, Earl.
March 29, 2012

Thank you for using your God-given gifts to provide your fans with music that has moved us so much, making a lasting impression on our hearts.

My family in the early sixties lived by a gentleman who later became Porter Wagner's fiddle player. At the time Mack was with Reno and Smiley. We grew up listening to you as well as other Bluegrass musicians in Virginia. I must say the world is slowly losing our beloved ambassadors of Bluegrass. May God be with your family during this difficult time but we need to remember all the wonderful memories!!

March 28, 2012
It goes beyond description to speak of Mr. Scruggs' talent and what he brought to those of us who love and appreciate his tremendous musical gifts. Never did we hear any risque' comments, off-color or political incorrect jokes; only real music and clean lyrics. How many entertainers can say that today? Thank you for giving us programs of wholesome entertainment. I was fortunate to hear Mr. Scruggs close up and personal in a small high school concert in Alabama in 1970 as a college coed on a date with my future husband, which was even better than hearing him at the Ryman Theater years later. May heaven's angels welcome you with open arms, Mr. Scruggs and escort you to the throne room of our Heavenly Father to play your banjo in eternity. Know that you will NEVER be forgotten because of your wonderful recordings left for all of us to cherish. There will never be your kind of musical talent again who represented blue grass and country music with such dignity and sensitivity. Thank you so much for bringing so much joy to so many. I would also like to express my sincere sympathy to the Scruggs family and thank them for sharing and supporting their father 's desire to entertain.

My Great Uncle, Hayes Hall, sold Earl Scruggs his famous Gibson Mastertone back in the ol' days. Earl was just a young man.He showed up one day to inquire if it was something Hayes might sell to him. When he asked how much would Hayes sell it for Hayes just rolled off a low number but was still a lot for a young man.
He thought the young Mr. Scruggs did not have that kind of money on him.As Mr. Scruggs pulled out the money Hayes wife said...
"You ain't gonna sell your banjo for that amount are you? She knew Hayes had more in it than he asked and it was worth even more now.
Hayes told his wife..."A man's word is his honor!" He let Earl Scruggs leave with it for the low price.Mountain folk live by a different creed than most.He told me "That boy could play that banjo! He musta won a lot of prize money doing it!"
Funny how later in life Hayes ended up buying him a Vega Earl Scruggs model banjo.
Ol' Hayes was a masterful banjo picker himself but he just took the blue ribbons locally up around Bassett VA and around the Mt. Airy NC areas.
I've seen and heard them both play and that was as good as it gets to me.
Hayes played me a lot of banjo tunes and I thought he was really good but did not recognize any of them as I was not familiar with them to his astonishment. When he played Foggy Mountain Breakdown and The Ballad of Jed Clampett, I lit up, and he just shook his head and told me...

"All you younger guys know is Earl's stuff! They don't think I can play this banjo unless I can do his tunes!"
I told him he sure could make that banjo talk and he was perplexed at it took Earl's tunes for me to say that!
Well even to this day I still favor Earl's tunes over all the tunes ever written.
He was the best of them all.
Ain't nobody ever gonna top him.
